Abstract

A new and distinct cultivar of Achillea plant named ‘ACBZ0002’, characterized by its upright and uniform plant habit; moderately vigorous growth habit; freely branching habit; freely flowering habit with plants remaining in flower for a long period time; inflorescences with bright yellow-colored ray florets; and good garden performance.

Description

Botanical designation: Achillea millefolium.
Cultivar denomination: ‘ACBZ0002’.
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
The present invention relates to a new and distinct cultivar of Achillea plant, botanically known as Achillea millefolium, and hereinafter referred to by the name ‘ACBZ0002’.
The new Achillea plant is a product of a planned breeding program conducted by the Inventor in Enkhuizen, The Netherlands. The objective of the breeding program is to create new early-flowering Achillea plants with uniform plant habit and large inflorescences with bright yellow-colored ray florets.
The new Achillea plant originated from a cross-pollination made by the Inventor in Enkhuizen, The Netherlands in July, 2007 of a proprietary selection of Achillea millefolium identified as code number H4981-13, not patented, as the female, or seed, parent with Achillea millefolium ‘Moonshine’, not patented, as the male, or pollen, parent. The new Achillea plant was discovered and selected by the Inventor as a single flowering plant from within the progeny of the stated cross-pollination in a controlled greenhouse environment in Enkhuizen, The Netherlands in July, 2008.
Asexual reproduction of the new Achillea plant by vegetative tip cuttings in a controlled environment in Enkhuizen, The Netherlands since August, 2008, has shown that the unique features of this new Achillea plant are stable and reproduced true to type in successive generations.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION
Plants of the new Achillea have not been observed under all possible combinations of environmental conditions and cultural practices. The phenotype may vary somewhat with variations in environmental conditions such as temperature and light intensity, without, however, any variance in genotype.
The following traits have been repeatedly observed and are determined to be the unique characteristics of ‘ACBZ0002’. These characteristics in combination distinguish ‘ACBZ0002’ as a new and distinct Achillea plant:
    • 1. Upright and uniform plant habit.
    • 2. Moderately vigorous growth habit.
    • 3. Freely branching habit.
    • 4. Freely flowering habit with plants remaining in flower for a long period time.
    • 5. Inflorescences with bright yellow-colored ray florets.
    • 6. Good garden performance.
Plants of the new Achillea differ from plants of the female parent selection in the following characteristics:
    • 1. Plants of the new Achillea are taller than plants of the female parent selection.
    • 2. Plants of the new Achillea are not as freely branching as plants of the female parent selection.
    • 3. Inflorescences of plants of the new Achillea are longer lasting than inflorescences of plants of the female parent selection.
Plants of the new Achillea differ from plants of the male parent, ‘Moonshine’, in the following characteristics:
    • 1. Plants of the new Achillea are more compact than and not as vigorous as plants of ‘Moonshine’.
    • 2. Plants of the new Achillea are more freely branching than plants of ‘Moonshine’.
    • 3. Plants of the new Achillea flower earlier than plants of ‘Moonshine’.
    • 4. Plants of the new Achillea have larger inflorescences than plants of ‘Moonshine’.
Plants of the new Achillea can be compared to plants of Achillea tomentosa×Achillea millefolium ‘Desyel’, disclosed in U.S. Plant Pat. No. 22,369. In side-by-side comparisons conducted in Enkhuizen, The Netherlands, plants of the new Achillea differed from plants of ‘Desyel’ in the following characteristics:
    • 1. Plants of the new Achillea were taller than plants of ‘Desyel’.
    • 2. Plants of the new Achillea were not as freely branching as plants of ‘Desyel’.
    • 3. Inflorescences of plants of the new Achillea were longer lasting than inflorescences of plants of ‘Desyel’.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE PHOTOGRAPHS
The accompanying photographs illustrate the overall appearance of the new Achillea plant showing the colors as true as it is reasonably possible to obtain in colored reproductions of this type. Colors in the photographs may differ slightly from the color values cited in the detailed botanical description which accurately describe the colors of the new Achillea plant.
The photograph on the first sheet is a side perspective view of a typical flowering plant of ‘ACBZ0002’ grown in a container.
The photograph on the second sheet is a close-up view of a typical flowering plant of ‘ACBZ0002’.
DETAILED BOTANICAL DESCRIPTION
Plants used for the aforementioned photographs and following observations and measurements describe plants grown during the late spring and summer in 13-cm containers in an outdoor nursery in Enkhuizen, The Netherlands and under cultural practices typical of commercial Achillea production. During the production of the plants, day temperatures ranged from 15° C. to 25° C. and night temperatures ranged from 5° C. to 15° C. Plants were 14 weeks old when the photographs and description were taken. In the following description, color references are made to The Royal Horticultural Society Colour Chart, 2007 Edition, except where general terms of ordinary dictionary significance are used.

      • Type.—Terminal vegetative cuttings.
      • Time to initiate roots, summer.—About seven days at temperatures about 24° C.
      • Time to initiate roots, winter.—About nine days at temperatures about 20° C.
      • Time to produce a rooted cutting, summer.—About 18 days at temperatures about 24° C.
      • Time to produce a rooted cutting, winter.—About 21 days at temperatures about 20° C.
      • Root description.—Medium in thickness, fibrous; white in color.
      • Rooting habit.—Freely branching habit; medium density.

      • Plant form/growth habit.—Upright and uniform plant habit; strong and sturdy plants; moderately vigorous growth habit.
      • Plant height.—About 33 cm.
      • Plant diameter or spread.—About 30 cm to 33 cm.
      • Lateral branches.—Length: About 30 cm to 33 cm. Diameter: About 4 mm. Internode length: About 2 cm to 3 cm. Aspect: Mostly upright to slightly slanting outwardly. Strength: Strong, sturdy. Texture: Tomentose. Color: Close to 147C.

  • Garden performance: Plants of the new Achillea have been observed to have good garden performance and tolerate wind, rain and to tolerate high temperatures about 35° C. and to be hardy to USDA Hardiness Zone 6.
