Abstract

An applicator for placing and removing a contact lens from an eye. The applicator has a body (1) made from resilient material. At one end a cup (5) is provided to hold a lens (6). Apertunes (8) are provided between the cup (5) and an interior (3) of the body (1). By squeezing and releasing the body (1) air can be either expelled through or drawn into the interior (3) through the apertures (8). This enables a suction to be created (or broken) against the lens in the cup (5) to retain or release the lens (6) therefrom. A central zone (11) of the cup (5) is divided off from the remainder of the cup (5) by a flexible rib (10). Rib (10) thus tends to prevent direct suction action acting on the central part of a lens (6) in the cup (5). A removable cap (2) is provided on body (1) to enable cleaning of the interior (3).

Description

TITLE CONTACT LENS APPLICATOR
TECHNICAL FIELD OF THE INVENTION
This invention relates to a contact lens applicator for placing and removing a contact lens from an eye
BACKGROUND ART OF THE INVENTION
Problems can arise in using the fingers only in applying and removing a contact lens from an eye This is particularly so under unhygienic conditions such as when a wearers hands are contaminated such as from manual work An intention of this invention is to provide an applicator of simple construction and operation which it is envisaged will facilitate placement and removal of a contact lens from an eye A further intention is to provide the public with a useful choice
DISCLOSURE OF THE INVENTION
According to a first embodiment of this invention there is provided a contact lens applicator broadly comprising an enclosed hollow body incorporating a resilient exterior wall element and a contact lens locating cup with at least one interior joining aperture being formed through a wall of the cup to the interior of the body, whereby depressing the resilient wall element exhausts a quantity of air from within the interior out through the interior joining aperture(s) enabling, in a first operational mode on presentation of the cup to a lens to seat the lens therein and with relaxation of the depressing action, a suction to be created between the lens and the apertured wall of the cup to thus retain the lens therein, and in a second operational mode with a lens retained in the cup as aforesaid, depression of the resilient wall element to provide a charge of air to relieve the suction and release the lens According to a second embodiment of this invention there is provided a contact lens applicator as described in the preceding paragraph wherein the at least one interior joining aperture is disposed radially outward of a central zone of the cup.
According to a third embodiment of this invention there is provided a contact lens applicator as described in either of the two immediately preceding paragraphs wherein a periphery of the cup is formed by a continuous lip standing proud of the obverse face of the cup.
According to a fourth embodiment of this invention there is provided a contact lens applicator as described in any one of the three immediately preceding paragraphs wherein at least one sealing rib is formed on the obverse face of the cup to encircle a central zone of the cup, the rib providing that at least a central section of a contact lens seated therein is spaced adjacent apart from that cup face and also creats a barrier between the central zone and the remainder of the cap.
According to a fifth embodiment of this invention there is provided a contact lens applicator as described in the immediately preceding paragraph wherein an apex section of the rib is formed as a featheredge.
According to a sixth embodiment of this invention there is provided a contact lens applicator as described in any one of the five immediately preceding paragraphs wherein a removable cap is provided in a wall of the body enabling access to the interior thereof.
According to a seventh embodiment of this invention there is provide a contact lens applicator as described in any one of the six immediately preceding paragraphs wherein the body is moulded from resilient material.

Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the applicator. BEST MODE OF CARRYING OUT THE INVENTION
An applicator is preferably made with a unitary hollow body 1 other than for a removable cap 2 enabling access, such as for sterilisation purposes, to an interior 3 of the body 1. The body 1 is preferably moulded for a suitable flexible resilient material such as an inert plastics or rubberised material readily sterilised. As described in more detail below and as indicated on Fig.2 the applicator is intended to be operated (squeezed) between a users thumb and finger. The body 1 is shaped and sized accordingly, preferably being of an elongate closed tubular form approximately 60mm in length and 15mm in diameter. The cap 2 is preferably in the form of a tight fitting plug which may be made of a solid form of the material used in the body 1. Preferably the cap 2 is mounted in one end of the body 1 and a contact lens 6 locating cup 5 is incorporated into the opposing end of the body 1.
Contact lens locating cup 5 is dimensioned commensurate but smaller than a typical contact lens 6 enabling a contact lens 6 to seat therein with the peripheral edge of the lens standing proud of the cup. An outer periphery of the cup 5 is formed by a continuous lip 7 standing proud of the obverse face of the cup 5. As depicted in Fig. 2, the lip 7 tends to lightly press on the lens adjacently inward of the outer peripheral edge thereof and form the cup 5 into a sucker. Preferably the extremity of the lip 7 is of a rounded configuration as depicted to assist seating and sealing on a lens.
At least one aperture 8 is provided through the wall 9 forming the cup 5 to the interior 3 of the hollow body 1. By squeezing and releasing the body 1 a quantity of air can either be expelled out of the interior 3 or drawn there-into through the aperture 8. Preferably a plurality of apertures 8 are provided these preferably being spaced radially outward of a central zone 11 of the cup 5. Preferably three equally spaced apart apertures 8 are provided adjacently outward of a rib 10 which encircles and defines the central zone 11.
The rib 10 provides that a lens 6 or at least a central section thereof seated in the cup 5 is spaced adjacently apart from the obverse face of the cup 5. The rib 10 thus forms a small cavity 12 between a lens 6 seated in the cup 5 and the obverse face of the cup 5. The rib 10 also tends to seal off the cavity 12 and associated central zone 11 from the remainder of the cup 5. The rib 10 thus acts as a barrier against the direct suction action of the device into the central zone 11. Preferably the outer extremity of the rib 10 is shaped as a featheredge to provide a flexible skirt that in use deflects (see Fig.2) when impinging onto a contact lens 6.
Referring in particular to Fig.2, in use the applicator can be held and squeezed such as between a thumb and finger to expel a quantity of air from the interior 3 through the apertures 8. In this mode the cup 5 can be presented to a contact lens 6 to seat the lens 6 therein. With release of the depressing action the body 1 tends to return to its normal uncompressed state, as depicted in Fig. 1, and a suction is created through the apertures 8. The suction acts on the adjacent face of the lens 6 to retain the lens 6 in the cup 5. This approach is used to pick-up a lens 6 in readiness for placement on an eye and is used to remove a lens 6 from an eye. With placement of the lens 6 the body 1 is again squeezed to expel a quantity of air and thereby relieve the suction acting on the lens 6 and release the lens 6 onto the eye.
It is found that the rib 10 in particularly the featheredge thereof tends to act as a barrier sub- dividing off the cavity 12. The rib 10 thus tends to prevent the direct action of the suction of the applicator acting on the central section of a lens 6. The rib 10 and the associated central zone 11 also tend to form a small-contained sucker. A restricted bleed aperture 13 may be provided through the wall 9 to join the central zone 1 lwith the interior 3 of the body 1. It may be that in use some "bleeding" may take place between the main section of the cup 5 and the cavity 12, that is across rib 10. This is not found to be detrimental to the operation of the applicator and relieves any marginal suction that may have developed in the cavity.

Claims

1. A contact lens applicator comprising an enclosed hollow body incorporating a resilient exterior wall element and a contact lens locating cup with at least one interior joining aperture being formed through a wall of the cup to the interior of the body, whereby depressing the resilient wall element exhausts a quantity of air from within the interior out through the interior joining aperture(s) enabling, in a first operational mode on presentation of the cup to a lens to seat the lens therein and with relaxation of the depressing action, a suction to be created between the lens and the apertured wall of the cup to thus retain the lens therein, and in a second operational mode with a lens retained in the cup as aforesaid, depression of the resilient wall element to provide a charge of air to relieve the suction and release the lens.
2. A contact lens applicator as claimed in claim 1 wherein the at least one interior joining aperture is disposed radially outward of a central zone of the cup.
3. A contact lens applicator as claimed in claim 1 or claim 2 wherein a periphery of the cup is formed by a continuous lip standing proud of the obverse face of the cup.
4. A contact lens applicator as claimed in any one of claims 1, 2 or 3 wherein at least one sealing rib is formed on the obverse face of the cup to encircle a central zone of the cup, the rib providing that at least a central section of a contact lens seated therein is spaced adjacent apart from that cup face and also creats a barrier between the central zone and the remainder of the cap.
5. A contact lens applicator as claimed in claim 4 wherein an apex section of the rib is formed as a featheredge.
6. A contact lens applicator as claimed in any one of claims 1-5 inclusive wherein a removable cap is provided in a wall of the body enabling access to the interior thereof.
7. A contact lens applicator as claimed in any one of claims 1-6 inclusive wherein the body is moulded from resilient material.
8. A contact lens applicator substantially as herein described with reference to the accompanying drawings.
