Abstract

An additive for lubricating oils which has the high ability to heighten viscosity index and has shear stability; and a lubricating oil composition containing the additive. The additive for lubricating oils comprises an ethylene/α-olefin random copolymer which is an ethylene/C3-20 α-olefin copolymer comprising 10 to 75 mol% structural units derived from ethylene and 20 to 80 mol% structural units derived from a C8-20 α-olefin, has a dynamic viscosity at 100°C of 500 to 1,000,000 mm2/s, has an intrinsic viscosity [η] of 0.15 to 1.0 dl/g, has a molecular weight distribution (Mw/Mn) as determined by GPC of 4 or lower, and has a number-average molecular weight of 5,000 to 30,000.
