Abstract

A decompressing method comprising a preparation step for decompressing block compression data contained in compression data sequentially and partially at the time of decompressing compression data containing a plurality of elements of block compression data where pixel data contained in one pixel block, i.e. one of a plurality of matrixes obtained by dividing an image, is compressed using at least entropy encoding, acquiring intermediate information containing at least positional information for accessing that block compression data and storing the intermediate information of at least some elements of block compression data, and a step for decompressing block compression data corresponding to an arbitrary region of the image using the stored intermediate information at the time of decompressing that region. Since the block compression data is decoded not entirely but partially and the intermediate information is stored, image data can be decompressed from an arbitrary position based on the intermediate information and can be outputted even from a printer having a small storage capacity.
