Definitions
- the present invention relates to a ball practising device and relates particularly, though not exclusively, to a golf practising device.
- a golf practising device comprising a golf ball, a cord secured to the golf ball and a flat ribbon secured to the other end of the cord.
- this device does not provide an accurate indication of the flight of the ball.
- the ball cannot spin freely and the ribbon interferes with the spin of the ball.
- the ribbon must be stretched out lengthwise in front of the ball before hitting, which increases set up time.
- This device is also not suitable for hitting in a residential allotment as the ball still travels a substantial distance.
- a further object of the invention is to allow the golf ball to spin freely to allow a better indication of the flight of the ball.
- a ball practising device including a ball, a cord attached to said ball and a chute or frame member attached at the other end of said cord.
- said ball is a golf ball and said chute or frame and/or said golf ball is swivelly or rotatably connected to said cord.
- a chute is provided which includes a weight in the centre thereof.
- said golf ball has a centrally located bore through which is passed a loop and said loop is attached to said cord.
- a frame member is provided and is polygonal in shape, preferably triangular.
- Fig. 1 is a perspective of a first embodiment of a golf practising device; made in accordance with the invention;
- Fig. 2 is perspective view of the chute of the golf practising device shown in Fig. 1 with the chute in the collapsed position;
- Fig. 3 is a cross-sectional view along and in the direction of arrows 3-3 of Fig. 1 ;
- Fig. 4 is a perspective view of a second embodiment of a golf practising device
- Fig. 5 is a perspective view of an alternate link for use with the golf practising device of Figs. 1 to 4;
- Fig. 6 is a perspective view of a golfer using the golf practising device of Fig. 4. Description of the Preferred Embodiments
- a golf practising device 10 having a golf ball 12 with a bore 14 therethrough.
- the bore 14 may, if required, have a hollow sleeve 15 located therein.
- the sleeve 15 could be made from a plastics material and serve as a bearing for a loop 16.
- a swivel 18 has one end 20 attached to loop 16 and the other end 22 is attached to a cord 24.
- Cord 24 can be of any suitable length but a preferred length is 5.48 m (18 feet).
- cord 24 is attached to one end 26 of a further swivel 28.
- the other end 30 of swivel 28 is attached to strings 32 of a chute 34 through optional cord 35.
- a rectangular frame 36 has strings 32 secured thereto.
- Frame 36 has a pyramidal chute material 38 attached thereto.
- a weight 40 may be fitted at the apex of chute 34. Weight 40 will ensure that the chute 34 will always open.
- Chute 34 is located to the side or in front of the ball in the hitting direction.
- the chute 34 does not require cord 24 to be fully extended. Chute 34 will be in the collapsed position as shown in Fig. 2. Golf ball 12 is then hit with a golf club (not shown).
- the swivels 18,28 allow golf ball 12 to spin freely and provide a true flight indication. Golf ball 12 will maintain its flight pattern until cord 24 is fully extended causing chute 34 to open.
- Chute 34 will act as a drag chute and cause rapid deceleration of golf ball 12. In practice it has been found that golf ball 12 will only travel 2 Vi times the length of cord 24 for a full blooded drive.
- the device 10 will allow any golf shot to be struck within the confines of a backyard of a typical home without damage to property or requiring a safety net.
- FIG. 4 In the embodiment shown in Fig. 4 similar integers have been referenced with the same numerals in order to avoid repetition of description.
- This embodiment replaces chute 34 with a polygonal frame 42, in this instance a triangular frame.
- frame 42 is formed of metal rod and is shaped as an equilateral triangle.
- the length of each side in a practical embodiment, is 45cm and formed from 9mm round steel rod.
- a fabric cover (not shown) may be secured to frame 42. If the fabric cover is used, attachment cord 35 must be anchored to the corner to prevent damage to the cover. If the cover is not used, attachment cord 35 can be free to move along frame 42.
- frame 42 In use, frame 42 is placed at any position with the apex of frame 42 pointing towards ball 12. For maximum flight indication cord 24 is extended to its full length. Golf ball 12 is then struck as shown in Fig. 6. If struck properly the frame 42 will just flip over. If not struck properly cord 35 will travel to one corner of frame 42 without flipping over.
- the weight of frame 42 is selected to ensure very limited movement along the ground when the ball 12 is decelerated when cord 24 is pulled taut by the struck ball. This embodiment will have less ball travel than the embodiment of Figs. 1 to 3 and is ideally suited for clubs from a 5-iron to wedges.
- Fig. 4 includes a variation which provides a very strong device and can be used with any club.
- Frame 42 may include an optional brace member 48 which acts as an additional weight.
- Swivel 28 and cord 35 can be omitted and a direct connection to cord 24 made.
- Cord 24 has a loop 50 which engages frame 42.
- Loop 50 can be formed by splicing a braided rope, welded or clamped by a crimp. To prevent cord 24 from fraying a plastics sleeve (not shown) can enclose a part of loop 50.
- a further loop 54 is provided at the other end which links loop 16.
- loop 16 is linked through a joiner 56.
- joiner 56 is optional but it makes it easier to replace ball 12 when required.
- a threaded sleeve 58 threadably engages joiner 56 to allow easy disassembly. This embodiment allows speedy replacement of battered balls. Loop 16 will rotate on joiner 58 and will not be subject to localised wear.
- chute 34 can be varied in size and shape.
- a circular chute may for example, be provided.
- Frame 36 can be omitted and strings 32 attached to the periphery of chute 34.
- Cord 24, loop 16 and strings 32 can be formed of any suitable material e.g. wire reinforced cord, plastics twine, plaited plastics rope, cable, rope, etc.
- Swivels 18,28 may be fishing tackle swivels or other readily available devices.
- Joiner 56 may be substituted by other device, for example, shackles, U-bolts with a threaded locking pin, loops or similar devices.
- Loop 50 (Fig. 4) may also be replaced by a joiner 50 or similar to further assist in easy replacement of worn components.
- Bore 14 may be omitted by direct connection to swivel 18 or by having loop 16 pass through a small bore or a handle on golf ball 12.
- Cord 24 can be of any length. The longer the length of cord 24 the better the flight pattern will be shown. If desired a kit could be supplied which included chute 34 and frame 42. The chute 34 could be used for woods and irons up to a 4-iron and the frame 42 used for all clubs.
