Abstract

The invention relates to an absorbent single use hygiene item, comprising a liquid-tight back sheet (4), a liquid-permeable cover sheet (2), an absorbent body (6) containing super-absorbent polymer materials which is suitable for storing bodily fluids, especially urine, and which is located between said back sheet (4) and said cover sheet (2), and a two-layer intermediate part (8) which takes up and distributes liquid. Said intermediate part (8) is made up of a top layer (18) consisting of synthetic fibres and a bottom layer (20), the average pore volume of the top layer (18) being greater than the average pore volume of the bottom layer (20), and is arranged between the absorbent body (6) and the cover sheet (2). The inventive hygiene item is configured in such a way that the bottom layer (20) is made essentially exclusively of chemically cross-linked cellulose fibres and the top layer (18) overlaps the longitudinal ends (21) of the bottom layer with its longitudinal edge sections (19) so that the hygiene item is able to absorb more than one of loss of liquid and give the wearer a feeling of dryness. In the case of hygiene articles, in particular diapers or incontinence pads with SAP materials in the absorbent body, there is a risk of so-called gel blocking. The SAP materials swell in the area of the fluid accumulation, so that further fluid absorption is impeded, in particular after multiple fluid accumulations in the area in question. The intermediate layer provided between the cover sheet and the absorbent body should therefore be the impinging layer Absorb liquid as a kind of intermediate buffer, distribute it within the intermediate layer and drain it into the absorbent body. The chemical crosslinking of the cellulose molecules, which occurs within the cellulose fibers by crosslinking the cellulose molecules of a fiber and not between the fibers, ensures that the fibers are in a comparatively rigid, structurally elastic state. The intramolecular absorption capacity of the fibers is reduced. Such fibers are better suited than the chemically non-crosslinked cellulose fibers of the absorbent body to also process repeated liquid gushes, i.e. quickly absorbed and passed on in and into the absorbent body. In the known hygiene article, the intermediate layer contains, in addition to the chemically crosslinked cellulose fibers, a thermoplastic binding material in the form of admixed thermoplastic fibers. The thermoplastic fibers are melted by heating the fiber mixture and thus fix the chemically crosslinked cellulose fibers together in an adhesive-like manner, which is shown to be particularly advantageous.

EP 0 397 110 AI describes a diaper in which the function of temporarily absorbing liquid is taken over by a voluminous nonwoven layer based on synthetic fibers, which in turn is used as Intermediate layer between the absorbent body and the cover sheet is arranged. In order to be able to fulfill the function of the intermediate storage and distribution of the resulting liquid in a satisfactory manner, this layer must have a basis weight of at least 60 g / m ² . Starting from the prior art described above, the present invention is based on the object of providing a hygiene article with a high proportion of super-absorbent polymer materials in the absorbent body, the storage capacity of which can be used even better and more completely than that of WO 91 / 11162 known hygiene products is the case. This object is achieved according to the invention in a hygiene article of the type mentioned at the outset by the features of the characterizing part of claim 1. It is proposed according to the invention to form the lower layer of the intermediate layer exclusively from chemically cross-linked cellulose fibers.

The positive effect of the two-layer intermediate layer constructed according to the invention results from a synergistic effect, which can be explained as follows: The gradient of the average pore volume (viewed in the direction perpendicular to the plane of the cover sheet in the direction of the absorbent body) achieves that for the the upper layer of the liquid striking the intermediate layer, initially a relatively large-pore liquid absorption volume is available and that the liquid can then reach the absorbent body via the lower layer of the intermediate layer. The lower hydrophilicity of the synthetic fibers of the upper layer of the intermediate layer compared to the chemically crosslinked cellulose fibers of the lower layer of the intermediate layer and, in turn, their preferably lower hydrophilicity compared to the non-crosslinked cellulose fibers of the absorbent support the desired direction of liquid transport. The lower layer of the intermediate layer, consisting of the chemically cross-linked cellulose fibers, has a certain liquid conductivity due to the capillary suction effect of the layered fibers, so that liquid that has reached the lower layer through the upper layer of the intermediate layer is distributed in its plane and thus partly also from the amount of liquid spaced areas arrives and can be discharged there into the suction body arranged below. Nevertheless, after repeated contact with liquid, the storage capacity of the absorbent body in the area in which the liquid strikes will be almost exhausted. At this critical moment for the functioning of the hygiene article, the lower layer of the intermediate storage layer can store the liquid that is to be added, at least to a limited extent. The storage capacity is on the one hand due to the molecular binding capacity of the crosslinked fibers and, secondly, achieved by the pore volume remaining between the fibers. The lower layer of the intermediate layer thus offers a kind of reserve storage capacity. The risk of the liquid stored there being pressed out onto the diaper surface, ie onto the skin of the user of the diaper, is therefore significantly reduced, since the upper, large-pore layer of the intermediate storage layer, which is equipped with an even lower hydrophilicity of the synthetic fibers, acts as a spacer. In the preferred case of very low hydrophilicity, the synthetic fibers of the upper layer of the intermediate layer offer hardly any possibility of molecularly binding liquid, so that this layer remains largely dry.

Because the upper layer of the intermediate layer overlaps the longitudinal ends of the lower layer of the intermediate layer with its longitudinal end sections, it can be reliably avoided that any liquid present in the lower layer of the intermediate layer can be pressed against the surface of the hygiene article.

It has also proven to be advantageous if the edges of the longitudinal end sections of the upper layer are still within, ie at a distance from, the longitudinal ends of the absorbent body. This makes better use of the storage capacity of the absorbent body: If, in the case of multiple liquid accumulation described above, the storage capacity of the absorbent body in the area of impact is exhausted and the lower layer of the intermediate storage layer already takes up its reserve storage function and further incident liquid at the boundary between the two layers of the intermediate storage layer or If it is transported in the lower region of the upper layer of the intermediate storage layer, the liquid can be safely introduced into the absorbent body when the longitudinal ends of the lower layer of the intermediate layer are reached are, it being assumed that the storage capacity of the absorbent body in this area has not yet been exhausted.

The above-mentioned liquid transport in the lower region of the upper layer of the intermediate layer can be made even more effective if, according to a preferred embodiment, the upper layer itself has a pore volume which decreases in the direction of liquid transport from the cover sheet to the absorbent body, that is to say perpendicular to the layer plane. The pore volume does not need to decrease discretely from a larger value to a smaller value, but can quasi continuously decrease from top to bottom within the upper layer of the intermediate layer.

The intermediate layer is preferably formed in such a way that the fibers of the upper layer of the intermediate layer engage in the lower layer of the intermediate layer and thus a transition zone is formed between the layers. In a corresponding manner, the fibers of the lower layer of the intermediate layer can engage in the absorbent body, so that a transition zone is likewise formed between the intermediate layer and the absorbent body.

The two-layer structure of the intermediate layer described above and the functioning of the lower layer of the intermediate layer make it possible to keep the weight per unit area of the upper layer of the intermediate layer low, preferably below 55 g / m ² . However, this opens up the possibility of equipping an endless roll of the material required for this with a running length that is satisfactorily long for the technical manufacturing process and of integrating the material into the high-speed production.

To form the upper layer of the intermediate layer, it is proposed to use a non-woven fabric compared to the Use voluminous nonwoven cover sheet. A number of known synthetic fiber types and methods for producing nonwovens are available to the person skilled in the art, so that this does not require any further description. Fiber strengths of the bicomponent fibers of at least 4 dtex, preferably from 5 to 8 dtex, have proven to be advantageous. This ensures that, even after thermal consolidation, the titer of the fibers is still large enough to give the nonwoven the desired large pore volume. Thick fibers cannot be packed as full-volume as thin fibers. Means for adjusting the hydrophilicity of synthetic fibers are also available to the person skilled in the art, which therefore require no explanation. Using such agents, the preferably very low hydrophilicity of the upper layer of the intermediate layer can be adjusted so that it is preferably very low in any case but less than that of the chemically crosslinked fibers of the lower layer of the intermediate layer. It has also proven useful to design the absorbent body arranged below the intermediate layer in two layers, the upper layer essentially containing cellulose fibers and superabsorbent polymer materials and the lower layer essentially exclusively containing cellulose fibers. This ensures optimal utilization of the suction capacity of the absorbent body.
