Definitions
- the invention is a system for receiving, processing, storing, restoring and supervising film, video, audio and other data in real time in a manner that makes simultaneous and independent use by many operators possible in realtime.
- the invention is called the Realtime Network System or simply the System.
- the System contains numbers of task operator consoles with computer workstations and e.g. equipment for editing, recording and mixing, servers with storage and backup capacity, switches, encoders, status collector, confidence monitors and a digital high rate realtime communication network.
- the System incorporates realtime playback capabilities for video, audio and other data, firewalls, coders and a local or remote network operation center.
- the said network operation center communicates with Systems in house via the local networks of the Systems or via Internet or other communication media on line. This means the network operation central can supervise and service Systems throughout the world on line and faults can be repaired before they interrupt or damage the Systems or the ongoing activities.
- the Systems incorporate status monitors for supervision within the System and for information to the network operation center. In addition there is a confidence monitor to be used by the management of the System.
- the System eliminates the need of copying or converting between media, to wait for file transfers, format conversion, video encoding or any other time-consuming process.
- the System also makes it possible to use system redundances such as redundant power supply and cooling fans, uninterrupted power supply, safety RAID disk configurations, spare disks for automatically replacement of crashed disks without work stoppage, scheduled automated disk to disk backup, scheduled automated disk to tape backup and, as above, a 24 hour supervision, service and administration from the network operation center.
- a typical use of the System is recording of video- and audiosequences, mixing numbers of videosequences, mixing of numbers of audiosequences, mixing numbers of audio- and videosequences, editing, dubbing, video and audio logging and playback of said sequences, all in real time.
- the invention, the System will be described in a configuration for a common task as post-production and editing studio for film and video/audio.
- Fig 2 - Shows the task operator consoles (C) and the computer workstations (W)
- Fig 3 - Shows the Network Operation Center (NOC)
- Fig 1 shows the realtime network system, the System S, in a set up for post- production and editing studio environment for film and video/audio.
- the System has at least one server SC with associated storage in hard disks H and backup drives B using intelligent routines allowing for separation between critical files that require daily backup and non-critical files. This results in shorter backup times and easier hard disk and tape routines.
- the system network N uses LAN technology for communication between units.
- the network communication is controlled by the server SC and a high rate switch SW of typically up to 1 Gbps data rate, allowing large numbers of simultaneous and parallel recording tracks.
- the System can be expanded with several switches SW making the number of tracks theoretically unlimited.
- the System has numbers of task operator consoles C (C1 to Cn) with associated computer workstations W (W1 to Wn) for processing video and audio sequences.
- the task operator consoles C and computer workstations W are described in connection with Fig 2.
- the System contains video encoders VE for receiving film and video/audio sequences, converting to digital form and transferring these digital data via the system network N for storage in the hard disks H and backup drives B. These stored data can thereafter be used in realtime by the computer workstations W and the operators at the task operator consoles C. Due to this realtime access to the storage of the System, there is only need for one encoder VE in the System. There is however possibility to incorporate several encoders VE to fulfil special demands.
- the System has at least one system status controller MIB to collect information on the status of the System and supervise the hardware and operative system status of the System.
- the System may have one or more confidence monitors CM for the management, director producer etc of the System, where the data can be monitored and manipulated but not modified for storage. This way operational test is possible without the risk of accidental storage.
- the System has a least one local or remote network operation center NOC associated with it.
- the Systems transfer data to the network operation center NOC.
- the System includes means, e.g. FTP-servers, to facilitate transfer of data to the network operation center via Internet or other communication media.
- the network operation center is described in connection with Fig 3.
- the System has numbers of task operator consoles C (C1 to Cn) with associated computer workstations W (W1 to Wn) for processing of video and audio sequences.
- This is the task operation center of the System with operators and equipment for e.g. editing, recording, mixing and dubbing of video and audio sequences from the database in realtime.
- the said modified sequences are restored by the system in realtime, accessible in realtime also for other operators in the System.
- the task operator consoles C incorporates realtime video and audio playback capabilities.
- Network operation center A least one network operation center NOC within one of the Systems communicates with Systems in house and remote via the local networks of the Systems or via Internet or other communication media on line. This means the network operation center NOC can supervise and service Systems throughout the world on line and a fault can be repaired before it interrupts or damages the Systems or the ongoing activities.
- the Systems status monitors MIB (Fig 1 ) collects supervision data from the hardware and operative system within the Systems and this information is transmitted to the network operation center NOC (Fig 1 and Fig3).
- the network operation center NOC provides continuous remote service possibilities handling the hardware diagnostics and operative system support including monitoring and administration for each of the Systems around the world.
- the network operation center NOC can deliver continuous 24-hour support, remote monitoring of the health of the Systems, statistics detailing the health of the Systems sent to the respective System regularly, remote updates of software and patches, remote inventory of hardware and software installed in the workstations and servers of the Systems, monitoring alert system from the Systems to their network operation center NOC based on predefined thresholds.
- Transmission security is achieved by means of such as tunneled virtual personnel network VPN (Fig 1 and Fig 3), password protection, cryption and encryption, digital certificates, independent third party to inventory networking security, private IP-addresses, firewall FN (Fig 1 and Fig 3) in the network operation center NOC and optional client-configured firewalls FC (FC1 to FCn) (Fig 1 ) between a network operation central NOC and clients Systems S (S1 to Sn) (Fig 3).
