Definitions

  • the present invention relates to a method of sealing pipes, and other substrates.
  • it relates to a method of sealing a joint between two pipes using an improved pipe coupler.
  • WO92/05674 discloses an electrically-heated tape comprising a conductive polymer.
  • WO93/08013 shows a heat-recoverable article for use on pipe joints.
  • the article is a sleeve containing heat-recoverable fabric.
  • Conductive fibres may be incorporated into the fabric to enable it to be heated to recover the fabric.
  • EP-A-0158519 discloses a heat-recoverable article using a heat-recoverable fabric with heat-recoverable polyethylene filaments in the warp and glass fibre yarn in the weft. A resistance heating wire is interleaved with the fibres in the weft of the fabric. The fabric is coated with mastic.
  • Such rigid joints may be obtained by forming a coupler by wrapping a layer of pre- polymer one or more times about the joint between two pipes and then heating the pre- polymer to convert it to a thermoset polymer.
  • the heat required to convert the pre-polymer to thermoset polymer may be supplied by applying a source of heat to the outside of the wrapped pipe.
  • a source of heat to the outside of the wrapped pipe.
  • the layer or layers of pre-polymer will be relatively thick. It is thus difficult to ensure uniform heating of the pre-polymer.
  • a substrate such as a joint between the ends of two pipes, which method comprises:
  • the pre-polymer layer is in contact (directly or indirectly) with conductive fibres (preferably carbon fibres and optionally also glass fibres as reinforcement, and preferably in the form of a fabric), and the pre-polymer is heated to cure it by causing electrical current to flow through the conductive fibres.
  • conductive fibres preferably carbon fibres and optionally also glass fibres as reinforcement, and preferably in the form of a fabric
  • the conductive fibres are preferably embedded in the pre-polymer. Heating is preferably carried out whilst the layer is pressed in contact with the substrate, preferably by means of an external pressurization device (rather than say by incorporating heat- shrinkable material into the layer).
  • a preferred pressurization device is a bladder or other device operated pneumatically.
  • the present invention is particularly suitable for joining GRP (glass reinforced polyester or other plastic) pipes.
  • the pre-polymer is preferably a high performance thermoplastic resin, (usually together with an appropriate curing agent) and particularly one which has low brittleness.
  • a suitable resin is one comprising the adhesive composition disclosed in US 5470622, the disclosure of which is incorporated herein by reference. That adhesive composition has low brittleness, but satisfactory stiffness and chemical resistance. Many other attempts to reduce brittleness have resulted in resins of poor stiffness and poor chemical resistance.
  • the adhesive composition of US 5470622 comprises a blend of (1) about 10 to about 75 parts by weight of an essentially amorphous thermoplastic resin selected from the group consisting of polysulphones, polyethersulphones, polystyrene, polyphenylene oxide, amorphous polyamides, phenoxy resins, amorphous polyimides, polyetherimides, polyetherimide/silicone block copolymers, polyurethanes, amorphous polyesters, polycarbonates, and acrylic resins such as polymethyl methacrylate, styrene/acrylonitrile and styrene block copolymers, (2) about 90 to about 25 parts by weight of an uncured thermosetting resin, and (3) a curing agent if necessary.
  • an adhesive composition can remain substantially uncured for at least about one year at 25 °C.
  • thermoplastic resin is used in the adhesive to provide an overall adhesive composition that is strong, tough and leathery at room temperature in the uncured state.
  • the thermoplastic resin is generally present in an amount from about 10 parts to about 75 parts, preferably from about 15 parts to about 60 parts, and particularly from about 25 parts to about 45 parts (all parts herein are by weight). Any of a wide range of thermoplastic resins may be utilized as components of the adhesive composition of the present invention.
  • the preferred class of thermoplastic resins may be defined as amorphous thermoplastic resins, that is resins which are essentially amorphous (as defined in Saechtling International Plastics Handbook for the Technologist, Engineer and User, Second Edition, 1987, Hanser Publishers, Kunststoff, at page 1, incorporated herein by reference).
  • the term "essentially amorphous" as used herein means that the resin is at most about 25% crystalline, preferably at most about 20% crystalline, particularly at most about 15% crystalline, and especially at most about 5% crystalline. A mixture of resins may be used if desired.
  • the thermoplastic resin is of high molecular weight and may be rigid or rubbery at room temperature.
