Letters Patent No. 98,405, dated December 28, 1869.
- LAMP-ExTING-UISHER.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SETH W. PERKINS, of Geneseo, in the county of Henry, and State of Illinois, have in- 4 vented a new and improved LarnpExt-inguisher and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a part ofthis specification, in which Figure l is a plan view of my extinguisher, applied to, and the jaws closed upon the top of a lamp-tube,
jaws open.
This invention consists of a case, capable of being slipped on over any ordinary lamp-tube, and bearing two jaws, each provided with a-weight, and having a tendency to fold together upon the wick, so as to com-' pletel y cover it when turned down, and thus extinguish the flame, said jaws being readily separable by the wick, as it is turned. up by the ratchet-wheel to be lighted.
y In the drawings- A is the lamp-tube, and
B, the extinguisher-case, slipped on the upper end of the former.
The tube has an ear, projecting upward from each end, in which ears are pivoted the jawsa afextending lengthwise between the ears, one at each side of the tube.
Each of the jaws has an arm, b, projectingfrom one end, the two arms being at opposite ends of the tube, and each arm being bent around parallel with the tube, and having at its end a weight, b.
The arms b project from the upper corners of the jaws, while the latter are pivoted at their lower oorners'; hence, the tendency of the weight is to keep the jaws constantly closed, and when the wick is turned down, the jaws, by their-own weight, follow and close upon it, extinguishing the flame completely, and cutting off the smoke. v
.011 turning the wick up, it opens the jaws, which then press slightly against itsssides, in readiness to close over it again as soon as it is lowered.
The friction of the wick against the jaws, and the action of the jaws upon the wick, are such as to also trim the latter so well that it does not require regular cutting oftener than once in two or three weeks.
The case may be made of a size to fit any tube.
Having thus described my invention,
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters r' 7 j The case 13, combined with the pivoted jaws Ir, arms 12, and weights b", in the manner and for-the purpose set forth.
SETH W. PERKINS.
