Definitions
- the present invention relates to a massaging apparatus which also functions as an exercise mat.
- the present invention pertains to a massaging apparatus for massaging the feet and at the same time allows the user to derive the benefit of exercise.
- any massage device can't replace the fingers of an expert masseur.
- Most massage devices including those specific for foot reflexology supply pressure on relevant accupressure points of one's anatomy. However, most devices apply either too much or too little pressure. If the pressure is excessive, the consumers experience pain and tend not to follow through with a proper massage routine. If the pressure is too little or the accupressure points are missed, the efficacy of massage is diminished.
- the present invention is a massage stand having spaced, spring loaded pins on a graduated platform of posts which are contoured to the bottom surface of one's feet and to simulate foot reflexology pressure on the bottom of the user's feet when one stands upright on top of the massage stand.
- the layout of spaced pins covers essentially all the accupressure points of the bottom of one's feet.
- the massage stand also incorporates magnets on selected pins so that they enhance blood circulation of the user. As the pins are spring loaded, the user is encouraged to lift one's leg without feeling unevenness of pressure on one's feet. As such, the user derives not only benefits of foot reflexology but also enhanced cardiovascular activity with the same device. Because the footprint and size of the present invention is compact, the user can have a foot massage and exercise in the privacy and comfort of one's office or home.

- Fig. 5 is a left side, front, perspective and elevational view of the platform of the embodiment of the present invention showing all the spring loaded pins being fitted therein.
- Fig. 6A is a cross section, plan and elevational view of the embodiment of the present invention according to section E-E in Fig. 2.
- Fig. 6B is a cross section, right side and elevational view of the embodiment of the present invention according to section F-F in Fig. 2.
- Fig. 1 is a front, top, perspective and elevational view of an embodiment of the present invention.
- the present invention is a massage apparatus 10 and comprises a cover 12, a base 16, and a plurality of spaced, spring loaded pins 14 and 15 disposed vertically in a platform 17 (not shown in Fig. 1 but in Fig. 5) and through the cover.
- the massage apparatus 10 is illustrated as having a rectangular shape in Fig. 1 , it can take on any suitable geometric shape so long as the top surface thereof allows a person to place his or her feet comfortably thereon and change one's direction in an upright position without undue constraint.
- Fig. 2 is a top, plan elevational view of the embodiment of the present invention as shown in Fig. 1.
- the cover 12 is an enclosure having at least one substantially top surface 19 featuring thereon a plurality of openings 20 and 21 which permit a plurality of pins 14 and 15 to extend therethrough.
- spaced rows of two types of pins are disposed on the cover 12.
- the pins 14 and 15 (shown in greater detail in Fig. 5) terminate in one end with dome shaped heads for exerting appropriate amount of pressure on the bottom of the user's feet when the user stands upright over the pins.
- the other end of the pins 14 and 15 are cylinders which terminate with an opening for coupling with a plurality of posts (shown in Figs. 4A - 4D). It should be understood by one skilled in the art that many other layouts are possible to achieve substantially the same physiological effect as the present invention and the present invention should not be restricted to the arrangement and layout described in the accompanying figures.
- footprints 22 and 23 are outlines of the bottom one's feet if one were to stand upright on the apparatus 10. It can be seen from Fig. 2 that the layout of pins 14 and 15 covers essentially all the uneven surface and also accupressure points on the bottom of one's feet. As the layout of pins in the embodiment of the present invention is symmetrical around axis E-E and F-F respectively, the pressure on the bottom of an user's feet 22 and 23 will be distributed substantially evenly no matter which direction the user stands on the apparatus 10.
- Fig. 3 is a bottom, plan elevational view of the base according to the embodiment of the present invention in Fig. 2.
- the base 16 comprises an enclosure with a substantially flat bottom surface having spaced supports 26 for supporting the weight of a person when he or she stands upright on top of the massage apparatus 10. Shown in relief are also outline of a plurality of posts 24 and 25 for receiving a plurality of pins 14 and 15 (not shown in this figure but in Fig. 5). The manner in which the pins cooperate with the posts will be elaborated further below in connection with the description of Figs. 4 and 5 respectively.
- Fig. 4A is a cross section, elevational view of the base of the embodiment of the present invention according to Section A-A in Fig. 3.
- the base 16 comprises the platform 17 disposed therein.
- the platform further comprises a bottom plate 33 supported externally by a plurality of supports 26.
- Disposed within the base 16 are a plurality of posts 44 and 45 which feature graduated heights which accommodates the shape of one feet.
- the height of posts 44, 45 in Fig. 4A extends farthest from the base to contour the arch portion of the bottom of the user's feet.
- the height of posts 54, 55 in Fig. 4B is graduated to shape the middle portion of the bottom of the user's feet; similarly, the height of the posts 74, 75 in Fig. 4D.
- the height of posts 64, 65 in Fig. 4C is the shallowest for catering to the outer portion of the bottom of the user's feet.
- the graduated heights of the posts allow the manufacturer to employ pins of substantially uniform height. This will reduce the overall manufacturing cost of the present invention. It should be understood by one skilled in the art that an equivalent design would be to maintain constant the height of the posts 24 and 25 and vary the height of the pins 14 and 15. As mentioned briefly above, this may increase the manufacturing cost and the expenses of maintaining a varied inventory of pins.
- Fig. 5 is a left side, top and perspective elevational view of the platform of the embodiment of the present invention showing all the spring loaded pins being installed thereon.
- the platform 17 fits snugly within the base 16 of the present invention.
- the platform 17 comprises a top plate 32 and a bottom plate 33 separated with a plurality of spacers 34.
- pin 14 or 15 are shown to be loaded each with a spring 18 over the post 24. It is determined that the optimal diameter size of pins for effective foot reflexology is about 15 mm and the optimal height of pins above the cover is between 15 to 17 mm for a person weighing up to 115 Kilogram.
- the pins 14 and 15 are cylindrical in shape and terminate in substantially dome heads.
- the springs 18 are of substantially the same characteristic. This is possible because the posts 24 and 25 supporting the pins have graduated heights so that simulation of foot reflexology is provided by standing upright on the massage apparatus 10 of the present invention.
- the combination of graduated height of the posts and individual spring loaded spins distributes pressure on the bottom of one's feet substantially evenly. This is one of the novel features of the present invention. It minimises the level of discomfort when the user uses the massage device for the first time. As a result, the user of the present invention can massage his or her feet longer. Typically, the average user can sustain massage and exercise for at least twenty to thirty minutes without feeling the effects of physical exertion. More importantly, the user can also derive the benefits of enhanced cardiovascular activity.
- FIG. 6A is a top, plan elevational view of the embodiment of the present invention according to section E-E in Fig. 2.
- a plurality of openings 20, 21 are provided in the cover 12 for receiving the spring loaded pins (not shown) and permitting the dome shaped heads to be extended therethrough.
- the advantage of this layout is to permit the user of the present invention to change his or her upright direction without stopping his or her massage and exercise routine. For instance, if another person were to step in to the room to speak to the user and the user is facing away from the speaker; the user can turn around and face the speaker while continuing with the ongoing massage cum exercise routine.
- Fig. 6B is a cross section, side and elevational view of the embodiment of the present invention according to section F-F in Fig. 2.
- the cover 12 is shown to have a slightly sloped top surface 19 and also having a plurality of openings 20, 21 being disposed on the same cover.
- the spring of the present invention can be made of metallic of non-metallic material.
- Non-metallic material comprises but is not limited to plastic resin.
- the spacing among the pins may be varied to provide massage of other parts of one's body.
- the modulus of the individual spring may be altered individually to produce massage effect suitable for other purposes.
