Description

Smoking article filter
Description
The invention relates to a filter for a smoking article such as a cigarette and also to an apparatus for making the filter.
It is well known that smoking articles such as cigarettes may be provided with a filter comprising a plug of filter material such as cellulose acetate tow wrapped in a sheet known as plugwrap. The filter is attached to a rod of tobacco by a further sheet wrapper, known as tipping paper.
The invention provides an improved filter for a smoking article comprising an elongate body of first filter material with at least one longitudinal, peripheral groove, and a pocket of second filter material disposed within the first material.
The pocket of second material may be disposed in the first material beneath the groove.
The body of first filter material may have a generally cylindrical periphery around which a plurality of the longitudinal grooves is regularly spaced. The first filter material may comprise a cellulosic tow and the second filter material may comprise a particulate filter additive such as a particulate carbon containing material. The pocket of second filter material may extend along the longitudinal axis of the body of first filter material so as to be surrounded by the first material.
The body of first filter material may be wrapped with a plugwrap around its periphery and in the or each groove. A tipping paper may bridge the or each groove to form a ventilation passageway for ventilation air that may enter through ventilation holes in the tipping paper.
The body of first filter material may have a mouth end and a smoking material end, and the or each groove may extend from adjacent the smoking material end and terminate at the mouth end or vice versa. The invention also includes a smoking article comprising the filter and a tobacco rod attached to the filter.
The invention further includes a smoking article comprising a rod of smokeable material and a filter attached thereto, the filter comprising a single plug of filter material with longitudinal peripheral grooves configured to receive ventilation air for smoke drawn from the rod through the filter, and a pocket in the filter material between and underlying the grooves, the pocket containing a filter additive.
The invention also provides a method of forming a filter for a smoking article, comprising forming in a body of a first filter material a pocket containing a second filter material, and forming at least one longitudinal groove in the periphery of the body of first filter material.
Further provided according to the invention is an apparatus for manufacturing filters for smoking articles, comprising means for forming in a body of a first filter material a pocket containing a second filter material, and means for forming at least one longitudinal groove in the periphery of the body of first filter.
An injector may be provided to inject the second filter material in particulate form into the first material to form the pocket and means may be included for indenting the or each groove into the periphery of the body of first filter material.
In order that the invention may be more fully understood an embodiment thereof will now be described by way of illustrative example with reference to the accompanying drawings in which:
Figure 1 is a schematic illustration of a filter for a cigarette; Figure 2 is an illustration of the filter of Figure 1 attached to a rod of tobacco to form a cigarette; Figure 3 illustrates schematically the process of attaching the filter to the tobacco rod using tipping paper;
Figure 4 is a longitudinal sectional view of the cigarette shown in Figure 2; Figure 5 is a side view of the cigarette of Figure 4 showing ventilation holes; Figure 6 is a longitudinal sectional view of the cigarette with an alternative filter configuration;
Figure 7 is a schematic illustration of an apparatus for forming filters of the first and second filter materials; and
Figures 8A & 8B show operation of a device for forming longitudinal peripheral grooves in the filter.
Referring to Figure 1, a cigarette filter includes a generally cylindrical, elongate body 1 of first filter material, in this example cellulose acetate tow. The outer cylindrical periphery of the body 1 is covered with a plugwrap 2 that comprises sheet material such as paper. Formed in the cylindrical surface is plurality of longitudinally extending linear grooves 3 that are regularly spaced around the periphery. In this example, four equally spaced grooves are provided.
A pocket 4 is formed within the first material that contains a second filter material in the form of a particulate additive, for example carbon particles. The pocket 4 is disposed symmetrically about the cylindrical axis of the body 1.
As illustrated in Figure 2, the filter body 1 is attached to a tobacco rod 5 which, in the usual way, comprises tobacco leaf or substitute wrapped in a paper wrapper 6. The body 1 of the filter may be attached to the tobacco rod 5 by means of tipping paper 7 that is glued around the cylindrical periphery of the body 1 and the end of the rod 5. The tipping paper 7 bridges the grooves 3 to form elongate ventilation channels that admit air into the mouth of the smoker. To this end, ventilation holes 8 are formed in - A -
the tipping paper in alignment with the grooves 3, so that air can be drawn into the grooves by the user for passage to the user's mouth at mouth end 9 of the filter.
In the embodiment illustrated in Figures 2 to 5, the grooves 3 extend from mouth end 9 to a position adjacent to but not touching tobacco end 10 of the filter. Thus, in use, when the user draws on the cigarette, air is drawn in the direction of arrows X shown in Figure 4 into the grooves 3 for passage out of the mouth end 9 into the user's mouth in the direction of arrows Y. The plugwrap 2 may be air impermeable to ensure that air drawn into the grooves 3 travels longitudinally along them. The air from the grooves mixes in the user's mouth with the mainstream smoke drawn through the body 1 of the filter.
The mainstream smoke is filtered both by the carbon containing particles in the pocket 4 and also by means of the cellulose acetate tow that comprises the main body 1 of the filter. As known in the art, particulate carbon can be used to filter vapour phase components from the smoke and the cellulose acetate tow can filter particulate components from the smoke. The pocket 4 containing the particulate carbon material is located within the cellulose acetate tow beneath the grooves and is generally surrounded by the cellulose acetate material.
Thus, as illustrated in Figure 4, the grooves 3 extend from adjacent the tobacco end 10 of the filter into the mouth end where they terminate in an opening to allow ventilation air to enter the user's mouth.
An alternative configuration is illustrated in Figure 6 in which the grooves 3 are open at the tobacco end 10 to supply ventilation air into the tobacco rod. The grooves 3 terminate adjacent the mouth end 9 and do not provide passageways to the mouth. When the user draws on the cigarette, ventilation air is drawn through ventilation holes 8 into the grooves 3 in the direction on arrows X and passes along the grooves towards the tobacco end 10 to mix with the smoke passing from the tobacco rod into the filter, the ventilation air changing its direction of flow by substantially 180° as indicated by arrows Z so as to travel with the smoke towards the mouth end 9 of the filter .
Additionally, for the example shown in Figure 6, the tipping paper 7 may be provided with transparent portions (not shown) which overlie the grooves 3 in order to reveal to the user the ventilation passageways provided by the grooves.
A method of manufacturing the filter will now be described with reference to Figures 7 and 8. Referring to Figure 7, a substantially continuous flow of cellulose acetate tow 12 is fed in the direction of arrow 13 into a funnel 14 to provide a generally cylindrical body of cellulose acetate material 14, which is passed through a garniture 15 that attaches plugwrap to supply it continuously from a reel 16. A particulate additive such as carbon particles is discontinuously fed through an injection device 17 into the tow to form sequential pockets 4 of the particulate material along the axis of the tow 12. Injection device 17 comprises an elongate injection nozzle 18, a reservoir 19 of the particulate material and a supply of compressed gas e.g. compressed air 20 which can be pulsed in order to produce the sequential pockets 4 of particulate material within the tow 12. The resulting filter material that passes out of the device in direction 21 can subsequently be cut into individual segments for use in making cigarettes. The cut length may be suitable for producing two cigarettes in tandem or individual cigarettes, as required. Also, the cutting may be carried out as a multi stage process in which lengths of filter material for use with multiple cigarettes are first cut and are then later cut into lengths suitable for use in manufacturing cigarettes in tandem or individually. Reference is directed to WO 2006/059134 for further details of a suitable technique for forming the pockets 4 in the tow 12.
A method of imparting the grooves into the filter 1 is illustrated in Figure 8. A length of the filter rod material produced by the process illustrated in Figure 7, comprising the filter body 1 containing at least one pocket 4, wrapped with plugwrap 2, is placed between first and second plates 22, 23 illustrated in Figure 8A. The plate 23 is heated and provided with elongate groove forming projections 24, one for each of the grooves illustrated in Figure 1. The plate 22, is moved in the direction of arrow 25 over and parallel to the plate 23 with the filter body 1 engaged between the plates as illustrated in Figure 8 A, so as to roll the filter 1 in the direction of arrow 26 over the projections 24. The groove forming projections 24 are driven into the generally cylindrical body 1 and form the grooves 3 in the filter body 1. During the process of groom formation, the plugwrap 2 is driven inwardly into the grooves so as to line both the grooves and the cylindrical exterior periphery of the filter body 1. The resulting grooves are shown in Figure 8B and are generally U shaped although other groove cross sections can be achieved by suitably configuring the groove forming projections 24. The resulting length of filter material 1 can then be cut into suitable length for attachment to one or more tobacco rods 5, for example by the process described with reference to Figure 3.
Many modifications and variations fall within the scope of the invention. For example, instead of forming the grooves 3 by rolling the filter plug over a plurality of fixed position groove forming projections, the filter may be compressed between dies mounted with projections configured to form the grooves. Also, the grooves 3 need not extend from one end of the filter to closely adjacent the other end. The grooves could, for instance, extend only halfway along the filter length. This applies to the groove configuration of Figure 4 and in particular to the reverse groove arrangement of Figure 6.
Also, whilst the grooves have been described as linear grooves that are parallel to the longitudinal axis A-A, other shapes can be used, for example spiral or other serpentine configurations.
Additionally, other materials can be used in the pocket 4 and for example a liquid could be injected into the pocket 4 rather than particulate material.
