  • the freight customer 12 After the shipment is activated, the freight customer 12 is able to send a dispatch alert to a consignee to inform them of a dispatch. This can be done through the Pre-Alert module 26 of the system.
  • the data fields that are generated for the freight customer 12 to send to a consignee are shown in Figure 6. After editing the data contained in the fields, if necessary, an electronic mail message containing the information is sent to the consignee. Alternatively the consignee may be sent an email with a URL in the system to view.

  • the customer enters the routing module 28 and the reference number of the shipment is first entered by the freight customer, so that details of the shipment can be retrieved.
  • the data fields that should be inserted under this module are shown in Figure 7. Referring to Figure 7 the customer 12 would enter the reference number in box 701 to enable the routing order to be displayed.
  • the routing order would include who the order is to 702, any reference number 703, the date the order is issued 704, who the shipper of the goods is 705, instructions on, the date 706, method 707 and local destination 708 that the shipment is to be realised by.
  • a local service provider or forwarder at origin of the goods is listed at 709 and a service provider or local forwarder at the destination of the goods is listed at 710.
  • Routing orders in addition to being sent to service providers servicing the customer may also be sent to service providers servicing other service provider such as a local courier servicing an airline.
  • a freight customer may retrieve details of the status of the shipment, for example, whether the shipment has been loaded onto a transport carrier or if the shipment has arrived at the shipment destination.
  • the shipment status is periodically updated by the service provider handling the shipment using the form shown in Figure 5 to provide continuous updates to the system database.
  • the Communications Server 10 uses the data contained in the form to update the Transactions Database 34 concerning the record of the shipment for access of updated information by a freight customer 12. Shipping Cost Calculator
  • the system also provides a shipping cost calculation. This calculates shipping costs by taking into account the per-unit price given in the quotation, the amount shipped and other variables such as customs clearance charges. The cost calculation can be obtained simply by entering the system reference number.
  • the system also acts as a data centre and organiser since all transactions are recorded on a database, the details regarding the transaction can be retrieved from the Transactions Database 34 via the query server 32. Log files are also kept in each transaction.
  • single or multiple criteria may be used, and a freight customer 12 may use any relevant details such as their name or the service providers' name to obtain details of a record.
  • a list of records may be displayed if there is more than one record.
  • Information on general shipping practice and requirements may be retrieved from the Information Database 36 via the query server 32 for reference by a user.
  • the system includes hyperlinks to transportation agencies, such as airlines, other carriers or warehouse operators , for a user to access further information from these sources.
  • the system includes the ability to book and receive stock status updates from logistics and distribution service providers.
  • a customer would send a request for quotation to a logistics provider entering the email address 802 of the service provider that the quote is requested from.
  • the customer can use an address book to select the service provider by selecting button 803.
  • the system reference is automatically generated and listed in box 804.
  • the current location 805, the number of palettes 806, the number of packs after the palettes have been unpacked 807 and the number of distribution locations 808 can also be entered.
  • the type of commodity is enterable in box 809 and the dimensions and the total number of pieces entered in box 810.
  • the customer submits the request for quotation by selecting box 801 and the system sends an email with an URL linking the service provider to the system or a form to fill in and return.
  • the system also provides for inventory holdings of customers to be updated.
  • the logistics in service provider is entered in box 901 or if necessary selected from an address book accessible by pressing button 902.
  • the system reference is pre-filled in box 903.
  • the account that the inventory is being updated for is filled in by the system at 904.
  • the number of palettes 905, cartons 906 are also entered.
  • the date of the change 907 and time 908 are also entered.
  • the system provides for the weight per carton type 910 and dimension per carton 911 and the total weight 912 to be entered. A user can create more carton types by selecting length 913.

Abstract

La présente invention concerne un système d'expédition comprenant un serveur hébergeant un module de communication et une base de données sur un réseau de communication accessible à un acheteur de marchandises et à un fournisseur de services. Le serveur est conçu pour générer des données d'entrée relatives aux marchandises à expédier, pour transmettre les données à un fournisseur de services et pour permettre à ce dernier de confirmer la réception d'un ordre d'expédition par le réseau de communication. Le système comprend également une base de données dans laquelle peuvent être enregistrées des données échangées par l'acheteur de marchandises et le fournisseur de services.
