  • the present invention relates in general to processor based devices operable while being held in its user's hand, such as a grip-held computer and a handheld scanner. More particularly, the present invention pertains to the structure of such handheld devices allowing for single-hand holding and operation. More specifically, the present invention relates to structure for such handheld devices that allows, key-based data entry, single hand point-and-shoot scanning, larger displays and carrying in a holster.

  • Main body portion 11 has two ends 21, 22 and two sides 17, 18. (Side 18 is viewable only in Fig. 4.) Main body portion 11 carries a display 15 on its top surface 19 which is covered by lid portion 12 when the latter is folded over display 15. Bar code scanner 13 is carried by the main body portion 11 at the end 22. Trigger switches 16A, 16B are provided on side 17 so that as device 10 is held in either hand, the index finger of that hand is positioned over one of the buttons 16A, 16B while the thumb rests against the opposite side 18. Lid portion 12 is movably mounted to main body portion 1 1 on side 18 via a hinge 14 in the. manner of a clam-shell such as those used in palm-top computers described above. A keyboard 23 is carried by lid portion 12 such that it faces the user when the lid portion 12 is in the open position.
  • Device 10 can be operated single-handedly for portable data collection via bar code scanning. Lid portion 12 may be closed and device 10 put away in a holster when not in use. At the same time, there is eno ⁇ gh real estate on front surface 19 for a large display and keyboard.

Abstract

L'invention concerne un dispositif (10) portatif d'entrée de données et de calcul, que l'on peut tenir et faire fonctionner d'une seule main. Ledit dispositif comprend un boîtier présentant un corps principal (11), que l'on peut prendre facilement d'une main, un couvercle (12) et un lecteur (13).
