Definitions

  • This invention concerns a radio access communications system for the fixed subscriber loop to provide access for a set of subscriber terminals to a fixed telephone network, this communications system being particularly applicable for those access systems to a fixed telephone network where the structural costs, coverage or topology make it unfeasible to employ wired networks.
  • BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION At present, the use of radio communications systems in the subscriber loop is one of the topics of greatest interest for both the service providers and the manufacturers of equipments developed for this purpose.
  • the ternational tandardization and normalization bodies are plaving a major role in the analysis and examination oi the possible technologies to be applied to this field as alternatives to the physical transmission or access networks associated with a fixed telephone network.
  • the reference model for this local loop radio communications system makes use of a base station controller device that connects the local loop radio communications system with the fixed telephone network, a set of base stations with radio devices for transmitting and receiving information in the voice band, and signalling from and towards the subscriber terminals and a series of radio terminating elements that permit access to the radio interface of a number of subscriber terminals to which these radio terminating elements are each physically connected.
  • the radio access communications system for fixed subscriber terminals to a fixed telephone network presents problems of incompatibility between the two for full integration of this radio access system, acting to all intents as an extension of the fixed telephone network, when this radio access communication system has to interconnect and interoperate with the fixed telephone network.

  • the base station controller which controls a set of base stations which establish the radio links with the subscriber terminal adapters; this radio access communications system for the fixed subscriber loop being of particular application in those access systems where, for reasons of high cost, coverage requirements or topology, a wired network access system is not feasible.
