- the furniture insert may be adapted to be moved between the first position and the second position along a substantially horizontal path, such as the path followed by a sliding movement, or the likes.
- the furniture insert may be adapted to be moved between the first position and the second position along tortuous path.
- the first position may be a lower position.
- the second position may be an upper or raised position.
- the first position may be lower than the second position.
- the first and second positions may be located at substantially a same height relative to one another.
- the furniture member or insert In the first position the furniture member or insert may be arranged to cover part of a bed, a bed-cushion, or seating and in a second position the furniture member or insert may be arranged to uncover the bed, bed-cushion, or seating so that the bed, bed-cushion, or seating may be accessible and/or useable. In the second position, the furniture member or insert may be spaced apart, e.g. spaced above, the bed, bed- cushion or seating.
- the bed-cushion may be of a defined thickness such that, when the bed, or seat-bed, is arranged as a bed, an upper surface of the bed cushion is at substantially a same height, relative to the vehicle, as an upper surface of the bed. That is, the upper surface of the bed-cushion may be substantially level with an upper surface of the bed. As such, in use, the bed-cushion serves as an extension of the seat-bed, thus beneficially providing additional width to the bed and comfort to the user.
- the furniture member or insert and/or the first surface thereof
- the furniture member or insert may abut or be adjacent to an underside of a structure such as a worktop, work-surface or piece of furniture.
- the furniture member or insert may comprise a lip or raised section arranged along at least a portion of an edge of the insert. Such a lip or raised portion may permit the insert to operate as a shelf in the first position, whereby items may be prevented from sliding or rolling from the surface of the insert. This may be of particular benefit when the vehicle is moving and/or when the vehicle is parked on an uneven surface.
- the furniture member or insert may comprise a barrier or plate arranged substantially orthogonal to an upper surface of an upper section of the furniture member or insert, the barrier or plate arranged along at least a portion of the edge of the furniture member or insert.
- the provision of a barrier or plate may beneficially serve to protect an edge of a surface, such as a table-top or work-top, to which the furniture member or insert is connected in the second position.
- the furniture member or insert When in the second position, the furniture member or insert may be located within a storage area, and/or in a stowed position. In the second position, the upper surface of the upper section may be obscured from view from a user located within the vehicle. Beneficially, such an arrangement permits the insert to operate as a shelf in a first position, and as storage in the second position. Further, such an arrangement may permit transition of the insert between the first and second position without a requirement to remove any items that may have been stored on the upper surface of the insert.
- the first surface may be an upper surface of an upper section of the furniture member or insert.
- At least a portion of the furniture member or insert may be substantially planar, such that it may be suitable for use as a shelf in the first position.
- the upper surface of the upper section of the furniture member or insert may comprise at least one recessed portion.
- the furniture member or insert may comprise at least one fixing mechanism.
- the fixing mechanism may preferably comprise a magnet but may alternatively comprise another suitable fixing mechanism, such as a catch or the like.
- the at least one fixing mechanism (e.g. the magnet) may be fixedly attached to, or provided within, the at least one recessed portion.
- the provision of such recessed portions may permit the magnets to be substantially flush, and/or embedded within, the first surface of the furniture member or insert.
- An upper edge of the lip or raised section may be substantially flush with an upper surface of the work-top.
- An inner face or the lip or raised section (that is, a face facing towards the work-top) may be substantially flush with an outer edge of the worktop.
- the insert may have no sharp corners, thus minimising the chances that a user may be injured when moving the insert between designated positions.
- the land vehicle may comprise a cooperating mechanism, e.g. for electively cooperating with the fixing mechanism, e.g. to selectively secure the furniture member or insert.
- the cooperating mechanism may be provided on the structure, e.g. such as an undersurface of the structure (e.g. the worktop or work-surface or piece of furniture).
- the cooperating mechanism may comprise further magnets and/or a metal element, such as a ferrous metal element, which may be arranged such that the furniture member or insert may be magnetically affixed to the land vehicle (e.g. to the structure, such as the undersurface of the structure) in the second position.
- the structure may be or comprise furniture, and/or kitchen fittings, such as cupboards and/or work-tops.
- the provision of magnets may be of benefit because it may permit a simple configuration or reconfiguration of the insert between first and second positions, and requires minimal force. Further, since in use the furniture member or insert may be located in the second position only when the bed, or bed-seat, is configured as a bed, and thus when the vehicle is stationary, there is no requirement for the insert to be held in the second position by a force substantially greater than a magnetic force required to overcome the weight of the furniture member or insert. That is, there is no requirement for the insert to be held in the second position by a magnetic force that would be adequate to hold the furniture member or insert in the second position during movement of the vehicle.
- the furniture member or insert may comprise a lower section, wherein the lower section may comprise a pliant or deformable material.
- the pliant or deformable material may comprise foam or the likes, and/or wherein the pliant or deformable material may be upholstered.
- the lower section of the furniture member or insert may be a cushion.
- a lower surface of the upper section may be upholstered.
- the provision of a pliant material on the lower surface serves to prevent possible injury to a person using the bed.
- the lower section may be substantially thicker than the upper section.
- the lower section may be of a defined thickness such that, when the insert is located in the first position, an upper surface of the upper section is not lower, relative to the vehicle, than an upper surface of a seat of the bed, or seat-bed, when the bed, or seat-bed, is configured as a seat.
- a lower surface of the upper section of the furniture member or insert may be fixedly attached to an upper surface of the lower section (e.g. the pliant or deformable material).
- a lower surface of the upper section may be removably attached to an upper surface of the lower section, such that the pliant material of the lower section may be removable, for washing, replacement, maintenance, or otherwise.
- a lower surface of the lower section may comprise at least one section of a component of a hook and loop fastener.
- the further cushion may be a part of the bed, and may be a bed-cushion.
- the hook portion of the hook and loop fastener is affixed to the insert and the loop portion of the hook and look fastener is affixed to the further cushion.
- Such an arrangement beneficially ensures that the hook-and loop fastener does not negatively impact the comfort of a person using the bed.
- the upper section may comprise a rigid material, such as plywood, hardwood, metal or the likes.
- the upper surface of the upper section may be smooth and/or polished and/or laminated.
- a method of use of a furniture member or insert suitable for use in a land vehicle comprising living accommodation, wherein the furniture member or insert is adapted for use as a shelf or surface and/or is configured such that a first surface of the furniture member or insert is exposed in a first position within the land vehicle, and the furniture member or insert is configured to be stowed in a second position within the land vehicle and wherein the method comprises the steps of: manually moving or removing the insert from one of the first or second positions within in the vehicle, and positioning the insert in the other of the first or second positions within the vehicle.

Description
VEHICLE SYSTEM
FIELD OF INVENTION
The present invention relates to a configuration of a vehicle, such as a recreational vehicle, motor home, camper van or the likes, and an associated power supply system.
BACKGROUND OF INVENTION
Vehicles, such as Recreational Vehicles (RVs), motor-homes, caravanettes, camper vans and the likes, provide both transport and living/sleeping accommodation. Such vehicles are often fitted with a small kitchen comprising appliances typically found in a domestic kitchen, such as refrigerators, microwaves, cookers and hobs. Further amenities that may be found in such a vehicle may include, for example, lighting, water heaters, kettles, televisions and air conditioning.
The vehicles may also comprise a gas supply. Gas may be used for appliances that would place too great a burden on a battery supply, such as heating, for an oven and/or hob for cooking purposes, or for heating water. Often the refrigerator is capable of being gas powered. As such, the contents of the refrigerator may be cooled when an electrical power source to the vehicle is unavailable, for example when a Leisure Battery is discharged and/or the vehicle is in transit.
It is an object of at least one embodiment of at least one aspect of the present invention to seek to address one or more problems and/or disadvantages of the prior art.
SUMMARY OF INVENTION
According to a first aspect of the present invention, there is provided a land vehicle comprising living accommodation, wherein the vehicle further comprises a hybrid or electric vehicle drivetrain and an electrical or electrochemical power source configured to supply power to the hybrid or electric vehicle drivetrain during at least one operational configuration of the drivetrain; and a power supply adapted to supply power to domestic appliances, wherein the power supply is electrically connected or connectable to the electrical or electrochemical power source.
The power supply may be configurable for use when the vehicle is not coupled to nor operatively associated with a further power source that is separate and/or located external to the vehicle. Beneficially, such an arrangement may provide an efficient and reliable means to provide power to amenities, such as domestic
appliances, without the need for the vehicle to be located at a facility, such as a campsite, which provides an external power source for the purposes of supplying power to the amenities or for charging a battery, such as a leisure battery.
Beneficially, such an arrangement may also enable the vehicle to be operated without a gas supply to provide fuel/power to the amenities. The use of gas to supply amenities, such as gas powered fridges or cookers, and the necessary associated gas pipework, may be subject to strict regulations. As such, by eliminating a dependency on gas, the degree of freedom of the interior designers of such land vehicles may be increased.
The vehicle may be a recreational vehicle, such as a motorhome, a campervan, a caravanette, a bus-conversion, a truck-camper, or the likes. The vehicle may be an integrated motorhome, wherein a driving area is integrated into the living accommodation. The vehicle may comprise sleeping accommodation for at least one person. The vehicle may provide accommodation for between two and eight people. Such a vehicle may also comprise a kitchen, or kitchenette area which may contain cooking equipment.
The hybrid or electric vehicle drivetrain may comprise an electric propulsion system. As such, the vehicle may achieve a greater overall fuel economy in comparison to a conventional vehicle with only an internal combustion engine. The hybrid vehicle drivetrain may comprise both an internal combustion engine and an electric propulsion system. The vehicle may be a parallel hybrid, wherein both the electric propulsion system and the internal combustion engine are adapted to drive the wheels. Alternatively, the vehicle may be a series hybrid, wherein the purpose of the internal combustion engine may be to generate electricity to power the electric propulsion system and/or to recharge the electrical or electrochemical power source. The vehicle may comprise an electrical generator such as an alternator, which may be operable by the internal combustion engine. The electrical generator may be operable to recharge the electrical or electrochemical power source.
The electric or electrochemical power source may be or comprise at least one battery, wherein the at least one battery may comprise at least one cell, and wherein the at least one cell may be directly or indirectly electrically connected or connectable to the electric propulsion system. Such a power source may typically be located below a floor plan of the vehicle, and/or within a suitable storage area. The electric or electrochemical power source may comprise a supercapacitor, ultra-capacitor, a fuel cell, such as a Hydrogen fuel cell, or a flow cell. The battery may comprise at least one
Lithium-Ion battery, Nickel-Metal Hydride battery, Lead-acid battery, Zebra battery, or other liquid chemical battery, or the likes.
The land vehicle may comprise a regenerative brake, and wherein the regenerative brake may be directly or indirectly electrically connected or connectable to the electrical or electrochemical power source, e.g. to at least partially recharge the electrical or electrochemical power source. Further systems generally associated with extending the efficiency of a vehicle, particularly a hybrid or electric vehicle may also be employed, such as a stop-start system.
The internal combustion engine may be adapted to combust petrol or diesel and/or Liquid Petroleum Gas (LPG). The internal combustion engine may also be adapted to combust Compressed Natural Gas (CNG). The use of LPG typically reduces emissions of C02 and particulate matter in comparison to the use of diesel. This may be beneficial, since in the event that the engine must be left running to provide power to amenities, or to the electrical or electrochemical power source, the impact to the local environment may be reduced. Further, the provision to combust LPG or CNG may reduce an impact to the health and wellbeing of a vehicle user, and may improve an overall user experience.
The land vehicle may be a plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV). The electrical or electrochemical power source may be adapted to receive power from a further power source located external to the vehicle. The power supply may be adapted to receive power from the electrical or electrochemical power source. Beneficially, such a vehicle may charge the electric or electrochemical power source from a designated charger. Alternatively, such a vehicle may be adapted to charge the electric or electrochemical power source by means of a camp-site 'hook-up cable' or the likes. Further, the designated charger may be a wireless charger.
The electrical or electrochemical power source may be adapted to receive power from, and/or provide power to, the electric propulsion system.
The power supply may comprise an inverter adapted to convert a DC current from the electrical or electrochemical power source to an AC current. The power supply may be configured to provide an AC output with a frequency of substantially in the range of (but not limited to) 50 to 60Hz. The power supply may be optionally configured to provide an AC output voltage of substantially in the range of (but not limited to) 100 to 120V or 220 to 240V. Beneficially, the provision of an AC power supply configured to an appropriate frequency and voltage may permit the use of standard household/domestic appliances. Further, the power supply may be adaptable such
that the frequency of the supply or an output voltage of the supply is configurable. Beneficially, such an arrangement would permit the use of standard household/domestic appliances that are adapted for different supplies, as may be the case when travelling internationally in the land vehicle. For example, the AC mains supply in mainland Europe is typically 50Hz, 230 to 240 V, whereas the AC mains supply in the Far-Eastern countries, such as Japan or South Korea, may be 60Hz and between 100 and 1 10V. Further, vehicles imported from one geographical region, and used in another geographical region, may require adaptation. The vehicle may be adapted to provide any combination of any or all of the voltage and/or frequency ranges indicated above.
The power supply may comprise a power regulator or transformer to convert a DC voltage from the electrical or electrochemical power source to a DC voltage suitable for use with domestic appliances. Beneficially, this may permit the use of domestic appliances designed for the camping/motorhome market. The DC voltage suitable for use with domestic appliances may be substantially 12V or substantially 24V. Typically, domestic appliances for use within such motorhomes or the likes may be designed to require 12V or 24V input voltages.
The land vehicle may comprise at least one domestic electrical socket electrically connected to the power supply. The at least one domestic electrical socket may accept a standard domestic electrical plug, such as (but not limited to) a BS 4573 plug (shaver socket), a BS 1363 plug (UK standard domestic plug), a standard United States, European or Japanese plug, or the likes. The at least one electrical socket may be configurable to accept standard domestic electrical plug conforming to different standards, or with different form factors or may be configured according to the standard for different territories, e.g. two blade, two or three pin, and/or the like.
The power supply may be adapted to supply power to the at least one domestic electrical socket during the at least one operational configuration of the drivetrain. The power supply may be adapted to supply power to the at least one domestic electrical socket while the hybrid vehicle drivetrain is active and/or when the land vehicle is enabled and/or when the land vehicle is in motion or being driven. The power supply may be adapted to supply power to the at least one domestic electrical socket while the hybrid vehicle drivetrain is inactive and/or when the land vehicle is disabled and/or when the land vehicle is stationary. Beneficially, the provision of a domestic power supply while the vehicle is operative (i.e. being driven) permits the continued use of domestic appliances during the at least one operational configuration of the drivetrain.
This may enable the preparation of food, such as by means of slow-cooking, or the heating of water intended for later use for a shower, while the vehicle is operational, for example, while the vehicle is being driven. Further facilities that may be enabled by the provision of a domestic power supply while the vehicle is operative may include at least one tea/coffee making facility, soup maker, popcorn maker, pressure cooker, halogen cooker, or the likes.
The power supply may be adapted to supply power to the at least one domestic electrical socket at a predetermined time. The power supply may be adapted to supply power to the at least one domestic electrical socket at a predetermined time during the at least one operational configuration of the drivetrain. The power supply and/or the at least one domestic socket may incorporate at least one timer, such as a programmable timer. Alternatively, or additionally, a timer such as a portable timer, or a discrete timer, may be used in conjunction with an appliance and/or the at least one domestic electrical socket. Beneficially, the use of at least one timer enables a user to coincide an arrival of the vehicle at a destination with, for example, the completion of food preparation in a slow cooker, the heating of water for a shower, or the likes.
The timer and/or the power supply may operate directly or indirectly in cooperation with a navigation system, such as a GPS navigation system.
As such, the preparation of food, or the likes, may be accurately controlled, such that the completion of the preparation of food, or the likes, coincides with the arrival of the vehicle at a destination.
Alternatively, or additionally, at least one domestic appliance may be adapted to receive electrical power directly from the power supply, i.e. without a plug and socket arrangement. That is, at least one domestic appliance may be directly or indirectly connected to the power supply.
The electrical or electrochemical power source may be configured to provide power to the electric propulsion system and the power supply. The provision of power to the electric propulsion system and the power supply may be concurrent. The vehicle may be adapted such that the provision of power to the electric propulsion system may be prioritised over the provision of power to the at least one domestic socket. Alternatively, the vehicle may be adapted such that the provision of power to the at least one domestic socket may be prioritised over the provision of power to the electric propulsion system. In particular, when the vehicle is a hybrid vehicle, the vehicle may be adapted to revert, e.g. automatically revert, to use of the internal combustion engine when the electrical or electrochemical power source is insufficient (e.g. is below a
predefined or calculated threshold), or contains insufficient charge (e.g. when the state of charge is below a predefined or calculated threshold), to provide power to both the electric propulsion systems and the at least one domestic electrical socket.
The power supply may be configurable for use when the vehicle is operatively associated with a further power source separate from, and/or located external to, the vehicle. The vehicle may be configured such that the electrical or electrochemical power source is rechargeable from the further power source. When the vehicle is operatively associated with the further power source located external to the vehicle, the further power source may be electrically connected or connectable (e.g. directly connected or connectable rather than via the electrical or electrochemical power source) to the power supply and/or the at least one domestic electrical socket. As such, when the vehicle is in the proximity of such a further power source, such as a campsite 'hook-up cable' or the likes, the electrical or electrochemical power source need not be used to power the at least one domestic socket, beneficially extending the range of the vehicle and/or permitting charging, or faster charging, of the electrical or electrochemical power source.
The vehicle and/or the power supply may be configured for use such that when the vehicle is operatively associated with a further power source separate from, and/or located external to, the vehicle, at least one appliance may receive electrical power directly or indirectly from the further power source separate from, and/or located external to, the vehicle and/or the at least one appliance may receive electrical power directly or indirectly from the power supply.
The power supply may be adapted to supply power, e.g. via a domestic electrical plug and socket arrangement or via a direct, permanent and/or or hard-wired connection, to domestic appliances such as water heaters, electric cooker, slow cookers or the likes, while the hybrid or electric vehicle drivetrain is active and/or when the land vehicle is enabled and/or when the land vehicle is in motion or being driven.
The power supply may be adapted to supply power to domestic appliances and/or domestic electrical sockets without interruption when the vehicle transitions between a state in which the hybrid or electric vehicle drivetrain is active and/or when the land vehicle is enabled and/or when the land vehicle is in motion or being driven and a state in which the hybrid or electric vehicle drivetrain is inactive and/or when the land vehicle is disabled and/or when the land vehicle is stationary.
The land vehicle may comprise a domestic consumer unit in electrical connection with the power supply, wherein the domestic consumer unit may comprise at least one circuit breaker, fuse, residual current device (RCD), or the likes.
The living accommodation may comprise a bed or seat-bed, wherein the bed or seat-bed may be retractable, collapsible or configurable as at least one seat or bench and/or as a bed.
According to a second aspect of the present invention, there is provided a method of use of a land vehicle of the first aspect, the method comprising the steps of: supplying power to a power supply from an electrical or electrochemical power source; supplying power to a hybrid or electric vehicle drivetrain from the electrical or electrochemical power source during at least one operational configuration of the drivetrain; and supplying power from the power supply to at least one domestic appliance.
According to a third aspect of the present invention, there is provided a method of manufacture of a land vehicle comprising living accommodation, wherein the method comprises the steps of: providing an electrical or electrochemical power source that is connected, connectable or selectively connectable to a power supply, such that in use, the electrical or electrochemical power source is operable to supply power to the power supply; providing electrical connectivity between a hybrid or electric vehicle drivetrain and the electrical or electrochemical power source, such that in use the electrical or electrochemical power source supplies power to, or receives power from, the hybrid or electric vehicle drivetrain; wherein in use, the power supply is operable or adapted to supply power to at least one domestic appliance.
The land vehicle may be a vehicle according to the first aspect.
According to a fourth aspect of the present invention there is provided a land vehicle comprising living accommodation, wherein the vehicle further comprises a platform, which may be mounted or attached to the rest of the vehicle, wherein at least a part of the platform is moveable or configurable between at a first state in which at least a portion of the platform protrudes from the vehicle; and a second state in which the platform does not protrude from the vehicle. The platform may configured such that it is accessible (or only accessible) by a user positioned outside the vehicle when the platform is in the first state. The platform may be configured such that the platform is accessible (or only accessible) by a user positioned inside the vehicle when the platform is in the second state.
At least part of the platform may be substantially planar. At least a part of the platform may be fixedly attached to the vehicle. Beneficially, the platform may be affixed to the vehicle in a manner that permits the platform to remain affixed to the vehicle, e.g. in normal use, and may also permit the platform to be detached from the vehicle as required. For example, the provision of rails, such as drawer runners, may permit such operation. Beneficially, such an arrangement would permit removal of the platform for cleaning or maintenance purposes, yet ensure that it is adequately affixed to the vehicle such that the platform is safe to use for storage, for weight bearing purposes, or for other purposes
The platform may be moveable, relative to at least part or all of the rest of the vehicle, between the first state and the second state. The platform may be adapted to transition between the first state and the second state, e.g. by manual operation or by powered operation. Such powered operation may comprise use of electrical motors and/or hydraulic or pneumatic cylinders, pistons or pumps. Beneficially, a user may push/pull the platform between the first and second states, from a position inside or outside the vehicle, which may simplify and/or minimise the effort required to control the position of the platform.
The platform may be configurable between the first or second state and a third state, wherein in the third state the platform may be in a stowed position. In the third, stowed position, the platform may be positioned such that not only the platform, but items, such as appliances, that are located on or affixed to the platform may also be stowed.
The platform may be configured for access by a user positioned inside the vehicle when the platform is in the third state. Beneficially, such an arrangement permits access to items, such as appliances, that are located on or affixed to the platform when in the stowed position. As such, the items/appliances may be accessed without the need of configuring or reconfiguring the platform, and/or without the platform being adapted to a first or second state wherein the platform may intrude into living space further than is necessary. The third state may be comprised in or a sub- state of the second state.
In the stowed position, the platform may be obscured from sight by a user positioned inside the vehicle by an internal panel. As such, the induction hob may be concealed when not in use. The internal panel may be affixed to the platform. Alternatively, the internal panel may be affixed to the living accommodation. The panel may be mounted on hinges, such that in use the panel may be moved or opened to
permit access to the platform by a user positioned inside the vehicle. The panel may be configured to slide, roll, swivel, pivot, flip, swing or the likes, between a position in which the platform may be obscured from sight by a user positioned inside the vehicle and a position in which the platform may be seen and/or accessed by a user positioned inside the vehicle.
The platform may be a table-top. The platform may be a base member of a drawer and, as such, the platform may be suitable for locating items to be concealed when not in use.
The platform may be adapted for sliding, rolling, swivelling, flipping or pivoting between the first and/or second and/or third states. The platform may be adapted to retract from the first state to the second or third state, and vice versa. The platform may be adapted for transitioning between the first and second or third states by an operator positioned inside and/or outside of the vehicle.
The platform may be adapted for transitioning between the first and a fourth state, wherein in the fourth state the height of the platform relative to the vehicle may be lower than the height of the platform relative to the vehicle in the first state. Beneficially, such a provision permits easier access to the platform, or to items located on or affixed to the platform by a user, when the user is positioned outside the vehicle. For example, a platform adapted to house a cooking appliance may, in the second or third state, be located at a defined height relative to the interior floor or floor plan of the vehicle. Since the floor, or floor plan of the vehicle is generally located higher than the terrain upon which the vehicle is located, the platform in the second position may be at a height greater than the defined height relative to the interior floor or floor plan of the vehicle, thus restricting access to the platform.
When the platform is in the second or third state, the platform may be adapted to form a continuation of a work-surface, a worktop, a table top, a shelf, or the likes. As such, the platform may be adapted to be aesthetically pleasing, and/or to serve the dual purpose of a moveable platform and/or a work-surface, a worktop, a table top, a shelf, or the likes.
The platform may be adapted to be selectively locked and/or affixed in any of the first, second, third or fourth states. Beneficially, such an arrangement may ensure the platform does not move during movement of the vehicle. Further, such a provision may enhance the security of the vehicle, in particular by ensuring that the platform may not be accessed from an exterior of the vehicle without the platform being unlocked. Such a lock may reside and/or be operable from inside and/or outside the vehicle.
The platform may be adapted to move horizontally, vertically, diagonally, or in an arcuate or tortuous path between the positions of the first and/or second and/or third and/or fourth state.
The platform may comprise a heat-proofed material and/or a fire-retardant material. Beneficially, such a platform may be adapted for use for cooking, and in particular for accommodating cooking appliances such as a cooker and/or a hob.
The land vehicle may comprise an exterior panel, wherein the exterior panel may be adapted to be moveable, e.g. relative to the rest of the vehicle, between a first, closed state and a second, open state. When the exterior panel is in the second state, the platform may be accessible by a user positioned outside the vehicle. When the exterior panel is in the first state, the platform may cover or enclose the platform and/or be flush with an exterior of the vehicle. The exterior panel may be affixed to or coupled with the platform. Alternatively, the exterior panel may be affixed to or coupled to an exterior of the vehicle such that, in use, the panel may be moved or opened to provide access to the platform by a user positioned outside the vehicle. The panel may be fixedly attached to the vehicle by means of hinges, rails, or the likes. The provision of such an exterior panel may improve the appearance of the vehicle and/or platform, especially when viewed from an exterior of the vehicle. The exterior panel may also serve to improve aerodynamics of the vehicle, and reduce the likelihood of intrusion of water or unwanted materials, such as dirt, into the vehicle. The exterior panel and/or the vehicle may comprise a seal such that, in the first, closed state, the exterior panel forms a seal, such as a water-tight seal, with an exterior of the vehicle.
The platform may comprise or be adapted to accommodate or receive at least one domestic appliance, such as a cooker and/or a hob, for example an induction hob. The platform may comprise a recess and/or void suitable for housing a domestic appliance, such as a cooker and/or a hob, for example an induction hob. The provision of an induction hob on the moveable platform is beneficial because there is no requirement to implement gas piping to the hob, which may be problematic to implement on a moveable platform, in particular in compliance with the relevant regulations relating to the use of gas.
The vehicle may comprise a hybrid vehicle drivetrain; and a power source adapted to supply power to domestic appliances, and wherein the power source may be electrically connected to the hybrid vehicle drivetrain. The vehicle may be or comprise a vehicle according to the first aspect.
The power source may be configurable for use when the vehicle is not operatively associated with a further power source located external to the vehicle. The power source may be adapted to provide power to a domestic appliance accommodated by the platform when the platform is in the first and/or second and/or third state and/or fourth state. The power source may be adapted to provide power to a domestic appliance accommodated by the platform as the platform transitions between any of the first, second, third or fourth states.
The platform may comprise at least one domestic electrical socket, wherein the at least one domestic electrical socket is directly or indirectly electrically connected to the power supply. An appliance, e.g. the domestic appliance, located on or situated on or within the platform may be directly (e.g. hard wired) or indirectly electrically connected to the power supply.
According to a fifth aspect of the present invention there is provided a platform suitable for use in a land vehicle comprising living accommodation, wherein the platform is attached or attachable or mounted or mountable to the vehicle, wherein at least part of the platform is configured to be moveable or configurable between at a first state in which at least a portion of the platform protrudes from the vehicle; and a second state in which the platform does not protrude from the vehicle. The platform may be accessible by a user positioned outside the vehicle when the platform is in the first state. The platform may be configured for access by a user positioned inside the vehicle when the platform is in the second state.
According to a sixth aspect of the present invention there is provided a method of use of a platform in a land vehicle comprising living accommodation, wherein the platform is attached to the vehicle, wherein the method comprises the step of: transitioning the platform between a first state in which at least a portion of the platform protrudes from the vehicle and a second state in which the platform does not protrude from the vehicle. The platform may be accessible (or only accessible) by a user positioned outside the vehicle when the platform is in the first state. The platform may be accessible (or only accessible) by a user positioned inside the vehicle when the platform is in the second state.
The land vehicle may be a vehicle according to the fourth and/or first aspect. According to a seventh aspect of the present invention, there is provided a method of use of a land vehicle comprising living accommodation, wherein the vehicle further comprises a platform attached to the vehicle, wherein the method comprises the step of transitioning the platform between a first state in which at least a portion of the
platform protrudes from the vehicle and a second state in which the platform does not protrude from the vehicle.
According to an eighth aspect of the present invention, there is provided a method of manufacture of a platform suitable for use in a land vehicle comprising living accommodation, wherein the method comprises the step of: providing a platform which is mountable or attachable to the vehicle, configuring the platform such that the platform is moveable or configurable between at a first state in which at least a portion of the platform protrudes from the vehicle, and a second state in which the platform does not protrude from the vehicle. The platform may be configured such that, when mounted or attached to the vehicle, it is accessible (or only accessible) by a user positioned outside the vehicle when the platform is in the first state and accessible (or only accessible) by a user positioned inside the vehicle when the platform is in the second state.
According to a ninth aspect of the present invention, there is provided a method of manufacture of a land vehicle comprising living accommodation, wherein the method comprises the step of attaching or mounting a platform to the vehicle, wherein at least a part of the platform is moveable or configurable between at a first state in which at least a portion of the platform protrudes from the vehicle; and a second state in which the platform does not protrude from the vehicle. The platform may be accessible (or only accessible) by a user positioned outside the vehicle when the platform is in the first state and accessible (or only accessible) by a user positioned inside the vehicle when the platform is in the second state.
The vehicle may be a vehicle according to the fourth and/or first aspect.
According to a tenth aspect of the present invention, there is provided a furniture member or insert for a land vehicle that comprises living accommodation wherein the furniture member or insert, when in a first position, is usable or configured as a shelf or surface or is configured to expose a first surface, and wherein the insert, when in a second position, is stowed within the land vehicle and/or configured such that the first surface is hidden or covered.
The land vehicle may comprise a bed, or seat-bed, configurable as a bed and/or at least one seat or bench.
The first surface may be an upper surface of the furniture member or insert.
The furniture member or insert may be adapted to be slideable or moveable between the first position and the second position. The furniture member or insert may be adapted to be pulled and/or pushed between the first and second positions. The furniture insert may be adapted for movement between the first position and the second positon along a guide or retaining member. The furniture insert may be adapted to be moved between the first position and the second position along a substantially vertical path. Alternatively, and/or additionally, the furniture insert may be adapted to be moved between the first position and the second position along an arcuate path, such as the path followed by a swivelling, rolling, hinging, flipping or rotating movement, or the likes. Alternatively, and/or additionally, the furniture insert may be adapted to be moved between the first position and the second position along a substantially horizontal path, such as the path followed by a sliding movement, or the likes. Alternatively, and/or additionally, the furniture insert may be adapted to be moved between the first position and the second position along tortuous path.
The first position may be a lower position. The second position may be an upper or raised position. The first position may be lower than the second position. Alternatively, the first and second positions may be located at substantially a same height relative to one another.
In the first position the furniture member or insert may be arranged to cover part of a bed, a bed-cushion, or seating and in a second position the furniture member or insert may be arranged to uncover the bed, bed-cushion, or seating so that the bed, bed-cushion, or seating may be accessible and/or useable. In the second position, the furniture member or insert may be spaced apart, e.g. spaced above, the bed, bed- cushion or seating.
The bed-cushion may be of a defined thickness such that, when the bed, or seat-bed, is arranged as a bed, an upper surface of the bed cushion is at substantially a same height, relative to the vehicle, as an upper surface of the bed. That is, the upper surface of the bed-cushion may be substantially level with an upper surface of the bed. As such, in use, the bed-cushion serves as an extension of the seat-bed, thus beneficially providing additional width to the bed and comfort to the user.
When in the second position, the furniture member or insert (and/or the first surface thereof) may abut or be adjacent to an underside of a structure such as a worktop, work-surface or piece of furniture.
The furniture member or insert may comprise a lip or raised section arranged along at least a portion of an edge of the insert. Such a lip or raised portion may permit the insert to operate as a shelf in the first position, whereby items may be prevented from sliding or rolling from the surface of the insert. This may be of particular benefit when the vehicle is moving and/or when the vehicle is parked on an uneven surface.
The furniture member or insert may comprise a barrier or plate arranged substantially orthogonal to an upper surface of an upper section of the furniture member or insert, the barrier or plate arranged along at least a portion of the edge of the furniture member or insert. The provision of a barrier or plate may beneficially serve to protect an edge of a surface, such as a table-top or work-top, to which the furniture member or insert is connected in the second position.
When in the second position, the furniture member or insert may be located within a storage area, and/or in a stowed position.
The first surface may be an upper surface of an upper section of the furniture member or insert.
At least a portion of the furniture member or insert (e.g. the first surface) may be substantially planar, such that it may be suitable for use as a shelf in the first position. The upper surface of the upper section of the furniture member or insert may comprise at least one recessed portion. The furniture member or insert may comprise at least one fixing mechanism. The fixing mechanism may preferably comprise a magnet but may alternatively comprise another suitable fixing mechanism, such as a catch or the like. The at least one fixing mechanism (e.g. the magnet) may be fixedly attached to, or provided within, the at least one recessed portion. Beneficially, the provision of such recessed portions may permit the magnets to be substantially flush, and/or embedded within, the first surface of the furniture member or insert.
An upper edge of the lip or raised section may be substantially flush with an upper surface of the work-top. An inner face or the lip or raised section (that is, a face facing towards the work-top) may be substantially flush with an outer edge of the worktop.
The insert may have no sharp corners, thus minimising the chances that a user may be injured when moving the insert between designated positions.
The land vehicle may comprise a cooperating mechanism, e.g. for electively cooperating with the fixing mechanism, e.g. to selectively secure the furniture member or insert. The cooperating mechanism may be provided on the structure, e.g. such as an undersurface of the structure (e.g. the worktop or work-surface or piece of furniture). The cooperating mechanism may comprise further magnets and/or a metal element, such as a ferrous metal element, which may be arranged such that the furniture member or insert may be magnetically affixed to the land vehicle (e.g. to the structure, such as the undersurface of the structure) in the second position. The structure may be or comprise furniture, and/or kitchen fittings, such as cupboards and/or work-tops.
The provision of magnets may be of benefit because it may permit a simple configuration or reconfiguration of the insert between first and second positions, and requires minimal force.
The furniture member or insert may comprise a lower section, wherein the lower section may comprise a pliant or deformable material. The pliant or deformable material may comprise foam or the likes, and/or wherein the pliant or deformable material may be upholstered. The lower section of the furniture member or insert may be a cushion. A lower surface of the upper section may be upholstered. Beneficially, when the furniture member or insert is located in the second position, and the bed or seat-bed is configured as a bed, the provision of a pliant material on the lower surface serves to prevent possible injury to a person using the bed.
The lower section may be substantially thicker than the upper section. The lower section may be of a defined thickness such that, when the insert is located in the
first position, an upper surface of the upper section is not lower, relative to the vehicle, than an upper surface of a seat of the bed, or seat-bed, when the bed, or seat-bed, is configured as a seat.
A lower surface of the upper section of the furniture member or insert (e.g. the planar part) may be fixedly attached to an upper surface of the lower section (e.g. the pliant or deformable material). A lower surface of the upper section may be removably attached to an upper surface of the lower section, such that the pliant material of the lower section may be removable, for washing, replacement, maintenance, or otherwise.
A lower surface of the lower section may comprise at least one section of a component of a hook and loop fastener. Beneficially, such an arrangement permits the insert to be affixed to a further cushion. The further cushion may be a part of the bed, and may be a bed-cushion. In particular, in a preferred arrangement, the hook portion of the hook and loop fastener is affixed to the insert and the loop portion of the hook and look fastener is affixed to the further cushion. Such an arrangement beneficially ensures that the hook-and loop fastener does not negatively impact the comfort of a person using the bed.
The upper section may comprise a rigid material, such as plywood, hardwood, metal or the likes. The upper surface of the upper section may be smooth and/or polished and/or laminated.
