Definitions
- This invention relates to a collar for use in closing a metal can.
- a can fitted with such a collar to enable it to be closed by a screw or twist-off style of closure.
- Attempts have been made to provide a closure for a metal can which provides an hermetic seal prior to opening and which is subsequently resealable for storing any remaining contents.
- Carbonated beverages, for example exert a high internal pressure which the closure must be able to withstand without loss of sealing. If the product requires in-can pasteurisation, high internal pressures are also a problem.
- WO 97/11005 (The Coca-Cola Company) have suggested one such assembly which comprises a can with a collar and a closure which engages with the collar for example by screw threads or lugs.
- the can has a flange which, together with the distal edge of the closure, is configured so that any increase in internal pressure will "increase" the hermetic seal between the closure and the can.
- a collar for a metal can comprising an inner wall including one or more venting channels extending from one end of the collar to the other.
- Venting is thus continuous and does not rely on thread breaks being aligned.
- the collar may further comprise castellations around one edge. Alternatively, or in addition, such castellation may be provided around one end of its inner wall.
- the outer wall of the collar usually includes threads or lugs for receiving a closure.
- the collar as described above, in combination with a can, the can comprising: a cylindrical side wall; a tapered shoulder; and a cylindrical neck; in which the collar extends around the cylindrical neck and is retained thereon by an outward curl at the free edge of the neck.
- the collar includes castellations, these are provided either around the end or the edge of the collar which is adjacent the free edge of the neck.
- the curl may have a radius of between 0.3 mm and 1.0 mm, preferably about 0.5 mm.
- the open end of the can may be between 20 and 80 mm in internal diameter, preferably between 38 to 65 mm.
- a container which comprises the above combination of collar and can, together with a closure, in which the closure includes either a gas impermeable liner which extends outside and is in contact with the container curl, or a bore seal.
- Figure 1 is a side view of a collar
- Figure 2 is a plan view of the collar of figure 1;
- Figure 3 is a section along III-III of figure 2;
- Figure 4 is a container fitted with the collar of figures 1 to 3;
- Figure 5 is the container of figure 4, partially opened
- FIG. 6 is enlarged section VI of figure 4.
- Figure 7 is a schematic side section of a container with a two piece metal cap
- Figure 8 is a schematic side section of a container with a 38 mm diameter one piece bore seal plastic cap
- Figure 9 is a schematic side section of a container with a 61 mm diameter one piece bore seal plastic cap.
- Figure 10 is a schematic side section of a container with a two piece plastic cap.
- Figures 1 to 3 show a collar 1 which comprises an inner and outer wall 3,4 respectively and upper and lower edges 5,6 respectively.
- Inner wall 3 is provided with 18 regularly spaced channels 7 which extend from one end of the collar to the other.
- Outer wall 4 includes a continuous two turn thread 8.
- the upper edge 5 of the collar is castellated, as shown by protrusions 9 in figures 1 and 3.
- Figure 4 is a side section through a container along the line C-C of figure 4a.
- the collar 1 of figures 1 to 3 is shown in position on a can body 10.
- the container of figure 4 comprises can body 10, collar 1 and closure 20.
- Closure 20 comprises a one piece plastic closure having a centre panel 21 strengthened by ribs 22 and a depending skirt 25. Spaced radially inwards from the skirt 25 is an annular wall 23 which forms a bore seal .
- skirt 25 At the lower edge of skirt 25 is a band 26 which provides evidence of tampering.
- the inside of skirt 25 is threaded and may also include an annular bead 28 for engagement with collar 1.
- the collar 1 is retained on the can body 10 by an outwardly turned curl 11 at the upper edge of the can, as shown in more detail in figure 6.
- the collar 1 is turned outwardly at its lower edge 6 so as to be mounted on the shoulder 12 of the can 10 and completely surrounds cylindrical neck 13. Passage of air through channels 7 (one shown in figure 4) is prevented by the cap 20 in the closed position shown in figure 4.
- the container of figure 4 is shown in the part- opened position, after one full turn of the closure, in figure 5. From this figure, it can be seen that the tamper evident band 26 has become detached from the skirt 25 of the cap 20 by unscrewing the cap from the collar 1.
- venting channels 7 not only assist in "anti- missiling” but also enable a stronger more rigid cap to be used, since the thread on both the cap and the collar may be continuous. Furthermore, in contrast with prior art designs, the venting is continuous. In previous caps, venting required a break in the thread, whether the thread be otherwise of the continuous type or more simple lugs. This venting was inevitably intermittent since the venting would only be possible when slots in the thread on the closure and bottle lined up.
- the castellations 9 prevent movement of the collar 1 due to changes in internal pressure.
- the collar When the can is pressurised, for example by pasteurisation processes or by carbonated beverages, the collar will tend to be forced upwardly off the can. This will apply pressure to the base of the curl 11 which risks opening the curl by rolling which will lead to loss of grip between the collar and the can and spinning of the collar when attempts are made to open the container.
- castellations 9 These will embed in the curl 11 under pressure, thus preventing further upwards movement of the collar and subsequent uncurling of the curl 11. This operation is further enhanced by a very tight fully closed up curl 11, typically having a radius of about 0.5 mm.
- An aluminium can having a 0.5 mm complete curl was fitted with a threaded castellated collar.
- the seal diameter of the collar was 56.5 mm, i.e. suitable for a 61 mm diameter closure.
- the collar extended over the cylindrical neck and upper shoulder of the can body by a length of 12 mm.
- Tests were conducted to establish that the attached collar could withstand a 65 psi internal pressure such as might be generated by a carbonated beverage, and torsion as applied during closing and opening. Total failure occurred at 2500 N (140 psi) . Further samples were loaded to an internal pressure of 110 N (65 psi) and then subjected to torsion tests. Slip of the collar occurred at typically 17 lbins, 3 lbins in excess of an advised requirement of 14 lbins. Pulling up of the collar to simulate the effect of internal pressure during opening, resulted in an increase to 20 lbins.
- Figures 7 to 10 are schematics of alternative versions of caps which may be used for different products according to their barrier and pressure requirements.
- Figure 7 is a metal cap with a threaded plastic liner 14 for a 61 mm diameter can.
- a sealing compound 15 is provided between the cap and the curl 11 of the can.
