Definitions
- the present invention relates to a stapler for driving staples into an object, such as a sheaf of papers, said stapler comprising a driving element, which is arranged to eject a substantially U-shaped staple and drive the legs thereof through the object, and a clinching mechanism having two parallel wall elements, which form between themselves a gap for receiving the staple legs driven through the object and each have a guiding surface for guiding the end of each leg into the gap, and two anvil elements, which are arranged in the gap and which are each pivotable about an axis essen ⁇ tially perpendicular to the wall elements, the anvil elements being pivotable between a starting position, m which they are arranged such that the free ends of the staple legs, when driving the staple into the object, will come into abutment against the respective anvil elements, and an end position for bending, when pivoting from the starting position to the end position, the pro ⁇ jecting end portions of the legs driven through the object, against the object and towards each other.
- a stapler of this type is disclosed in EP 0,322,906.
- the clinching mechanism is de ⁇ signed so as to let the staple legs overlap in the clinching operation, when the parts, which project from the object, of the staple legs driven through the object have a total length which is greater than the length of the staple web.
- the pivotable anvil elements are juxtaposed in the gap so as to bend the staple legs m two parallel planes.
- the anvil elements are each ar- ranged adjacent to a wall element, and each wall element has a guiding surface for guiding the end of the respec ⁇ tive staple legs toward the closest anvil element.
- each anvil element has a guiding surface on one side only, which involves a risk that the leg will not be bent when, m leaving the object, the end of the leg is po- sitioned on the side of the anvil element, which is oppo ⁇ site to the guiding surface, and thus does not hit the anvil element, which for the one anvil element may occur especially when the object is thin, and for the other anvil element especially when the object is thick.
- the projection on which the sup ⁇ plementary guiding surface of the anvil element is ar ⁇ ranged constitutes a terminal confinement for that part of the gap, in which the staple leg, which is bent by the other anvil element, is being bent.
- This leg therefore must have a limited length to be accommodated in this part of the gap when the object, through which the staple is driven, is thin and the length of the leg part pro- truding therefrom thus constitutes a great part of the total length of the leg.
- the object of the present invention therefore is to provide a stapler, whose clinching mechanism is so de ⁇ signed that the above-described problem of guiding the legs is solved without limitation of the length of the gap.
- this object is achieved by means of a stapler, which is of the type described by way of introduction and which is characterised in that an intermediate element, which is parallel to the wall ele ⁇ ments, is arranged in the gap for dividing this into two juxtaposed partial gaps, each anvil element being ar- ranged in a partial gap, and that the intermediate ele ⁇ ment has a guiding surface cooperating with the guiding surface of the one wall element and adapted to guide the end of one leg into the one partial gap, and a guiding surface cooperating with the guiding surface of the other wall element and adapted to guide the end of the other leg into the other partial gap.
- Each pair of cooperating guiding surfaces preferably consists of inclined surfaces which are positioned just in front of each other.
- the anvil elements are suitably pivotally mounted on the intermediate element on both sides thereof.
- FIG. 1 is a perspective view and illustrates a broken-away front portion of a stapler according to the present invention
- Fig. 2 is an exploded view of the parts included in the clinching mechanism of the stapler
- Fig. 3 is a top plan view of the clinching mecha ⁇ nism
- Figs 4 and 5 illustrate the function of the clinch ⁇ ing mechanism when fastening a thin sheaf of papers to ⁇ gether
- Figs 6 and 7 illustrate the function of the clinch ⁇ ing mechanism when fastening a thicker sheaf of papers together
- Figs 8 and 9 illustrate the appearance of the staple after the clinching operation when fastening respectively a thin and a thicker sheaf of papers together.
- the drawings illustrate merely those parts of an in ⁇ ventive stapler which are essential to the invention.
- the illustrated stapler which is especially intended for fastening sheets of paper together in a sheaf 1 (Figs 4- 7), comprises a base 2 and a driving element 3, which is adapted to eject a U-shaped staple 4 from a magazine (not shown) and drive the legs 4a and 4b of the staple 4 through the sneaf of papers 1.
- the base 2 of wnich only a front portion is shown in Figs 1-3, has two fixing lugs 5 with screw holes 6.
- the base 2 further comprises two forwardly projecting upper projections 7 and two forwardly projecting lower projections 8.
- the stapler also comprises a clinching mechanism 9.
- the clinching mechanism 9 comprises a top piece 10, which in cross-section essentially has the shape of an inverted U.
- the legs of the top piece 10 form vertical wall ele ⁇ ments 10a and 10b, which are parallel and between them ⁇ selves form a gap 11.
- the web 10c of the top piece 10 has in its central portion a staple opening 12, which com- municates with the gap 11.
- the two wall elements 10a and 10b each have a laterally projecting mounting flange 13a, 13b.
- the wall elements 10a and 10b each have an inclined surface 14a, 14b.
- the inclined surfaces 14a and 14b are formed in the upper edge portion of the wall elements so as to guide, when required, the staple leg 4a, 4b into the gap
- the centre distance between the inclined surfaces 14a and 14b equals the distance between the staple legs 4a and 4b.
- the top piece 10 is arranged on a substantially plate-shaped bottom piece 15, which forms a partition wall parallel with the wall elements 10a and 10b of the top piece 10, in the gap 11 and divides this into two juxtaposed partial gaps 11a and lib (Fig. 3) .
- the bottom piece 15 has, in the vicinity of its upper edge portion, two pins 17, which project perpen ⁇ dicularly in opposite directions and which are formed of corresponding depressions 18 at the associated opposite side of the bottom piece 15.
- the pins 17 are circular in cross-section, and their length equals the width of the respective partial gaps 11a, lib.
- the pins 17 constitute pivots for two anvil elements 19a, 19b, which are each arranged in a partial gap 11a, lib.
- the bottom piece 15 is double-bent along its two lateral edge portions and has, in consequence of the bending, a projecting lateral flange 20 on each side.
- the lateral flanges 20 are positioned on both sides of the major plane of the bottom piece 15 (see Fig. 3) .
- a through recess 21 is formed in each of the two bending areas.
- the clinching mechanism 9 is attached to the base 2 by means of screws 22, which extend through the recesses 21 in the bottom piece 15 and are fastened in the holes 6 in the fixing lugs 5 of the base 2.
- the lateral flanges 20 of the bottom piece 15 abut against the fixing lugs 5 and are arranged each between one of the two pairs of upper and lower projections 7, 8 of the base 2.
- the top piece 10 is kept in place by its one mounting flange 13a engaging under one upper projection 7 of the base 2 and its other mounting flange 13b being inserted into one of the recesses 21 of the bottom piece 15 (see Fig. 1) .
- the anvil elements 19a and 19b are pivotable about the pivot pins 17 between a starting position (Figs 1, 4 and 6) , in which they are arranged in such a manner that the free leg ends of the staple 4, when driving the staple into the sheaf of papers 1, will come into abut ⁇ ment against the respective anvil elements 19a, 19b, and an end position (Figs 5 and 7) for bending, when pivoting from the starting position to the end position, the pro ⁇ jecting parts of the legs 4a and 4b driven through the sheaf of papers 1, against the lower side of the sheaf of papers 1 (Figs 5 and 7) towards each other.
- the two anvil elements 19a and 19b are pivoted by means of an actuating element (not shown) , which extends into an opening 23 formed in the bottom piece 15 and is vertically displace- able in this opening.
- the driving element 3 drives the staple legs 4a and 4b through the sheaf of papers 1, the ends of the legs strike against the anvil elements 19a and 19b, thereby being bent inwards, as shown in Fig. 4 for a thin sheaf of papers 1, and n Fig. 6 for a thicker sheaf of papers 1.
- the staple 4 is shown completely driven-m in Figs 4 and 6.
- the actuat ⁇ ing element pivots the anvil elements 19a and 19b from the starting position to the end position, such that the staple legs 4a and 4b are bent into abutment against the lower side of the sheaf of papers 1 (Figs 5 and 7) , i.e. are clinched against this.
- the legs 4a and 4b extend in parallel with and at some distance from each other, said distance being determined by the thickness of the bottom piece 15.
- the appearance of the staple 4 in the clinched position s shown (with ⁇ out the sheaf of papers 1) in Fig. 8 for a thin sheaf of papers and in Fig. 9 for a thicker sheaf of papers.
