Definitions
- This invention relates to a pipe repair device, and more particularly to such a device for quick and efficient repair of pipes carrying fluid under pressure and containing small holes, splits and the like.
- a pipe repair device comprising a casing for location over the pipe, said casing including an outer wall spaced from and surrounding an extent of the pipe containing an area to be repaired, the axially-opposed ends of said casing terminating at or adjacent the surface of the pipe, one to each side of said area to be repaired, and an inflatable seal of a flexible material for location in the casing over the area of pipe to be repaired, the arrangement being such that, on inflation of the seal to a pressure at or exceeding that in the bore of the pipe, the seal expands to react between the outer wall of the casing and the surface of said extent of the pipe thereby to seal against the area of the pipe to be repaired.
- the flexibility of the seal is such that it can readily accommodate any ovality or other deformities in the pipe whilst still effecting and maintaining a total seal with the area of the pipe to be repaired.
- the seal comprises a substantially rectangular bag the length of which is substantially equal to the circumference of the pipe to be repaired and the width of which is substantially equal to the axial extent of the casing, the bag being adapted to be wrapped around, to encompass, the extent of the pipe containing the area to be repaired.
- the opposed ends of the seal each comprise a block of material such as rubber or plastics extending transversely of the seal and arranged to overlap one another on location of the seal around the pipe, the combined depths of said blocks being substantially equal to the distance between the outer wall of the casing and the surface of the pipe.
- the side extents of the seal each comprise an outwardly tapering block of material such as rubber or plastics, the casing including opposed end walls axially spaced from one another and extending from opposed end regions of the outer wall to positions at or adjacent the surface of the pipe, said side walls being of a shape to correspond with, and to receive therein, said side extents of the seal.
- the casing may comprise a single unit of generally annular shape, it is preferred that said casing comprises two or more portions releasably interconnected within one another, for example two portions each of substantially semi-circular cross- section the adjacent edges of which are hingedly connected to one another by pins received therein and extending axially thereof.
- Fig. 1 is a front view, partly in vertical longitudinal section, of a device according to the invention
- Fig. 2 is an end view of the device of Fig. 1;
- Fig. 3 is a detail of the device of Fig. 1;
- Fig. 4 is a plan view of the seal of the device of Fig. 1, and
- Figs. 5 and 6 are sections on the lines V.-V and VT-V ⁇ respectively of Fig. 4. DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF PREFERRED EMBODIMENT
- the pipe to be repaired is shown at 2, the repair device comprising a metal casing of substantially hollow cylindrical shape indicated generally at 4 surrounding the pipe 2 and in which is located an inflatable seal indicated generally at 6.
- the casing 4 includes opposed halves 8,10 each of semi-circular shape in transverse section and each including a semi-cylindrical wall 12 spaced from, and coaxial with, the pipe 2.
- Each casing half 8,10 further includes opposed end walls 14,16 extending from the ends of the wall 12 and tapering towards the pipe 2 to terminate at or adjacent the outer surface of said pipe 2.
- the two halves 8,10 of the casing 4 are interconnected with one another by means of a pair of diametrically-opposed pins 18 extending through associated aligned sleeves 20 welded on the casing halves 8,10, said pins 18/sleeves 20 arrangements each providing hinges such that, on removal of one pin 18 from its associated sleeves 20, the casing halves 8,10 can pivot about the other pin 18.
- the seal 6 comprises a generally rectangular bag of flexible material such as a polymer compatible with the fluid being transported by the pipe 2, the length of the bag being substantially equal to the circumference of the pipe 2, and the width of the bag being substantially equal to the axial extent of the casing 4.
- the side edges of the bag comprise solid polymer blocks 22 of tapered configurations conforming with the shapes of the edge regions within the casing 4 defined by the tapered, end walls 14,16.
- the end edges of the bag comprise solid polymer blocks 24 so arranged that, on wrapping of the seal 6 around the pipe 2 within the casing 4, the blocks 24 overlap one another substantially to fill the space between the walls 12 of the casing 4 and the pipe 2.
- An inflation nozzle 26 is vulcanised into one of the blocks 22 to project therethrough into the interior of the bag whereby a source of fluid under pressure, for example oil, grease or air, can be attached to the nozzle to inflate the seal 6.
- a source of fluid under pressure for example oil, grease or air
- the device described above is used to seal a small hole, tear or the like in a pipe such as the pipe 2 carrying fluid under pressure.
- one half of the casing 4, with the deflated seal 6 therein, is located on the pipe to be repaired with a central region of the seal 6 over the area of the pipe to be repaired.
- the seal is wrapped round the pipe with the blocks 24 overlapping one another, the other half of the casing 4 is located in position around the pipe 2 and seal 6, and the pins 18 are positioned in the sleeves 20 to hold the casing 4 loosely on the pipe 2.
- a slot is formed in an end wall 16 of the casing 4 to accommodate the nozzle 26.
- the source of fluid under pressure is attached to the nozzle 26, and fluid is pumped into the interior of the ;seal 6 thereby to inflate the seal to a pressure in excess of that of the fluid in the pipe 2.
- Expansion of the inflated seal 6 is confined by the walls 12,14,16 of the casing 4, whereby said inflated seal 6 makes pressurised engagement with the surface of the pipe 2 to seal the area of said pipe in need of repair.
- the side blocks 22 of the seal 6 locate in, to be confined by, the tapered end walls 14,16 of the casing 4 such that said side blocks 22 effectively exert clamping forces around the pipe 2 to each side of the area under repair.
- the dynamic nature of the seal 6 is such that it is capable of accommodating any ovality or other deformities in the pipe 2 whilst still maintaining a complete seal over the area of the pipe 2 to be repaired.
- the material of the pipe 2 to be repaired may be of metal or plastics, while the seal 6 may be of any suitable elastomer material dependant upon the fluid carried by the pipe 2.
- the casing 4 may comprise a single, generally annular component or may comprise three or more portions selectively connectable to one another to surround the pipe 2.
- the wall 12 may be continuous or apertured, while the walls 14,16 may be other than linear tapering, for example arcuate, with the blocks 22 shaped correspondingly.
- the seal 6 may extend part way only around the pipe 2 providing it covers the area to be repaired, although it is preferred that the seal extends at least 180° around the pipe 2.
- the seal is preferably inflated using a liquid such as grease or oil.
- a repair device for a pipe which totally eliminates the requirements for nuts and bolts to effect the desired seal with the pipe, the dynamic nature of the seal itself within the associated casing serving to create and maintain the necessary pressurised engagement with the pipe.
- the flexibility of the inflated seal is also such as to make it suitable for sealing non-circular, distorted and/or pitted pipes without risk of leakage as would occur with established arrangements.
