Definitions
- This invention relates to medical devices for injecting living bodies and, more particularly, to safety features incorporated therewith.
- a disposable syringe having a needle protected with a retractable sleeve comprising, a cylindrical body having an open end and a closed end; a needle having a longitudinal bore therethrough from an inner end to an outer end; a plunger slidably contained in the cylindrical body through the open end; a bore through the closed end carrying the inner end of the needle; and, a retractable sleeve disposed over the needle wherein the retractable sleeve comprises a plurality of longitudinal slats concentrically disposed about the needle parallel thereto and carried on inner ends by the closed end, and an outer end piece having a bore therethrough connecting outer ends of the plurality of longitudinal slats, the bore having the needle passing therethrough whereby the outer end piece can be slid back along the needle from an extended position covering an outer tip of the needle to bow the plurality of longitudinal slats
- a typical prior art hypodermic syringe 10 includes a barrel 12 having a moving plunger 14 therein.
- a needle 16 having a sharp beveled tip 18 extends from the end opposite the end of the barrel 12 into which the plunger 14 is inserted.
- the needle 16 is removably attached over a small cylindrical projection 20 on the end of the barrel 12.
- the needle 16 is covered by a removeable cap 22 for safety purposes.
- the problem to be solved and avoided is the accidental sticking of users of the syringe 10 by the tip 18 after use where the tip 18 may carry body fluids containing agents of hepatitis B, AIDS, and the like.
- Accidental needle stick is a very common problem in the health care industry and besides the risk of serious illness or even death as a result thereof, the insurance industry spends over a billion dollars a year in the testing of individuals who have been subjected to post-use needle stick.
- the 1979 patent of Alvarez proposed a retractable plastic protective sleeve 24 over the needle 16 as depicted in Figures 3 and 4.
- the Alvarez sleeve 24 has an inner hub 26 which fits around the base 28 of the needle 16 and an outer hub 30 through which the tip 18 of the needle 16 passes.
- the inner and outer hubs 26, 30 are connected by curved slats 32.
- a protective sleeve representative of the Alvarez and Kuracina type sleeves is depicted in its typical prior art form as an add-on device to a hypodermic syringe in Figure 5.
- the foregoing object has been achieved in a medical device having a needle extending from a body portion thereof, by the improvement of the present invention for protecting the needle with a retractable sleeve comprising, a bore in the body portion carrying an inner end of the needle; a plurality of longitudinal slats concentrically disposed about the needle parallel thereto and carried on inner ends by the body portion; and, an outer end piece having a bore therethrough connecting outer ends of the plurality of longitudinal slats, the bore having the needle passing therethrough whereby the outer end piece can be slid back along the needle from an extended position covering an outer tip of the needle to bow the plurality of longitudinal slats outwardly and expose the outer tip as the outer end piece is moved to a retracted position adjacent the * body portion.
- the body portion, the plurality of longitudinal slats, and the outer end piece are of unitary construction.
- the body portion has an outward- extending hub concentrically surrounding the bore in the body portion carrying the inner end of the needle; the plurality of longitudinal slats have the inner ends carried by a cylindrical collar; the plurality of longitudinal slats and the cylindrical collar are of unitary construction; the cylindrical collar has a central bore therethrough having a diameter substantially identical to an outer diameter of the cylindrical hub of the body portion; and, the cylindrical collar is permanently attached to the hub.

- Figure 2 is a simplified drawing of a prior art hypodermic syringe with the needle and protective cap removed.
- Figure 3 is a simplified, partially cutaway drawing of a prior art protective sleeve on a hypodermic syringe in its extended position.
- Figure 4 is a simplified, partially cutaway drawing of a prior art protective sleeve on a hypodermic syringe in its retracted position.
- Figure 5 is a simplified, partially cutaway drawing of a prior art approach to adding a protective sleeve to a hypodermic syringe as an add-on device.

- Figure 7 is a simplified, partially cutaway drawing of another embodiment of the present invention for adding a protective sleeve to a hypodermic syringe as an integral part thereof.
- Figure 6 shows a first embodiment of the present invention as comprising a unitary syringe 10' comprising a barrel 12 and plunger 14 with a cylindrical projection 34 on the end of the barrel 12 opposite the plunger 14.
- the projection 34 carries a needle 16 in a central bore 36 thereof.
- the projection 34 also carries the inner ends of a plurality of slats 38 of a Kuracina type protective sleeve 40.
- the slats 38 are concentrically disposed about the needle 16 and terminate at their outer ends in an end piece 42 having a preferred transparent bell end for viewing the tip 18 of the needle 16.
- a locking collar 43 and bias spring 44 are disposed over the slats 38 in the usual manner.
- a protective hard cover 46 is carried by a peripheral cylindrical shoulder area 48 provided in the projection 34 for the purpose.
- the projection 34' has a small diameter central portion 50 containing the bore 36 with the needle 16 therein and a cylindrical collar 52 is permanently attached over the central portion with plastic glue,- heat/sonic welding, or the like.
- the slats 38 and end piece 42 are formed as part of and carried by the collar 52.
- the outer periphery of the collar forms the peripheral cylindrical shoulder area 48 which supports the hard cover 46.
