TO' ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:V
Be it known that I, HENRY SAUEEBIER, of Newark, in the-county of Essex, and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and improved Shoe-Knife; and that the following description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, hereinafter referred to, forms a full and exact specification of the same, wherein I have set forth the nature and principles of my said improvements, by which my invention muy be distinguished from all others of a. similar class, together with such parts as I claim, and desire to have secured to me by Letters Patent.
This invention relates to anew and improved knife for cutting or trimming the edges of the soles of boots and shoes. Y
The invention consists in the application of a sliding-guard or gauge to the blade of the knife, whereby the desired work may be accomplished without the liability of cutting the upper of the boot or shoe. In the accompanying sheet of drawings- Fig/ure 1 is a side view of my invention.
Figure 2, an edge view of the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate like parts.
A represents the blade, and B the handle of theknife. These parts may be constructed in the usual way, and therefore do not require especial description. C represents the guard o r gauge, the same being constructed of a metal pla-te, secured to the knife-blade by a setesorew, D,`whieh passes through an oblong slot, a, in the metal plate into the blade: The outer end of this pla-te is provided with a lip, In, which projects out at right angles from it, and has an oblique position in a direction transversely with the bla-de, as shown clearly in fig. 1. This lip b, when the knife is used, bears against the bottom of the sole, while the portion of the blade beyond it`outs the edge'of the sole, the plate being adjusted so that the lip b will be suieiently far from the end of the blade to allow the latter, beyond the lip, to cut the whole depth or thicknessof the sole all around its edge. The platte is bent or laps over the front edge of the blade, in order that the former may not be casually forced back when the knife is used.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Potent- The sliding or adjustable guard or gauge C, providedwith a lip, b, and turned-up edge, in combination with the blade of the knife, substantially as and for the purpose herein set forth.
HENRY SAUERBIER.'
