Abstract
Apparatus and methods are described for use in mass transfer blood treatment systems (12), such as hemodialysis, hemofiltration or blood oxygenation units, that include a pump (44) having an inlet port (55), an outlet port (56), first and second reservoirs (42), a valve (52) that selectively interconnects the reservoirs to the inlet and outlet ports. A controller (14) synchronizes operation of the valve and first and second reservoirs to provide simultaneous inlet an outlet displacement flow patterns which are independent of each other. The apparatus further may be implemented in a network configuration to permit key parameters regarding a patient's treatment session with the blood treatment unit to be uploaded to a remote health care provider for prompt evaluation.
