Description

"A Wrapping Film Dispenser"
The invention relates to a wrapping film dispenser for dispensing plastics stretch film, and in particular to a dispenser for manually wrapping plastics stretch film about a loaded pallet or the like.
Various types of dispensers for wrapping plastics film about a package are known. There are, however, a number of serious disadvantages with known wrapping film dispensers. One of the most serious problems is the risk to a user in dispensing the film in that the side edges of the film engage against the edges of a users hands and may cause serious friction burns. Another problem is the general manoeuvrability of the dispensers in use as they must often be used for wrapping in situations where complete manoeuvrability is required to ensure that the changes in direction required on wrapping to adequately wrap and retain goods on a pallet is achieved.
This invention is therefore directed towards providing an improved wrapping film dispenser which will overcome at least some of these practical difficulties.
According to the invention there is provided a wrapping film dispenser comprising:-
a support body having at least two rolls of wrapping film;
the rolls of wrapping film being spaced-apart on the support body to define a gap; and
hand grip means for mounting in the gap between adjacent rolls of wrapping film. In a particularly preferred embodiment of the invention friction burn preventing means are provided for mounting between the hand grip means and the adjacent edges of the rolls of wrapping film. Preferably the friction burn preventing means comprises flange means between the hand grip means and the adjacent edges of the rolls of wrapping film.
In one embodiment of the invention the flange means is integral with the hand gripping means.
In a preferred arrangement the hand gripping means comprises a sleeve for engaging the support body. Preferably the sleeve comprises at least two sleeve parts which engage around the support body. In a preferred arrangement the sleeve parts are interconnected for movement between an open configuration with the sleeve parts partially separated for mounting to the support body to a fitted closed configuration with the sleeve parts substantially embracing the support body. Most preferably the sleeve parts are hingedly interconnected for movement between the open and closed fitted configurations. Typically the hinge means is integrally formed with the sleeve.
In a preferred arrangement hand operated friction braking means are provided between the sleeve and the support body. Preferably the inner dimensions of the sleeve are slightly larger than the outer dimensions of the gap of the support body so that, in use, the sleeve is movable by hand gripping pressure from a relaxed position in which the support body is free to rotate on the sleeve to a braking position in which the sleeve is engaged with the support body to slow or prevent rotation of the support body in the sleeve. In a particularly preferred embodiment of the invention the sleeve includes flange means which in use are interposed between the hand gripping means and the adjacent edges of the adjacent rolls of wrapping film to substantially prevent friction burns on dispensing of the film from the rolls, during wrapping.
In a preferred arrangement the support body comprises a core on which a roll of wrapping film is mounted. Preferably the roll of wrapping film is fixed to the core.
In a preferred arrangement at least two rolls of wrapping film are mounted on the core, the rolls being spaced-apart to define therebetween a gap for receiving the hand gripping means. Typically the core is substantially cylindrical and the rolls are co-axial with the axis of the core.
In a preferred arrangement the rolls of wrapping film are wound onto the support body.
In another arrangement the core is mounted on an internal support body. In this case preferably at least two cores are fixed to the internal support body.
The invention also provides a hand gripping means for use in association with a wrapping film dispenser, particularly the wrapping film dispenser of the invention, the hand gripping means comprising a sleeve for mounting to a wrapping film roll supporting body.
In a particulary preferred embodiment of this aspect of the invention the sleeve comprises at least two sleeve parts which engage around the support body. Preferably the sleeve parts are interconnected for movement between an open configuration with the sleeve parts partially separated for fitting to a support body to a itted closed configuration with the sleeve parts substantially embracing a wrapping film roll support body. Typically the sleeve parts are hingedly interconnected for movement between the open and closed fitted configurations.
Ideally the hinge means is integrally formed with the sleeve.
In a particularly preferred embodiment of this aspect of the invention the sleeve includes friction braking means. In this case preferably the inner dimensions of the sleeve are slightly greater than the outer dimensions of the support body to which the sleeve is to be mounted so that the sleeve is movable by hand gripping pressure from a relaxed position in which the support body is free to rotate in the sleeve to a braking position in which the sleeve is engaged with the support body to slow or prevent rotation of the support body in the sleeve.
In a particularly preferred arrangement the sleeve includes friction burn preventing means. Preferably the friction burn preventing means comprises a flange means which is preferably integral with the sleeve adjacent each end of the sleeve for interposing in use between the hand gripping sleeve and the adjacent side edges of rolls of dispensing film. Typically the sleeve is integrally moulded from a plastics material.
In a further aspect 'the invention provides a roll of wrapping film mounted on a core for use with a dispenser according to the invention or a hand gripping means according to the invention.
In a still further aspect the invention provides a wrapping film assembly for use with a dispenser according to the invention or a hand gripping means according to the invention, the wrapping film assembly comprising a support body on which is mounted at least two rolls of wrapping film, the rolls of wrapping film being spaced-apart to define therebetween a gap for receiving a hand gripping means. Preferably there are two rolls of wrapping film which are spaced-apart to define therebetween a single gap for receiving a hand gripping means.
Preferably, the rolls of wrapping film are would onto the support body.
In an alternative arrangement the assembly comprises an inner support body and at least two rolls of plastics film, the rolls being mountable to the support body to be spaced-apart to define therebetween a gap for receiving a hand gripping means.
Most preferably the wrapping film assembly includes a hand gripping means for mounting to or mounted in the gap between adjacent rolls of wrapping film.
The invention will be more clearly understood from the following description thereof given by way of example only with reference to the accompanying drawings in which:-
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a dispenser according to the invention;
Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the dispenser of Fig. 1 in use;
Figs. 3 and 4 are end, partially cross-sectional, views of the dispenser in different positions of use; Fig. 5 is a perspective view of a hand gripping means according to the invention;
Fig. 6 is an elevational view of the hand gripping means of Fig. 5;
Fig. 7 is an end view of the hand gripping means of Fig. 5;
Figs. 8 and 9 are cross-sectional views of part of the hand gripping means in different configurations;
Fig. 10 is a perspective view of a wrapping film assembly according to the invention;
Fig. 11 is an elevational view of the assembly of Fig. 10?
Fig. 12 is a diagrammatic view of a pallet containing packages wrapped according to the invention; and
Fig. 13 is a side, partially cross-sectional, view of another wrapping film assembly according to the invention.
Referring to the drawings and initially to Figs. 1 to 12 thereof there is illustrated a wrapping film dispenser according to the invention indicated generally by the reference numeral 1. The dispenser 1 comprises a support body in this case in -.the form of a central cylindrical core 2 which is typically of cardboard material. Rolls 3, 4 of plastics stretch film material are in this case wound directly onto the core 2. The rolls 3, 4 of wrapping film are spaced-apart along the core 2 to define a gap 5. A hand gripping means indicated generally by the reference numeral 10 is mounted in the gap 5 between the adjacent rolls of wrapping film 3, 4.
In this case the hand gripping means 10 comprises a sleeve for engaging the gap 5 in the support core 2. It will be particularly apparent from Figs. 5 to 9 that the sleeve comprises two sleeve parts 11, 12 which engage around the gap 5 in the support core 2. The sleeve parts 11, 12 are interconnected in this case by hinges 13 for movement between an open configuration (see Fig. 9) with the sleeve parts 11, 12 partially separated for fitting to the core 2 to a fitted closed configuration (see Fig. 8) with the sleeve parts 11, 12 substantially embracing the support core 2 in the gap 5 as illustrated, for example, in Fig. 1. On assembly around the core 2 a small opening 19 is retained between the sleeve parts 11, 12.
Each of the sleeve parts 11, 12 includes integral flanges 15, 16 at each end which are interposed in use between the hand gripping means 10 and the side edges of the rolls of film 3, 4 to substantially prevent friction burns to the user on dispensing the film from the rolls 3, 4. The hinges 13 interlink the flange parts 15, 16 on one side thereof.
In this case the hand gripping sleeve 10 is integrally moulded from a plastics material and the hinges 13 are integral plastic hinges so that the hand gripping means is relatively inexpensive, light-weight and easy to fit and remove from the core 2 as required.
Hand operated friction braking means are provided between the hand gripping sleeve 10 and the support core 2. In this case the inner diameter of the sleeve 10 is slightly greater than the outer diameter of the core 2 leaving a small opening 19 at the gap 5 so that in use, as will be particularly apparent from Figs. 3 and 4 the sleeve 10 is movable by hand gripping pressure from a relaxed position (see Fig. 3) in which the support core 2 is free to rotate in the sleeve 10 to a braking position in which the opening 19 is substantially closed and the sleeve 10 is engaged with the support core 2 to slow or prevent rotation of the support core 2 in the sleeve 10 and hence substantially brake the dispensing action of plastics film from the rolls 3, 4. In this way a user, by hand gripping pressure alone, can control the speed of dispensing and the stretching of the plastics film as it is being dispensed, particularly at the changes in direction as the film is wrapped around packages 20, for example, on a pallet 21 as illustrated in Fig. 12.
The friction burn preventing means is a very important aspect of the invention as it is vital to ensure that the user is protected during dispensing of the film from the rolls 3, 4. In addition, the flanges 15, 16 assist in guiding the film from the rolls 3, 4 during dispensing.
It will be appreciated that while in a particular embodiment of the invention described the rolls of wrapping film are co-axial with the axis of the core on which they are mounted there may be some situations, for example, for particular wrapping requirements in which the rolls of film are offset. For example, the core may be of stepped configuration.
It will also be appreciated that the invention relates to a wrapping film assembly (see especially Figs. 10 and 11) comprising a support body and rolls of dispensing film with a gap between the rolls for receiving a hand gripping means. The invention also relates to a dispenser incorporating the hand gripping means and to the hand gripping means per se (see especially Figs. 5 to 9) .
Referring to Fig. 13 there is illustrated another wrapping film assembly which is similar to the wrapping film assembly described above with reference to Figs. 1 to 12 and like parts are assigned the same reference numerals. In this case the wrapping film is in each case wound on an individual core 30 and the cores 30 are mounted, preferably locked, onto a central support body 25. In this way a user may himself assemble the dispensing film rolls onto a central core. This arrangement also provides for utilisation of all the plastics film used in the assemblies of the invention.
Many variations on the specific embodiments of the invention described will be readily apparent and accordingly the invention is not limited to the embodiments hereinbefore described which may be varied in both construction and detail.
