Description
PROCESS FOR UMINATING PROTECTIVE PLASTIC FILMS ONTO PAPER DOCUMENTS
The invention concerns a chemico-phys ical process aimed at preventing attempts to counterfeit documents on paper. It is well known that writing on such documents, especially writing on bank cheques, can be erased and replaced by different writing thus enabling illegal withdrawals to be made from current accounts held by banks, or making possible other operations of an unlawful kind.
In trying to deal with this risk attempts have been made to spread chemicals on cheques so as to fix the writing more firmly onto the paper, but many problems arise over applying this method to large numbers of cheques and it is not believed to be a really secure way of eliminating the forgeries that at present occur.
Purpose of the invention is to ensure better protection for cheques and at the same time simplify the method of doing it, as will be explained below.
Subject of the invention is a process for protecting hand written or printed writing on documents made on paper,
especially bank cheques and the like.
On these documents, especially on those parts requiring protection, application is made of means able to prevent removal of writing and also to repel any new writing, whether hand or printed, inserted to counterfeit what was originally there.
This is done by making a sheet of flexible plastic material adhere to the document and especially to those parts of it needing protection, the face of said plastic sheet to be so superimposed having been impregnated with an acrylic modified polyurethane polymer, after which adequate pressure is applied to said sheet.
This pressure bonds the functional groups of the polymer (N-C-O) to those of the cellulose (O-H) thus creating a stable association between said sheet and the document by means of what amounts to cold plasticization.
In this way it becomes impossible to remove the p ro t ec ted writ ing and replace i t by c ounte r fe it ed writing without at the same time removing a layer of the paper so making the fraud obvious.
Pressure can be applied to the sheet laid over the document by a rigid blade or some other suitable means, or even by the fingers only.
By applying pressure together with heat the plastic sheet will adhere more quickly to the document to be protected. Preferably the impregnated sheets can be inserted in the cheque banks between one cheque and the next, and associated to a second protective sheet of paper or some unimpregnated material which is detached when the operation is completed, the purpose of this being to avoid any accidental premature chemical reaction between the impregnated
surface and the cheque itself.
The above second sheet would preferably consist of an extension of the first sheet, of practically the same length, folded back against the impregnated surface until required. When the cheque has been filled up said extension can be unfolded to free the impregnated surface and enable it to adhere to the completed cheque.
The second protective sheet can then be detached by tearing along a prepared tear-off line.
Alternatively the chemical could be applied by superimposing over the document a sheet of flexible plastic material impregnated on the superimposing surface with a copolymer thermoplastic polymer of reticulated polyvinyl acetate that turns fluid under heat and hardens when it cools.
Therefore by simultaneously applying heat and pressure to the impregnated sheet superimposed over the document to be protected, said polymer becomes incorporated in both the writing and the paper underneath making it impossible to put new counterfeited writing or remove the protected writing altready there without at the same time taking off a layer of paper and exposing the attempted fraud.
Simultaneous generation of heat and pressure on the impregnated sheet superimposed over the document to be protected may occur by passing the document and said sheet between a pair of parallel rollers, at least one of which is heated by electric elements, and making them rotate manually or by some automatic means.
The pair of rollers may be supported by a box-shaped structure to stand on a table, at least one of the two rollers being connected to the shaft of an electric motor worked by push buttons.
Electric feed can be supplied independently by batteries mounted inside the structure, or obtained by plugging it into the mains.
Simultaneous generation of heat and pressure on the impregnated sheet superimposed over the document to be ptotected may take place by passing a hand-pressed roller across the impregnated sheet whose active side is superimposed over the document laid out on a flat surface, said roller projecting from a hand-held pocket-sized structure and being heated from inside by electric elements, or else using a rigid body and heat conductor placed at the end of a pocket-sized structure that can be held in the hand or in any case having a handle.
Heating elements are contained inside said body.
Alternatively chemicals can be applied to the document by an atomized spray, the document having been previously covered by a stencil with windows cut into it so as to expose only those parts to be chemically treated, especially the amounts and other essential indications , so apυlication of chemical may be limited to those parts.
The chemicals comprise polymervinylaerylic, phthalie ester, fluoridized wax, ketonic diluent: and chlorinated solvent.
The approximate percentages considered most suitable are: polymervinylacrylic 30%, phthalie ester 4%, fluoridized wax 7 % , ketonic diluent 50%, chlorinated solvent 9%.
Characteristics and purposes of the invention will become still clearer from the example, of its execution given here below, illustrated by diagrammatic flgures.

The inside face 18 of said sheets 15-17 is coated with a thermoplastic layer, hard at ambient temperature, which turns fluid under heat and hardens again when cool.
To compile the cheque 11 the sheet 15 has been raised as shown in the figure.
After compilation the cheque 11 and the sheet 15 are both detached from the cheque book 10 and are placed as a pair in the table-supported machine 20 in Fig. 2, and rested on the shelf 21 made to receive them.
Said machine comprises a box-shaped structure 22 with sides
23 and 24 that idly support the rollers 25 and 26 with parallel shafts 27 and 28 placed side by side.
Said shafts are kinetically connected by the pair of gear wheels 29 and 30.
The shaft 27 is connected to the ratiomotor 31 with an electric motor.
Electric heating elements 33 inside the cylinder 25 are connected to a system of rotating collectors 37.
Electricity is supplied from the mains by the cable 36.
The electric heating elements are operated by button switch
34 and the electric motor by button switch 35.
To work the machine switches 34 and 35 are pressed to turn on heat and start the rollers rotating, and the already mentioned pair 11-15 of the cheque 11 and thermoplastic-coated sheet 15 are placed on the shelf 21 and pushed against the rollers through the aperture 39.
As the pair 11-15 pass through the rollers, the simultaneous application of heat and pressure on sheet 15 causes the thermoplastic polymer to become fluid and become incorporated both in the writing and in the paper under it and producing, when subsequently cooled, a practically single body.
The cheque book 41 in Fig. 3 comprises the cheques 42 43 44 and sheets 45 46 47 inserted between them whose side
49, facing the cheque, is impregnated with an acrylic modified polyurethane polymer. Said sheets 45 46 47 have an extension 48 folded back inside along the edge 45' in order to protect the unused cheques from any chemical action that might come from the impregnated surface.
To compile the first cheque 42 the first impregnated sheet 45 has been raised, as shown in the figure.
After compiling the cheque as usual the extension 48 is removed thus freeing the impregnated side of the sheet 45 which is then placed in contact with the cheque 42, as can be seen in Figure 4.
Using the fingers, a blade or something similar to exercise pressure across the sheet 45 placed over the cheque 42, a chemical reaction is set up between the functional groups of the polymer (N-C-O) and those of the cellulose (O-H) incorporating both the writing and the paper base and giving rise to a kind of cold plasticization or to a practically single body.
Fig. 5 shows a pocket-sized machine 50 serving the same purpose as the table-supported machine 20 already described. Said machine 50 comprises a flat box-shaped structure 51 and has a semicylindrical head 52 on the smaller side. This structure contains the electric batteries 53 54 connected by means of the switch 54 to electrical heating elements 55 placed within the semicylindrical body 56 made of heat conducting cement.
Said head is covered with a metal lamination 57.
On closing the switch 54 the electric elements transmit heat through the body 56 to the metal lamination 57.
By taking hold of the machine by its end 58 opposite to the head and closing the switch 54, the chemico-physical reaction takes place on the cheque-thermoplastic sheet pair 11-15, already described, by pressing the element- -heated head 52 on the back of sheet 15 as shown in the figure.
Fig. 6 illustrates a mode of applying the chemical mixture as invented by means of an atomized spray of said mixture.
To do this use is made of the rectangular stencil 70 with windows 71 72 73 74 cut in it corresponding to the positions of the writing on the cheque to be protected. Said stencil 70 is laid over the cheque 81 in the cheque book 80 making the windows 71-74 coincide with the zones
82-85 on the cheque already filled up with the amount in figures and letters and with the payee's name.
The product from the can 76 is then sprayed on as indicated by 86 and in its atomized form will cover the zones 82-85 producing the effects described above.
