Description

A. F, STlLLWELL.
Cultivator.
I Patented Sept. 4,1866 v UNITED STATES PATENT AQFFICE.
ADDISON F. STILLWELL, OF FAYETTE, IOWA.
IMPROVEMENT IN CULTIVATORS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 57,792, dated September 4, 1866.
To all whom it may concern: 7
Be it known that I, ADDISON F. STILLWELL, of Fayette, in the county of Fayette and State of Iowa, have invented a new and Improved Cultivator; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of my invention; Fig. 2, a detached vertical section of one of the standards and plows pertaining to the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate like parts.
This invention consists in a novel manner of arranging the front plows of the device, whereby the plows may be adjusted to perform different kinds of work, as required.
Arepresents the beam of the cultivator, provided with handles B B, and O is a standard secured to the rear end of the beam A, and
having a plow, D, at its lower end.
E represents a metal bar, which is secured to the plow-beam A in aposition transversely therewith by means of a clip, F. The ends of the bar E are curved or bent downward,
' and have Ts or cross-bars G at their lower ends, the bottoms of which are of curved or segment form.
H H represent wooden standards, which are secured to the bent ends of the bar E by bolts a, and I I are bars secured to the front sides of the bent ends of the bar E by the bolts to, the latter passing through the upper ends of I.
The bars I have pins or projections 12 at their inner sides, which fit in any of a series of indentations, 0, made inthe front sides of Ts or cross-bars G, the indentations being made in the arc of a circle of which the bolts to are at the center. (See Fig. 1.)
J represents the shares, which are secured to the standards H H by pivot-bolts d. The
,more or less pointed, or into horizontal-edged shares to act more like scrapers; and the .shares may also be reversed-that is to say,
changed in position on the standards, the righthand one placed on the left-hand one, and vice versa.
The bars I at their lower ends are secured in position by brace-rods K, the front ends of which are attached to the beam A, and the rear ends having screw-threads cut on them, on which jam-nuts g are placed, one at the front sides of the bars I and the other at the rear sides of the standards, the bars I being prevented from casually slipping in consequence of the pins or projections b fitting in the indentations c in the Ts or cross-bars G.
The arrangement is extremely simple and efficient; and renders the device applicable for pulvrizing the ground or for eradicating weeds, (surface culture,) as may be required.
Having thus described my invention, I claimas new and desire to secure by Letters Patent-- The bar E, beam A, and cross-bars G, in combination with the bars I, projections b, spurs f, shares J, and brace-rods K, all arranged to operate as and for the purposes set forth. I
The above specification of my invention signed by me this 20th day of July, 1865.
, ADDISON F. STILLWELL.
