Definitions

  • This invention relates to a pipe repair device, and more particularly to such a device for quick and efficient repair of pipes carrying fluid under pressure and containing small holes, splits and the like.
  • a pipe repair device comprising a casing for location over the pipe, said casing including an outer wall spaced from and surrounding an extent of the pipe containing an area to be repaired, the axially-opposed ends of said casing terminating at or adjacent the surface of the pipe, one to each side of said area to be repaired, and an inflatable seal of a flexible material for location in the casing over the area of pipe to be repaired, the arrangement being such that, on inflation of the seal to a pressure at or exceeding that in the bore of the pipe, the seal expands to react between the outer wall of the casing and the surface of said extent of the pipe thereby to seal against the area of the pipe to be repaired.
  • the flexibility of the seal is such that it can readily accommodate any ovality or other deformities in the pipe whilst still effecting and maintaining a total seal with the area of the pipe to be repaired.

  • the side extents of the seal each comprise an outwardly tapering block of material such as rubber or plastics, the casing including opposed end walls axially spaced from one another and extending from opposed end regions of the outer wall to positions at or adjacent the surface of the pipe, said side walls being of a shape to correspond with, and to receive therein, said side extents of the seal.
  • the casing may comprise a single unit of generally annular shape, it is preferred that said casing comprises two or more portions releasably interconnected within one another, for example two portions each of substantially semi-circular cross- section the adjacent edges of which are hingedly connected to one another by pins received therein and extending axially thereof.
