Abstract

A piston and connecting rod assembly for an internal combustion engine comprises a piston (12), a connecting rod (15), and a spring (13). The connecting rod (15) has a first end operatively associated with the piston (12) for movement therewith, and a second end connectible to a rotary output shaft. The spring (13) acts between the piston (12) and the connecting rod (15) to bias the connecting rod away from the crown of the piston. The assembly is such that the energy stored in the spring (13) as it is compressed by the expanding gases resulting from combustion during an ignition stroke is substantially equal to the energy returned to the spring during the subsequent power stroke.
