Abstract

A reciprocating piston engine is described. According to one aspect of the present invention, the reciprocating piston engine comprises at least one cylinder and a piston which is guided therein and a system for fuel injection, wherein the engine operates entirely or predominantly as a compression-ignition engine, and wherein the system for fuel injection is configured in such a way that, in every work cycle, a large part of the fuel which is to be injected in the work cycle into the cylinder is injected in a time period which is smaller than or equal to the respective ignition delay time. According to the invention, a large part of the fuel is therefore injected before the compression ignition takes place.
