Description
Ctnitrd tant HAMILTON PRAY, OF SHARON, CONNECTICUT.
Letters Patent N o-. 97 ,441, dated November 30, 1869.
IMPRf-)VEMBNT N OPERATING GRINDSTONES.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom it may conce/rn Bc it known that' I, HAMILTONIRAY, of Sharon, in the county of Litchfield, and State of Connecticut,
have invented a new and useful Improvement in Oper ating Grindstones; and I do hereby declare that the following is afull, clear', and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the artto make and use the saine, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, -ibrming part of this specitication.
This invention relates toa new and improved mode of' operating revolving grindstones, whereby one person is enabled to turn or revolve the stoneand to hold the article to be ground; and
It consists in operatingor revolving the st one by means of pedals (or treadles) attached to cranks on the.grindstone-shaft, arranged in the manner hereinafter described.
porte-d. '1"
Thisbench rests `on timbers G C, which extend forward, so that one end of' the pedals may bfi-supported therefrom.
D -D represent the pedals. l These pedals are hinged to the fbrward part of the grindstone be placed in a permanent position, the
pedals may be attached to the licor, or to any other convenient tixture.
'Each end of the grindstone-shait is provided with a crank, as seen in iig. 3, or with crank-wheels G G, as seen in the other iignres.
F F represent connecting-rods from the back endsof the pedals to the cranks, as seen in thedrawing.
The pedals are guided, so that they have no lateral movement, by means `of the'tixed vertical rods H H,
which pass through mortises in the pedals. In revolving-.the stone, the operator stands upon these pedals (one foot on each) and bears with his weight alternately on the pedals, thereby revolving the stone by means ofthe cranks-and connecting-rods Iy represents a rest, which is attached to the bench B, to steady` the tool when being ground.
J is the grindstone-shaft.
By this arrangement, a person is enabled toiturn the stone wthlis feet, (and weight,) while his hands are left-at liberty tohold the tool, or other article,
4which he wishes to grind.
The advantages ot thisarrnngement are many, and must-be obvious to all.
Having thus described my invention,
I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters ,Patentn A grinding-apparatus, composed of 'grindstone A,
'bench-timbers B C, hinged pedals D, crank-disksG,
connecting-rod F, rest I, and shaft J, all constructed and arranged with respect to one another, in thc man- 4ner described.
'Witnesses HAMILTON PRAY.
