Description
Description
AWASHER/DRYERAND THE CONTROL METHOD THEREOF
[0001] The present invention relates to a washer/dryer that is enabled to operate efficiently by detecting the weight of the laundry contained therein.
[0002] In washer/dryers, preferably in washing machines, the amount of the water intake, cleaning agents such as detergent, softener and the washing program and/or the duration is determined depending on the type and weight of the laundry emplaced therein. Not knowing the amount of laundry, results in using excess amount of water and cleaning agents and the excess use of water leads to the increase of energy consumption. Determining of the amount of load accurately becomes difficult particularly if the laundry is not distributed evenly inside the drum.
[0003] In the state of the art United States of America Patent Application No US20040103485, a washing machine is disclosed wherein the motor is rotated 2/5 revolutions, then the time period this work is completed by the washing machine and the acceleration curve is detected and thereby the amount of load emplaced in the washing machine is determined by means of this data.
[0004] In the state of the art German Patent Application No DE19832292, in a direct drive washing machine, the load estimation is made according to the position reached by the laundry emplaced in the drum when the drum is rotated about the central axis and the current values drawn.
[0005] In the invention explained in state of the art German Patent Application No DE3938822, an optical scanner on the ceiling of the washing machine detects the amount of vertical displacement in the tub and the amount of load is measured accordingly. However, the load cannot be measured accurately by this implementation when there is unbalanced load, that is, in the case that the horizontal displacement is also an important indicator of the amount of load.
[0006] Another implementation is explained in state of the art European Patent No EP1167609. In this document, a number of methods are disclosed for detecting dynamic unbalanced load. One of these methods is the detection of dynamic unbalance in the load by comparing the data received from two
optical sensors disposed such that measurement can be made in two axes parallel to both sides of the tub when viewed from the front.
[0007] The aim of the present invention is the realization of a washer/dryer wherein the weight of the laundry is determined before the start of the washing process, when the laundry is dry, as close to the real value as possible .
[0008] The washer/dryer of the present invention comprises sensors, each disposed at three different directions for measuring the displacement of the tub in three directions and a control card, that detects the amount of load emplaced in the drum by rotating the drum while actuating the motor for at least a short while before starting the washing process and evaluates the change in the displacement data with respect to time received from the sensors during this rotation.
[0009] When the motor is operated for a short while and stopped, the drum makes an oscillatory movement depending on the amount and position of the load emplaced therein and this movement is dampened in time and stops. In this course, the change in data received from the sensor with respect to time relating to displacements in each three directions will be in the form of a gradually dampened wave. In the preferred embodiment of the present invention, the load is measured depending on the wave length, period and dampening time of the waves formed by the said displacement data.
[0010] In an embodiment of the present invention, three different sensors are used, that are disposed on the ceiling, side wall and rear wall of in the washer/dryer for measuring the displacement of the tub in three directions.
[0011] In an embodiment of the present invention, the control card controls whether or not there is a significant displacement in the horizontal direction before actuating the motor. Thus, if the load is distributed in a balanced manner, that is, if only the vertical displacement will be sufficient in determining accurately the load amount, then load calculation is made by only using this data, considering the change in displacement in three directions with respect to time is not required.
[0012] In another embodiment of the present invention, when the control card
controls whether or not there is a significant displacement in the horizontal direction, if at least one of the horizontal displacements is determined to have the values effective in detecting the load, that is, if above a predetermined threshold value, first of all the drum is rotated with a predetermined speed and direction to balance the load. Consequently, again the load estimation is made without using the three directional displacement data. In this embodiment, if the displacement in the horizontal direction cannot be lowered under the threshold value by the motor movement, then load estimation is made by using the measured three directional displacement data.
[0013] After the amount of load is determined, this information is used by the control card to decide on the process durations and the water, detergent etc. amounts to be used.
[0014] The weight of the laundry emplaced in the washer/dryer of the present invention is determined close to the real values before the washing process starts. Thus energy, water and detergent are used in the required amounts and wastefulness is prevented.
[0015] The washer/dryer realized in order to attain the aim of the present invention and the load detecting method used in the said washer/dryer is illustrated in the attached figures, where:
[0016] Figure 1 - is the sideways schematic view of a washer/dryer.
[0017] Figure 2 - is the front schematic view of an embodiment of the present invention.
[0018] Figure 3 - is the flow chart used in determining the load in an embodiment of the present invention.
[0019] Figure 4 - is the flow chart used in determining the load in an embodiment of the present invention.
[0020] Figure 5 - is the flow chart used in determining the load in an embodiment of the present invention.
[0021] Figure 6 - is the diagram showing the change of displacement in the x direction with respect to time measured by the sensor in an embodiment of the present invention.
[0022] The elements illustrated in the figures are numbered as follows:
1. Washer/dryer
2. Tub
3. Drum
4. Motor
5. Sensor
6. Control card
[0023] The washer/dryer (1) of the present invention, preferably a washing machine, comprises a tub (2), a drum (3) disposed in the tub (2) wherein the laundry is emplaced, rotating around an axis, a motor (4) providing the actuation of the said drum (3), at least one sensor (5) positioned in each of the three different directions (x, y, z) such that the displacement (dx, dy, dz) of the tub (2) in three different directions (x, y, z) can be measured and a control card (6) that actuates the motor (5) for at least a short while before starting the washing process for rotating the drum (3) and during this rotation determines the load amount (L) emplaced in the drum (3) according to the displacement data (dx, dy, dz) received from the sensors (5) (Figures 1 , 2 and 3).
[0024] In the preferred embodiment of the present invention, the load amount (L) is determined by taking into account the wave length (λx, λy, λz), period (Tx, Ty, Tz) and the dampening durations (tdamp x, tdamp y, tdamp z) in the change of the displacement data (dx, dy, dz) with respect to time. Calculation is made by using a function related to the said variables determined by experimental studies and recorded in the control card (6) (Figure 6).
[0025] In an embodiment of the present invention, in order to measure the displacement (dx, dy, dz) of the tub (2) in three directions (x, y, z), the sensors (5) are disposed on the ceiling, side wall and rear wall of the washer/dryer (1) (Figures 1 and 2).
[0026] The sensor (5) used in the washer/dryer (1) of the present invention makes optical, preferably infrared detection.
[0027] In the control card (6), of the amounts of the washing, rinsing water, detergent and/or softener and at least one of the suitable washing durations required for each amount of load (L) is recorded. The control card (6) adjusts the water, detergent and/or softener amounts to be used
in accordance with the detected amount of load (L).
[0028] The washer/dryer (1) of the present invention operates according to the following method:
- Actuating the motor (4) for a while and halting and measuring the displacement (dx, dy, dz) of the tub (2) in three directions (x, y, z) in the meanwhile (101),
- Determining the load (L) according to displacement (dx, dy, dz) data (102),
- Starting the washing program according to the load (L) data (103). [0029] In an embodiment of the method (100) of the present invention, after the step of actuating the motor (4) for a while and halting and measuring the displacement (dx, dy, dz) of the tub (2) in three directions (x, y, z) in the meanwhile (101), the steps of comparing the displacements (dx, dz) in the horizontal directions (x, z) with a threshold value (dx tv, dz tv) (104), in case the displacements (dx, dz) in the horizontal directions (x, z) are below the threshold value (dx tv, dz tv), then determining the load (L) by taking into consideration the displacement (dy ) in the vertical direction (y) (105) (Figure 4). On the other hand, if the displacements (dx, dz) in the horizontal directions (x, z) are above the threshold value (dx tv, dz tv), the load (L) is calculated by examining the change of displacement data (dx, dy, dz) with respect to time received from all the sensors (5), since it is not possible to accurately detect the load (L) by using the displacement (dy) in the vertical direction (y) (Figure 4). [0030] In a version of this embodiment, after the step of comparing the displacements (dx, dz) in the horizontal directions (x, z) with a threshold value (dx tv, dz tv) (104), if the displacements (dx, dz) are above a predetermined threshold value (dx tv, dz tv), the step of actuating the motor (4) for a while and halting (106) is implemented and thus the displacements (dx, dz) in the horizontal directions (x, z) are tried to be reduced below the threshold value (dx tv, dz tv)- After this process, the step of comparing the displacements (dx, dz) in the horizontal directions (x, z) with a threshold value (dx tv, dz tv) (104) is repeated and if the displacements (dx, dz) are still above the threshold value (dx tv, dz tv), then
load (L) is calculated as in the above explained manner (Figure 5). With the washer/dryer (1) of the present invention, the weight of the laundry placed therein, that is the load (L) can be determined as close as possible to the real value before the washing process starts. Consequently, not only water and detergent savings are accomplished but also excess energy consumption is prevented. The washer/dryer (1) is enabled to operate more efficiently and safely.
