Abstract

The invention relates to a method for operating an internal combustion engine comprising at least four cylinders with a fully variable valve drive for at least one intake valve and one discharge valve per cylinder (CYL), the internal combustion engine being operated with partly shut-off cylinders (CYL) in at least one partial load range (TL1, TL2). In order to increase the thermodynamic efficiency during partial load operation while maintaining the greatest possible smoothness of operation, the cylinders (CYL) are alternately shut off and reactivated in at least one partial load range (TL1, TL2). Preferably, the shut-off phase (RI, ZAS, RO) of a deactivated cylinder (CYL) extends across a minimum of two and a maximum of three operating cycles (A, B, C, D).
