Description

@uiten tsee'gntrnt @Hirn HENRY SUERBIER, O F- NEWARK, NEW J'ERSE Y.
Letters Patent No. 69,491, dated rtocr l, 186i'.
IMPROVED SHOE-KNIFE.
TO ALL WIIOM I'l MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, HENRY SAUERBIER, of Newark, in the county of Essex, and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and improved Shoe-Knife, and that the followingdescription, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, hereinafter referred to, forins a full und exact specification of the sante, wherein I have set forth the nature and principles of my said improvemcntghy which my invention muy be distinguished from all others of a similar class, together with such parts as I claim, and desire to have secured to me by Letters Patent.
)This invention relates to' a new and improved knife for trimming the edges of the soles of boots and shoes, and has for its object the prevention of the casual cutting of the uppers while trimming or cutting the edges of the soles. i
rIhe invention consists in applying to the blade of the knife a pivoted guard, constructed with a lip to fit in the crease at thejunction of the upper-and sole, whereby the desired end is obtained, as hercinnfterfully shown and described. In the accompanying sheet of drawings"- Figure 1 is a side view of my invention.
Figure 2, a transverse section of the saine, taken in the line .fr .'11, fig. I.
Figure 3, an edge view of the blade and guard of the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate like parte.
A represents the blade, and B the handle of :t shocdmife. 'lhese parts may be constructed in the usual Way, and therefore dc not require a special description. C represents a. guard, one end of which is attached to one side of the blade A by a screw or pivot, tt. This guard is simply a fiat bar or plate, bread at its inner part, so as to be nearly equal in width to the blade, n`nd made narrow at its outer part, and having a lip, I1, al its outer end, which extends around the outer end of the blade A, and projects beyond the opposite side of th(I sume, so as to t in the crease et the `junction of the upper and sole of the boot or shoe. The narrow part of the guard, at the inner side of! lip b, is bevelled out, as shown at c, in order to admit of the free escape of the shavings or trimmings. The lip b, as the knife is used, effectually prevents the blade coming in Contact with the upper. In consequence of the guard being pivoted to the blade it may be moved back out of the `way when'- ever the blade requires to be sharpened. v
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters l :1tcnt The guard C, having the lip b at its outer end, when provided with the bevelled recess c, resting against the blade A, as and for the purpose set forth.
i HENRY SAUERBIER.
