Description

H. A. MARTIN.
Paltented July 24. 1866.
Plow;
' N.PETERS, PHOTO Ln'uucnwna. WASHINGTON n c UNITED STATES PATENT. OFFICE.
HUBBARD A. MARTIN, OF JEFFERSONVILLETNDIANA.
l M PROVEM ENT IN PLOWS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 56,584, dated July 24, 1866.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HUBBARD A. MARTIN, of Jefi'ersonville, in the county of Clarke and State of Indiana, have invented a new and Improved Plow; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a bottom view or an inverted plan of my invention. Fig. 2 is a side view of the same; Fig. 3, a plan or top View of the front part of the beam of the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate like parts.
This invention relates to a new and improved plow of that class in which metal is wholly used in the construction. The object of the the beam and catching over a crossbar connected with the mold-hoard and land-si(le. The clevis is also arranged and applied to the beam in a novel manner, so as to admit of a ready adjustment, according to the width of furrow-slice required to be turned over.
A represents the beam of the plow, constructed of an gle-iron and rolled or swaged so as to be curved longitudinally, similar to the ordinary wooden plow-beams-in use.
B B are the handles, constructed of flat bars of wrought-iron, bent or curved in the usual form, and attached, one, B, at its lower end to the rear end of the land-side O of the plow, and passing through a slot or opening in the beam A. The lower end of the other handle, B, is secured by rivets or bolts to the inner side of the rear part of the mold-board a of the plow. This mold-board may be of the usual or any proper form, constructed of steel, wrought or cast iron, and provided with a land-side, C. To the inner side of the mold-board there is riveted a wrought-iron angle-bar, D, the upper end of which is bent to form lips b, which fit snugly against the under side of the beam, and are secured to it by rivets or bolts 0.
E represents a wroughtiron rod which passes through the beam A just in front of the upper end of the mold-board, and through the upper end of the angle-bar D, and extends down at the rear side of said bar. is bent in hook form at its lower end, and catches over a bar, F, one end of which is bolted to the inner side of the mold-board and the opposite end to the inner side of the land-side G. This rod E has a head, d, on its upper end, and it will be seen that it braces the beam and plow. The two handles B B are connected by rods G.
11 represents a clevis, which is secured bya pivot-bolt, a, to the beam, and may be constructed similarly to those in present use, with the exception that its upper plate, 0, terminates in a point to fit into any of a series of notches, f, in the front edge of a plate, g, attached to the beam. By slipping up the upper plate, 0, which is elastic, its rear end may be fitted in any one of the notches f, and more or less land "given the plow, as may be required.
This plow may be constructed at a small cost, and will be light and durable.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. The wrought-iron an gle-beam A,conneeted to the mold-board a by the angle-bar D and the rod E, all constructed and arranged substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. The clevis H, provided with an upper elastic plate, 6, in combination with the notched plate g, attached to the beam, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
3. The Wrought-iron handles B B, in combination with the angle-beam A, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
H. A. MARTIN.
