Definitions

  • the present invention concerns the field of sealing and packaging apparatuses and methods, and particularly the field of stretch film sealing and packaging.
  • Stretch film sealing and packaging is widely used to package various food products ranging from produce to fresh meat.
  • Stretch film is extensible but resilient, enabling it to be wrapped tightly around a package, and can self-adhere by heat and/or pressure.
  • Such films can be made, for example, from polyethylene, polyvinyl chloride, butadiene rubber, and the like.
  • Such machinery typically includes a vacuum port to pull the trailing flap of film downward, enabling a lower transverse rod moving faster than the conveyor belt on which the package is moving to fold the flap underneath the package.
  • a second vacuum port pulls down the front flap which is folded under the package by a roller or similar means. The package is then transferred to a heated belt or pad to seal the film flaps to the bottom of the package.
  • stretch/shrink film has recently been developed which has characteristics of both stretch and heat shrink films. That is, it has a certain measure of resilience and self-adherence while also having the ability to shrink when subjected to heat.
  • Such film is manufactured by the Cryovac Division of .R. Grace.
  • Conventional stretch wrapping and shrink wrapping machines often do not take full advantage of the properties of stretch/shrink film.
  • the former machines generally do not provide for shrinkage, since the seal of the front and rear flaps on the bottom of the package would be weakened thereby, while the latter generally do not provide for stretching of the film around the product.
  • OBJECTS AND SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION It is therefore an object of the present invention to overcome the shortcomings of prior art stretch film sealing and packaging apparatuses and methods. It is a further object of the invention to conserve film in stretch wrapping applications.
  • a sealing and packaging apparatus comprises a film forming means [section] for forming stretch or stretch/shrink film tightly around a product, and a longitudinal sealing means [section] disposed adjacent to the film forming means [section] for making a longitudinal seal in the side edges of the film along the length of the product.

  • the film is cross sealed at the ends of the product [item] .
  • the cross seal is preferably hermetic[, and the step of sealing the longitudinal seam preferably includes making a tack seal in the seam, thermally sealing the seam, and quickly cooling the seam] .
