Abstract

An input device for use with a computer, and methods of use, are provided which enable a user to specify the motion of a cursor on a computer display, and to specify a variety of parameters, including binary parameters and a continuous two-dimensional parameter. In a first embodiment, a strain-sensitive two-axis control stick (26), used for specifying the continuous two-dimensional parameter, is disposed on a lateral surface of a 'mouse'-style pointing device (20). A rolling ball (25) mechanism is used to detect the motion of the device, which determines the motion of the cursor (2). Push-buttons (22, 24) disposed on a top surface of the device are used to specify binary parameters and activation of commands or actions.
