Abstract

본 발명은 표시 장치용 후광 장치부에 관한 것으로서, 여러 개의 홈이 있는 몰드 틀의 중앙에 도광판이 장착되어 있고 몰드 틀의 상측 홈에는 가로 방향으로 광원이 장착되어 있다. 도광판의 측면에는 그 일부가 둥근 돌기부가 형성되어 있고 몰드 틀의 측면에는 돌기부의 형태에 대응되는 홈이 형성되어 있다. 또한, 도광판의 위에는 도광판과 구조가 동일한 확산막 및 프리즘 시트 등이 얹혀져 있다.
본 발명에 따른 도광판의 돌기부 구조는 도광판의 돌기부를 몰드 틀의 홈에 고정시키기 때문에 도광판의 이동에 따른 광원의 파손을 막아줄 뿐만 아니라, 돌기부의 구조가 둥글게 처리되었기 때문에 광원으로부터의 빛이 도광판 내부의 특정 부분에서 고이는 현상을 막아주는 효과가 있다.

본 발명은 표시 장치에 관한 것으로서, 더욱 상세하게는 후광 장치부의 도광판 구조에 관한 것이다.
일반적으로 모든 정보 표시는 그 기능을 수행하기 위해 각 화소에서 빛을 제어한다. 빛을 제어하는 두 가지 방법에는 능동 표시(active display)와 수동 표시(passive display)가 있다. 각각의 화소가 빛을 발생할 수 있는 능력을 갖도록 하는 능동 표시에는 음극선관(cathode-ray tube : CRT)과 발광 다이오드(light-emitting diode : LED)가 있으며, 외부 광원으로부터의 빛을 필요로 하는 수동 표시에는 액정 표시가 가장 대표적이다.
수동 표시 장치용 후광 장치는 표시 장치의 기판이 화상 정보를 표시할 수 있도록 기판에 빛을 비추는 장치로서, 광원, 도광판, 반사판, 확산판의 기본 구조를 갖는다. 확산판의 상부에는 기판이 장착되어 있어서 후광 장치의 광원에서 발생한 빛이 도광판과 확산판을 거쳐 기판에 전달된다. 기판 및 후광 장치를 지지하고 보호하기 위해 외곽에는 몰드 틀(mold frame)과 탑 섀시(top chassis)가 설치된다.
그러면 첨부한 도면을 참고로 하여 액정 표시 장치의 후광 장치부에 대하여 더욱 상세하게 설명한다.
제1도는 일반적인 액정 표시 장치 모듈(module)을 나타낸 평면도이고, 제2도는 액정 표시 장치 모듈의 단면도이고, 제3도는 종래의 기술에 따른 후광 장치부의 평면도이고, 제4도는 제3도의 A 부분에서의 빛고임 현상을 나타낸 도면이다.
제1도에 도시한 바와 같이, 액정 표시 장치의 화상이 구현되는 구역은 실제로 점선으로 표시된 내부 영역이다. 이 영역을 활성 영역(active area)이라 하며 활성 영역의 바깥은 탑 섀시(8)로 둘러 덮여 있다. 최근에 와서는 모듈의 끝단인 탑 섀시(8)로부터 활성 영역까지의 거리(a)가 점점 좁아지는 경향이 있다. 결과적으로 표시 장치의 내부 구조 또한 변화하게 되었다.
이러한 액정 표시 장치 모듈의 내부 단면 구조는 제2도에 도시한 바와 같다.
빛을 전달하는 도광판(2)이 있고 그 위에 빛의 확산을 돕는 2장의 시트(3)가 놓이며 그 위에는 박막 트랜지스터 기판(4)과 컬러 필터 기판(5)이 놓여 있다. 박막 트랜지스터 기판(4)의 측면으로는 탭 아이시(7)가 장착된 PCB 기판(6)이 연결되어 있다. 이러한 장치들은 몰드 틀(1)의 홈에 장착되며 탑 섀시(8)가 몰드 틀(1)과 측면에서 결합되어 기판(5) 및 후광부를 지지하고 보호한다.
모듈 크기가 작아지고, a의 폭이 좁아짐에 따라 몰드 틀(1)의 내측면에서 활성 영역까지의 거리(b) 또한 좁아지는 경향이 있다.
탑 섀시(5)와 기판(4, 5)들을 들어낸 내부 구조가 제3도에 나타나 있다.
제3도에 도시한 바와 같이, 몰드 틀(1)의 가장자리에는 광원 및 도광판, PCB 기판 등이 장착될 수 있도록 홈이 형성되어 있다. 몰드 틀(1)의 중앙에는 도광판(2)이 장착되고 그 한 쪽 측면에는 가로 방향으로 광원(9)이 장착되어 있다. 도광판(2)은 광원(9)으로부터 빛을 받아서 기판쪽으로 빛을 보내주는 역할을 하므로 어떠한 경계도 없이 직접 광원(9)과 접해 있다. 따라서, 외부의 진동이나 충격에 의해 광원(9)이 파손될 우려가 있다. 도광판(2)이 광원(9)쪽으로 움직이는 것을 막기 위해, 광원(9)이 형성되어 있는 쪽과 수직한 측변의 몰드 틀(1)에 오목한 부분을 두어 도광판(2)의 돌기부 A와 고정시킨다.
그러나, 제4도에 도시한 바와 같이 각이 진 도광판(2)의 돌기부 구조는 빛고임 현상을 발생시킨다.
광원(9)으로부터 전달된 빛이 도광판(2) 돌기부(A)의 가장자리에 도달하면 빛의 일부는 반사되고 일부는 도광판(2)을 통과한다. 통과된 빛은 공기층(C)을 거쳐 몰드 틀(1)에 도달한 후 다시 반사되어 도광판(2)의 바깥면에 전달된다. 도광판(2)의 바깥면에 도달한 빛의 일부는 다시 도광판(2)의 바깥면에서 공기층(C)으로 반사되고 나머지 일부는 도광판(2)내로 투과되어 들어오게 된다. 도광판(2)의 구조가 각이 진 이러한 구조에서는, 도광판(2)과 몰드 틀(1)의 경계에서 연속적으로 반사되고 투과된 빛이 도광판(2)내로 들어올 때 도광판(2) 돌기부(A)의 모퉁이에서는 광선들이 서로 모이는 형태로 진행한다.
따라서 도광판(2) 돌기부(A)의 모퉁이가 다른 영역 보다 많은 양의 빛이 고이게 된다. 특히, 모듈에서 활성 영역까지의 거리 a가 좁아진 이러한 구조에서는 빛고임 현상이 눈에 쉽게 드러난다. 결과적으로, 기판에 다른 영역 보다 특별히 밝은 영역이 형성되어 제품의 질이 저하된다.
본 발명의 목적은 이러한 문제점을 해결하기 위한 것으로서, 빛고임 현상을 제거하는 도광판 구조를 구현하는 데에 있다.
이러한 목적을 달성하기 위한 본 발명에 따른 액정 표시 장치용 몰드 틀은 광원이 결합되는 수단, 적어도 하나의 모서리가 둥글게 처리된 돌기부를 가진 빛의 이동 통로로서의 도광판이 결합되는 수단, 돌기부의 형태와 대응하는 형태로 형성되어 있고 상기 도광판을 고정하는 수단을 포함한다. 홈의 형태로 형성되어 있는 고정 수단의 광원 쪽 모서리는 각이 지고 광원과 먼 쪽은 둥글게 표시되어 있거나 전체적으로 완만하게 형성되어 있다.
또한 액정 표시 장치용 도광판은 돌기부를 포함하며 이 돌기부는 몰드 틀의 홈에 대응된다. 도광판이 움직이지 않도록 돌기부는 홈에 고정되는데 도광판에 형성되어 있는 돌기부의 모서리의 일부는 둥글게 형성되어 있다.
액정 표시 장치용 후광 장치부는 광원으로부터의 빛을 표시 기판에 전달하며 적어도 하나의 둥근 모서리를 가진 돌기부를 가지고 있는 도광판, 광원이 가로 방향으로 장착되고 광원의 측면에 도광판이 장착되며 돌기부에 해당하는 홈을 가지고 있는 몰드 틀을 포함한다.
도광판의 돌기부는 몰드 틀의 홈과 세로 변에서 고정되어 있으며 도광판의 위에는 도광판과 구조가 동일한 확산막 및 프리즘 시트 등이 얹혀져 있다.
본 발명에 따른 도광판의 돌기부 구조는 도광판의 돌기부를 몰드 틀의 홈에 고정시키기 때문에 도광판의 이동에 따른 광원의 파손을 막아줄 뿐만 아니라, 돌기부의 구조가 둥글게 처리되었기 때문에 광원으로부터의 빛이 도광판 내부의 특정 부분에서 고이는 현상을 막아준다.
그러면, 첨부한 도면을 참고로 하여 본 발명에 따른 액정 표시 장치의 후광 장치부의 실시예에 대하여 본 발명이 속하는 기술 분야에서 통상의 지식을 가진 자가 용이하게 실시할 수 있을 정도로 상세히 설명한다.
제5도는 본 발명의 실시예에 따른 액정 표시 장치의 도광부 구조를 나타낸 것이다.
본 발명의 실시예에 따른 액정 표시 장치용 후광부 구조는 제3도에 도시한 종래의 후광부 구조와 크게 다르지 않다. 종래의 구조와 다른 부분이 제5도에 도시되어 있다.
제5도에 도시한 바와 같이, 몰드 틀(1)의 세로 변에 오목한 홈이 형성되어 있고 그 홈에 도광판(2)의 돌기부가 장착되어 있다. 도광판(2) 돌기부의 일부 및 몰드 틀(1)의 홈은 둥글게 처리되어 있다. 이러한 도광판(2) 위에 동일한 구조를 가지는 확산판 및 프리즘 시트(제2도의 도면 부호 3)가 얹혀져 있다. 효과적으로 빛고임 현상을 줄이기 위해서는 광원(제3도의 도면 부호 9)과 먼 쪽에 위치한 돌기부의 부분을 둥글게 처리해야 한다. 광원(제3도의 도면 부호 9)이 윗쪽에 위치한다고 가정했을 때, 윗 부분은 각이 지고 아래 부분은 둥근 형태의 돌기부 또는 전체적으로 완만한 곡선을 갖는 돌기부 형태가 가능하다.
광원(제3도의 도면 부호 9)으로부터 나온 빛이 도광판(2) 돌기부의 경계에 도달하면 일부는 도광판(2)내로 반사되고 일부는 공기층(C)으로 투과된다. 공기층(C)을 거쳐 몰드 틀(1)의 경계에 도달한 빛은 다시 반사되어 도광판(2)의 바깥 경계면에 도달한다. 공기층(C)과 도광판(2)의 경계면에서는 항상 반사와 투과가 동시에 일어난다. 도광판(2) 돌기부의 일부가 둥근 이러한 구조에서는 도광판(2)내로 들어온 빛이 흩어지는 형태로 진행하므로 빛이 모이지 않을 뿐만 아니라, 도광판을 투과해 나가는 빛과 투과된 빛이 몰드 틀(1)에서 반사되어 다시 도광판(2)으로 들어오는 빛의 양 자체를 감소시켜줌으로 돌기부에서의 빛고임 현상을 제거하는 효과가 있다.
이상에서와 같이, 본 발명에 따른 표시 장치의 후광부 구조는 도광판의 돌기부의 일부를 둥글게 처리함으로써 광원으로부터 오는 빛이 한 곳에 모이는 현상을 막아 액정 표시 장치의 화질을 좋게 하는 효과가 있다.

Claims (12)

  1. 광원이 결합되는 수단, 적어도 하나의 모서리가 둥글게 처리된 돌기부를 가진 빛의 이동통로로서의 도광판이 결합되는 수단, 상기 돌기부의 형태와 대응하는 형태로 형성되어 있고 상기 도광판을 고정하는 수단을 포함하는 표시 장치용 몰드 틀.
  2. 제1항에서, 상기 고정 수단은 홈의 형태인 표시 장치용 몰드 틀.
  3. 제2항에서, 상기 고정 수단은 상기 광원 쪽 모서리는 각이 지고 상기 광원과 먼쪽은 둥글게 처리되어 있는 표시 장치용 몰드 틀.
  4. 제2항에서, 상기 고정 수단의 모서리는 전체적으로 완만하게 형성되어 있는 표시 장치용 몰드 틀.
  5. 표시 기판 및 광원이 장착되는 몰드 틀에 형성되어 있는 홈에 장착되며 상기 광원으로부터 빛을 상기 표시 기판에 전달하는 도광판으로서, 상기 몰드 틀은 상기 도광판의 이동을 방지하는 홈을 가지고 있고, 상기 도광판은 상기 홈에 대응되는 형태의 돌기부를 포함하고 있으며 상기 돌기부의 모서리 중 적어도 하나는 둥글게 형성되어 있는 표시 장치용 도광판.
  6. 제5항에서, 상기 돌기부는 상기 광원과 가까운 쪽은 각이 지고 먼 쪽은 둥근 형태를 가지는 표시 장치용 몰드 도광판.
  7. 제6항에서, 상기 돌기부는 전체적으로 곡선의 형태를 가지고 있는 표시 장치용 도광판.
  8. 광원으로부터 빛을 표시 기판에 전달하며 적어도 하나의 둥근 모서리를 가진 돌기부를 가지고 있는 도광판. 상기 광원이 가로 방향으로 장착되고 상기 광원의 측면에 도광판이 장착되며 상기 돌기부와 대응되는 홈을 가지고 있는 몰드 틀을 포함하는 표시 장치용 후광 장치부.
  9. 제8항에서, 상기 도광판의 돌기부는 상기 몰드 틀의 홈과 세로 변에서 고정되는 표시 장치용 후광 장치부.
  10. 제9항에서, 상기 돌기부는 상기 광원과 가까운 모서리는 각이 지고 먼 쪽 모서리는 둥근 형태를 가지는 표시 장치용 후광 장치부.
  11. 제9항에서, 상기 돌기부는 전체적으로 완만한 곡선의 형태를 가지고 있는 표시 장치용 후광 장치부.
