ARTHUR A. ENSMING-ER, OF CLEVELAND, OHIO.
BLADE HOLDER AND SHARPENER.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ARTHUR A. ENS- Mrxenn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Blade Holders and Sharpeners, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my present invention is to provide a tool by means of which the blades of scrapers (such as are used in scraping wood work in finishing) may be quickly, accurately and efiiciently sharpened.
It consists in a clamp or vise within which the scraper blade is secured and having a series of guiding points at which to rest the sharpening tool, and a suitable sharpening tool adapted to rest or be engaged at such points and be moved over the edge of the blade to be sharpened, the said sharpening tool being shiftable (at the will of theoperator) to produce the exact character of sharpening desired.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, which are made a part hereof, and on which similar reference characters indicate similar parts, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a tool embodying my invention as it appears in position for use, and Fig. 2 a sectional view of the same.
The vise-like portion of my improved tool consists of a base 21 having a standard 22 which develops into a blade-rest 23 at the top, above which is a clamping bar 24 provided with screws 25 by which it is held to the blade rest and clamps the blade to be sharpened in place as shown. A curved arm 26 containing a series of sockets or perforations 27 extends up from the base 21, said curve in the form shown being struck on substantially a radial line from the position occupied by the edge of the scraper blade to be sharpened. The sharpening is done by means of a tool 31 the point of which is adapted to enter the sockets of perforations 27, and be then pressed against the edge of the scraper blade to be sharpened, by hand, with suitable force, according to the judgment of the operator. thus formed may be curved over as much as desired, by first positioning the tool 31 in an approximately horizontal position, so that the point of the sharpening tool will engage the upper perforation in the arm 26, as shown by full lines in Fig. 2 of the drawing, and then dropping the end which engages with said perforations successively into lower ones thereof until it reaches the posit-ion indicated by dotted lines. Tool 31 is preferably provided with a suitable handle 32 by which it may be conveniently grasped by the hand of the operator.
As will be readily understood, by the use of my improved sharpening apparatus, scrapers may be prepared for use with great accuracy and much more speedily than by common methods. The scraper blade may also be held in the vise portion of this apparatus to be filed, whenever it is desired, on account of the condition of the scraper blade, to file away some portion of the metal.
Having thus fully described my said invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is,
1. A tool for sharpening blades consisting of a clamp for holding the blade to be sharpened, a guiding arm containing a series of perforations, and a tool adapted to engage at one end with said perforations and to be operated against the edge of the blade to be sharpened.
2. The combination, in a tool for sharpen-
