MINER'S LAMP.

The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and part of the sanie.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, W. G. DOWD, of Scranton, in the county of Luzerne, and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Lamps for Mining and other purposes; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof,which will enable those skilled in the art t0 make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.

This invention relates to lamps which are used by miners more particularly, but which are adapted to other purposes, and which are usually attached to the cap of the miner, so that his hands may be left free for pursuing his labor.

Common lamp-oil is usually consumed in these lamps, and, whatever kind of iuid is used, it is frequently necessary to raise the lamp-wick.

The ordinary method of raising the wick in common lamps is not admissible in this lamp, owing to the peculiar use to kwhich itis applied.

Being attached to the cap of the miner, it is, of course, subject to all tbe motions of the head, in the use of the pick, and in performing other operations, so that the oil or fluid in the lamp is in a constant state of agitation, and no oriices could be allowed without a constant loss and dripping of the oil. It is, therefore, necessary that any device for raising the Wick should be inserted at the end of the tube, and made to operate without puncturing the tube. For this purpose, I attach a fork, or one or more points or hooks, to a bent or double wire, as I will proceed to describe.

Figure 1 represents a vertical section of a minerls lamp, with my improvement attached.

A represents the lamp.

B is the wick-tube, which is attached to the body of the lamp like an ordinary spout.

C is `a bent, or doubled wire, which is confined to the outside of the tube, by'a clasp, which forms a channel, c, in which the outside portion, @Lof the wire C, slides.

The inside part of tliewire, f, passes d own into the tube, with an eyeforined ou its end, to which is attached, by a loose joint, the fork, or pointed hooks g.

h represents a small plate, or shield, which is attached to the eye of the wire f, for the purpose of allowing the wire and point, or points to descend without disturbing the wick.

The lower end of the outside wire, d, is bent outward, as seen at i, to al'ord a hold for the iingers in sliding the wire.

The lamp-wick is seen in red color in the drawing.

I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The wire G, bent over the outer edge of the wicktube` B, with its outer portion sliding in the guide, and its inner portion bent to form an eye, c, to which are hung the fork g and plate h, all constructed as described, for the purpose specified.
