Abstract

A new and distinct Agastache plant characterized by pink flowers in large inflorescences, a long bloom time, a very dense, medium compact habit, good winter hardiness, and very high vigor.

Botanical classification: Agastache hybrid.

Varietal denomination: ‘Pink Pearl’.

BACKGROUND OF THE NEW PLANT

The present invention comprises a new and distinct Agastache plant, of the family Lamiaceae, having the varietal name ‘Pink Pearl’. This new variety is one of several selections of new Agastache using hardy and dwarf Agastache species in the breeding lines to provide hardiness and compactness. ‘Pink Pearl’ is a selection from a cross of unpatented, proprietary seedlings Agastache 76-2, as the seed parent, and Agastache 64-3, as the pollen parent, in Canby, Oregon. ‘Pink Pearl’ was selected for its compact habit, hardiness, and pink flowers in large, dense heads.

When compared to its seed parent, the new variety is larger and hardier with pink flowers rather than coral-orange flowers. When compared to its pollen parent, the new variety is shorter and exhibits better branching. When compared to Agastache plant named ‘Kudos Coral’ (U.S. Plant Pat. No. 25,613), the new variety is larger and exhibits better branching.

The new variety has only been reproduced by asexual propagation (cuttings and micropropagation). Each of the progeny exhibits identical characteristics to the original plant. Asexual propagation by stem cuttings and micropropagation using apical buds and nodes performed in Canby, Oregon shows that the characteristics and distinctions described herein come true to form and are established and transmitted through succeeding propagations. The present invention has not been evaluated under all possible environmental conditions. The phenotype may vary with variations in environment without a change in the genotype of the plant.

When compared to other Agastache plants known to the breeder, the new variety is characterized by the following:

• • 1. Bright pink flowers on numerous inflorescences;
  • 2. Long bloom time;
  • 3. A medium, compact habit;
  • 4. Good winter hardiness; and
  • 5. Very high vigor, growth rate of approximately 60 cm per year.

DETAILED BOTANICAL DESCRIPTION

The following is a detailed description of the new variety based on observations of 4-month-old plants in late May grown outside in full sun in 1 gallon containers in Canby, Oregon (USDA Zone 8). Temperatures range from a high of 35° C. in August to a low of 0° C. in January. Normal rainfall in Canby, Oregon is around 1 m per year. Color references are based on The 2007 R.H.S. Colour Chart of The Royal Horticultural Society of London, 5^th Edition.

    • Corolla.—Length: 32.0 mm. Width: 8.0 mm. Description: Tube measures 27.0 mm long and from 1.0 to 4.0 mm wide, flaring into 5 lobes. The inner and outer surfaces are RHS 47C. The inner surface is glabrous and the outer surface is pubescent. The two top, joined lobes are oblong in shape, have obtuse tips, and entire margins (measuring 3.0 mm long and 5.0 mm wide). Two of the three lower lobes spread sideways and are reflexed, have acute tips, and entire margins (measuring 3.0 mm long and 3.0 mm wide). The final lower lobe is cupped, broadly ovate, notched at the tip, and has a serrate margin (measuring 5.0 mm wide and 4.0 mm deep).
