Definitions
- This invention relates to a method and apparatus for applying a stretchable plastics film wrapping around a composite assembly of bales, and has been developed
- bales of agricultural crop material such as hay, straw or grass
- bales of grass (after cutting of the grass and formation of the grass into bales before the grass has dried to a form suitable for hay) is being used to an ever increasing extent in order to form silage, with the grass fermenting to form silage over a relatively short period of time while contained in substantially airtight and weatherproof manner by stretch film wrapping.
- Bale wrappers are used to apply the stretchable film, and which usually comprise a support frame, a table or platform mounted on the support frame and having a pair of laterally spaced apart and generally horizontal rollers on which the bale is positioned and which rotate the bale about its longitudinal axis, a stand carrying a reel of stretchable film which is withdrawn from the reel and applied around the bale, and means for causing relative rotation between the reel and the table about a substantially vertical axis.
- the combined effects of these two rotations is to withdraw the film and apply overlapping windings of film around the bale until the bale is completely enclosed. This wrapping usually continues until two complete covering layers have been applied, and then the wrapped bale is discharged from the apparatus by tipping of the table.
- bale wrapper apparatus which achieve the necessary relative rotation between the table and the reel
- first of which comprises a rotating table type of apparatus in which the entire table, rollers and bale are driven about a substantially vertical axis while at the same time the bale is rotated about its longitudinal axis by the rollers.
- second type of apparatus comprises an orbiting "satellite" type of dispenser reel which is caused to orbit in a horizontal plane about the table (which remains stationary relative to the support frame) while the bale is rotated about its longitudinal axis by the rollers.
- the present invention is concerned with both types of bale wrapper apparatus, and seeks to provide a more
- each bale is loaded singly onto the rollers of the table, undergoes application of film around the bale, and then is discharged.
- Bales are usually supplied in the form of cylinders (socalled “big bales” or “round bales"), or in the form of rectangular cross section bales, and therefore in addition to wrapping of the sides of each bale, it is also necessary to wrap the opposed end faces of each bale.
- the length of film used to cover the two end faces of the bale is approximately equal to the length required to cover the cylindrical surface of the bale i.e. approximately one half of the length of film withdrawn from the reel is used to cover the opposed end faces.
- the supply cost of the film itself is nearly one half of the total cost.
- the present invention therefore addresses this problem and provides a solution to it by a novel design of bale wrapping apparatus.
- a method of applying a stretchable plastics film around two bales arranged in end to end relationship to form a composite wrapped package said method employing a bale wrapper apparatus comprising a table having a pair of
- the invention therefore provides a method of wrapping two bales simultaneously, which can be carried out in less time per unit bale than previous practice of loading, wrapping, and unloading wrapped bales individually.
- the film wrapping forms a tightly assembled package in which less film per unit bale is used than is required for individual bale wrapping, since one end face of each bale (the inner facing ends) do not need to be covered. This enables less film to be used, which in the case of cylindrical bales, can result in
- the rollers of the table will be made of sufficient length in order to allow the bales to be loaded thereon in end to end relationship, and this loading may be achieved in any convenient manner.
- a lifter mechanism may be mounted on the apparatus and be operated to engage a bale on the ground and lift it onto one region of the rollers, and then may be operated subsequently in order to engage a second bale and lift it onto an adjacent region of the rollers so that the two bales substantially abut each other.
- the support for the reel is mounted on a fixed part of the frame of the apparatus, and the table is caused to rotate about an axis which is
- the loading of the table may be carried out conveniently by loading one bale onto one region of the rollers (preferably with one end face of the bale located substantially adjacent to a mid-region of the rollers), and then causing the table to rotate through approximately one half revolution, so that the second bale can be loaded onto an opposed region of the rollers whereby the two bales can be located substantially end to end in abutting relationship.
- a single lifting device may be used to load all of the bales onto the table.
- bales onto the table may be loaded using fork lift arrangements, or other lifting arrangements provided on the front or rear of tractors.
- the table of the bale wrapper apparatus is pivotally mounted on the apparatus for movement about a substantially horizontal axis in order to effect tipping of the composite wrapped package.
- This tipping movement may be in a direction perpendicular to the longitudinal axes of the rollers, but more preferably is in a plane parallel to the longitudinal axes of the rollers so that the composite wrapped package can be discharged in a smooth sliding motion over the surface of the rollers and onto the ground, with the composite package standing on the ground as a column resting on one of its opposed end faces.
- This sliding movement reduces the risk of damage being done to the film wrapping, which is very
- a holding device is mounted on the apparatus and which is operative to hold one end of the composite wrapped package which is remote from the pivotal mounting of the table.
- the table may therefore pivot to a substantially upright
- the composite package may stand upright, like a column, on the ground, and
- the method of the invention disclosed herein will achieve economies of usage of film wrapping material, and also the loading, wrapping, and unloading time per unit bale will be reduced, as compared with current methods of individual loading, wrapping and discharge.
- the discharged composite wrapped package will contain two separate bales, which can be readily handled, and therefore subsequent loading, transport and unloading operations can be carried out more speedily, per unit bale, than with existing individually wrapped bales.
- the method of the invention is particularly suitable for use in applying film wrapping around two cylindrical bales arranged end to end, but the invention does also contemplate the wrapping of bales of other cross sections, provided that they are arranged in end to end relationship, and including square or rectangular section bales. Further, it is not essential that the two bales be placed in exact abutting relationship, provided that their facing ends are arranged fairly close to each other, since the tensile force generated by the film wrapping as it is applied around the composite bales can draw them together into abutting relationship.
- stretchable plastics film material which is now available for use in wrapping bales of crop material have such strength that, after pre-stretching of the film material prior to wrapping around the bales, this material then contracts over a period of time by its own inherent elasticity, and this tensile force generated is sufficient to maintain the two bales assembled together as a composite package, and with little risk of one bale tending to move laterally, or longitudinally relative to the other.
- the preferred use of the invention is in carrying out wrapping of composite bales of two bales arranged end to end, but the invention does not exclude the possibility of more than two bales being wrapped together in end to end
- bales wrapped together end to end comprises a preferred utilisation of the invention.
- one preferred arrangement comprises loading of a first bale on the table, carrying out one half
- a loading arm may be provided on the apparatus which is capable of lifting two bales onto the table in a single operation.
- the time involved to discharge a composite package of two wrapped bales is no greater than that involved in discharging an individually wrapped bale, and therefore this aspect of the overall process involves a 50% saving in time.
- the film dispenser reel operates in
- a cutting and clamping arrangement is provided which is operative to gather the film web as it travels between the reel and the composite wrapped package, upon tipping of the table, and then can be operated, manually or automatically, so that the cutting and clamping mechanism clamps the gathered film web and then cuts the film so as to allow the composite wrapped package to be discharged, while holding the cut end ready for a further cycle of operation, after return of the table to the
- the cutting and clamping arrangement is preferably of the type disclosed in more detail in EP 0291483.
- the invention has been defined above primarily in connection with novel method steps in the wrapping of a composite package of two bales arranged end to end, but this invention also includes a novel bale wrapper apparatus for carrying out this method.
- Figure 1 is a schematic side view of an embodiment of bale wrapper apparatus for use in carrying out a method according to the invention of wrapping two bales in end to end relationship to form a composite wrapped package;
- Figure 2 is a schematic plan view, with parts omitted, of the apparatus shown in Figure 1 ;
- Figure 3 is a schematic side view showing a rearwardly tilted position taken up by a pivotally mounted table of the apparatus shown in Figures 1 and 2, after tipping to a discharge position in order to unload a wrapped composite package; and,
- Figure 4 is a schematic illustration of a preferred development of the invention.
- bale wrapper apparatus for use in applying a stretchable plastics film around two bales arranged in end to end relationship to form a composite wrapped package.
- the bale wrapper apparatus is designated generally by reference 10 and comprises a towable support frame 11 supported at one end by wheels 12 and having a drawbar 13 at its forward end to enable the apparatus 10 to be coupled up behind a tractor or other propelling vehicle.
- the apparatus comprises a table or platform 14 which has a pair of laterally spaced rollers 15 and on which can be loaded a pair of bales 16 in end to end relationship as shown in Figure 1.
- the rollers 15 can be operated to rotate the bales 16 about their common longitudinal axis 17, which will be a substantially horizontal axis when the apparatus 10 is standing on level ground.
- the bales 16 may comprise
- rollers 16 cylindrical bales or "big bales”, also referred to as “round bales”, and will usually be loaded in such a way that their facing ends 18 are located close to each other, and near to a mid-region of the rollers 15. However, it is not essential that the rollers 16 be loaded exactly in abutting
- a support 19 is mounted fixedly on the frame 11 of the apparatus, and carries a dispenser reel 20 of stretchable plastics film which can be withdrawn in order to apply overlapping windings of film wrapping around the bales 16.
- the illustrated schematic embodiment comprises a rotating table type of bale wrapper apparatus, in which table 14 is mounted rotatably on a tipping frame 21 via a rotary mounting 22, whereby frame 14 and rollers 15 can be caused to rotate about an upright axis 23 which will be substantially vertical when the apparatus 10 is standing on level ground, and the bales 16 are located substantially such that the adjacent faces 18 are located closely adjacent to axis 23.
- bales 16 may take place in generally similar manner to current designs of bale wrapper apparatus, one of which is described in more detail in GB Patent No 2159489B.
- a rotating table or platform type of bale wrapper apparatus in which film reel support 19 remains fixed, it is within the scope of the invention for the method to be carried out with an orbiting satellite type of bale wrapper apparatus, in which the film dispenser reel is caused to orbit in a
- the invention also includes the possibility of further examples of ways of causing relative movement between the table and the film reel support, in order to withdraw film from the reel and apply it as stretch film wrapping to the bales.
- the table can remain fixed, but the support can be caused to move along a closed path around the axis which does not need to be a circular path, and which may be e.g.
- the method of the invention provides a unique method of applying stretchable plastics film around two bales arranged in end to end relationship, and is carried out by first loading the two bales 16 onto the rollers 15 of the table 14 in end to end relationship by use of any suitable loading mechanism.
- This may involve use of a built-in loading mechanism mounted on frame 11, and which is operative e.g. to load two bales simultaneously onto the rollers 15.
- the loading mechanism may apply a first bale onto one region of the rollers 15, and then the table 14 may be caused to rotate through approximately one half revolution, whereby the opposed region of the rollers 15 is now available to receive a further bale loaded thereon by the same loading mechanism.
- bales any other means may be employed to load the bales, such as fork lift loaders, or tractor mounted lifting mechanisms.
- the bales 16 are caused to rotate about longitudinal axis 17, simultaneously with rotation of table 14 about axis 23, and this enables film to be withdrawn from the reel 20 (after attachment or initial wrapping partly around the circumference of the two bales), and this film is applied as successive overlapping windings around the two bales until the outer peripheral surface of the two bales is covered (a cylindrical surface when
- tipping frame 21 is then caused to tip rearwardly through approximately 90° about a pivot mounting 25 at the rear end of main frame 11, so that the tipping frame 21, table 14 and rollers 15 adopt a substantially vertical discharge position, as shown schematically in Figure 3. This then enables the composite wrapped package to be discharged from the apparatus by smooth slidable movement along the surfaces of the rollers 15, which minimise the risk of damage being done to the film wrapping.
- the composite package only covers the outer surfaces of bales 16 and the end faces 24, and no wrapping is applied around the mating faces 18, and this therefore achieves substantial economies of film usage.
- the rollers 15 will be made of sufficient length in order to allow two bales to be loaded thereon in end to end relationship, and the support 19 for the reel 20 will be positioned at a suitable spacing from the bales, and the relative speeds of rotation of the bales 16 about
- the reel 20 forms part of a pre-stretcher assembly, preferably of the type disclosed in more detail in EP 0291483.
- a film gathering, clamping and cutting arrangement is provided along the path of travel from reel 20 to the bale 16, and which can be operated, manually, automatically or semi-automatically, in order to gather the film during tipping of the table 14 to the discharge position, and clamp the gathered film web and then cut it, prior to discharge of the wrapped package.
- a holding device which can engage what will be the upper end of the package during tilting, in order to retain the composite package against the rollers 15 during tilting.
- This holding device comprises a support 25a
- Holding device 26 will be located outside the path of travel of the film web during wrapping, but will be pivoted about pivot 27 under the action of a ram 28 during tipping of the tilting frame 21, so as to hold upper end 29 of the composite wrapped bale package 30, as shown in Figure 3. This enables the composite package 30 to slide smoothly downwardly along the length of rollers 15 until bottom end 31 comes smoothly into engagement with the ground surface 32.
- a smooth holding arrangement is provided at the end of table 14 remote from holding device 26, and which engages bottom end 31 of the package 30 while tipping of the table takes place so that the package remains on the table until it reaches a vertical or near vertical position when it can then slide smoothly onto the ground.
- the holding device 26 can then be released, and the tilting frame 21, table 14 and rollers 15 then return to the substantially horizontal receiving position ready for a second batch of two bales to be loaded thereon.
- tipping movement of the frame 21 is in a plane which is substantially parallel to the longitudinal axes of the rollers 15, and this enables smooth slidable discharge of the composite bale wrapped assembly to take place.
- apparatus is designated generally by reference 110 and will first be described in connection with the application of stretchable plastics film wrapping around a single
- bale 111 may be of other cross section, such as rectangular cross section.
- the turntable 112 is a rotating turntable which can be driven to rotate about upright axis 123 by any suitable drive rotation, this rotation being at substantially constant speed of revolution.
- the rollers 113 serve to rotate the bale 111 about its longitudinal axis 114, which will be a substantially
- a support 115 is mounted on a fixed part of the
- apparatus and carries a reel 116 of stretchable plastics film which can be withdrawn from the reel 116 in order to apply overlapping helical windings to cover the cylindrical outer surface 111a, and also the opposed circular planar end faces 117 of the bale 111.
- bale 112 The rotation of bale 112 about axis 123 enables the film to be withdrawn from the reel 116, and simultaneous rotation applied to bale 111 by at least one of the rollers 113 about axis 114 enables overlapping windings to be applied around the bale 111.
- drive means (not shown) is coupled with at least one of the rollers 113 and is operative to effect step-wise angular advance of the bale 111 about its axis 114, this drive means providing a respective dwell period of non-rotation of the roller each time the relative position taken-up by the reel 116 and the table 112 is such as to permit application of the film across each one of the end faces 117 of the bale 111.
- the width of the film employed will be wider than normal, whereby the "pitch" between successive helical windings applied around the cylindrical outer surface 111a of the bale 111 can be increased. Therefore, a pitch equivalent to that normally obtainable with a film of width 1 meter can be obtained, suitable for a 50% overlap between successive windings, by employing a drive means as specified, while only employing film 50 cm wide.
- bale wrapping pattern can be obtained with a 1 meter width film, which would be comparable to that obtained with a 2 meter wide film (not presently used) by adopting existing designs of bale wrapper apparatus.
- the preferred development of the invention shown in Figure 4 when applied to twin bale wrapping to form a composite package, arranges for the driven rotation of the pair of bales about their common axis to be deliberately arrested while the opposed outer planar end faces of the twin bales are being covered, whereas the bales are driven during the time in which the film is being applied around the outer cylindrical surfaces of the two bales i.e. the two
- the drive means is not shown in detail, but may take any suitable form, provided that it is arranged to operate, in timed sequence with the rotation of the table 112 about upright axis 123, in order to achieve the desired objectives, namely stepwise angular advance of the twin bales about the common axis, and a deliberate dwell period while the film is being withdrawn from the reel 116 and applied across the opposed planar outer end faces of the twin bale assembly.
