Duolingo is the world's most popular way to learn a language.

About us

Our mission is to develop the best education in the world and make it universally available. Duolingo is the most downloaded education app in the history of the App Store and in 2019 became the top-grossing education app worldwide. We set out to do something altogether different in the learning space. Learning a new language is hard; we believe it should be fun. We use bite-sized lessons that feel like playing a game to keep our learners motivated. Learning a new language can also be expensive, and because we believe it should be free, we made it so. Duolingo has been named to: BuiltIn's Best Places to Work (2023), Fast Company Best Workplaces for Innovators (2022), Fast Company 10 Most Innovative Education Company (2022), among others.

  • Lots of companies claim to have unlimited PTO, but is the PTO 𝘢𝘤𝘵𝘶𝘢𝘭𝘭𝘺 unlimited? Many feel guilty or judged by their colleagues for taking “too much” of their “unlimited” PTO. And of course, PTO is still subject to manager approval, which does put a limit on what is allegedly unlimited. We don't have unlimited PTO, but we do hit over 90% of all PTO days actually getting used. Because we actually want Duos (our employees) to take their PTO (and more importantly, feel good while doing it!) we remove the ambiguity by giving them:  • 20 days of PTO (25 days after 5 years of tenure)  • 7 paid company holidays  • 2 weeks of winter break This means Duos get roughly two months off each year! That’s plenty of time to sail away on an adventure guilt-free.

Hundreds of people have moved to Pittsburgh for Duolingo. And we paid for each of their relocation, regardless of their role or level. Why? Because it’s the right thing to do. Many companies make relo amounts higher for senior hires. But we have another take: relocation should NOT be based on level. That’s why we use a more equitable way to determine relocation, considering distance and number of people moving. Fun fact: we even once helped with the relocation of a 🐴 horse (with its owner obviously). What are your thoughts on paying for relocation?

  • Since day one, Duolingo has set aside an hour for our Duos (employees) to have lunch together. Every. Day. From 12:30 to 1:30pm, meetings pause, desks are abandoned, and everyone gathers for a communal meal. The hour is sacred, and infused into our company culture from the top down. Our founders Luis von Ahn and Severin Hacker don’t want people thinking they need to be glued to their desks to somehow prove they’re working hard. Performative action has no place here. 🙅♀️ This is only one of many things that makes Duolingo truly special, and we’re particularly proud of this tradition! 💚

  • Benefits are not an obligation at Duolingo. They are incredibly important to us because they are designed around our Duos’ (employees) needs AND they help the world. That’s why our employees actually use our benefits! Here are four mission-driven benefits we are proud of: 🏡 Mortgage Benefit: A $10k bonus to Duos who purchase their first house in Pittsburgh. We don’t want to turn Pittsburgh into a renters’ market. We want to invest in and give back to our community. 🚲 Transportation Benefit: If you take an alternative method of transportation to work, like public transportation, biking, or skateboarding, you receive a $1,200 annual, pre-tax stipend. This helps encourage our Duos to make a green choice. 🎗️ Donation match: We want to support the causes that are important to our Duos, which is why we match donations to any organization up to $1,000 per calendar year! 🌍 DuoTrips: An all-expenses paid trip (and week off work!) for Duos who complete our internal Language Challenge. We do these trips to deepen the connection to our mission, each other, and our learners. Current DuoTrips are to Paris, Mexico City, Berlin, and Beijing! Which one stands out the most to you?
