Description

' @uiten tates stmt @fitta- IMPBOVBD WASHING MACHINE.
@the .Signale mmh tu in tigen Entert ntent mit making um at the sante.
TO AIiLAWHOM IT MAY CONGERN:
Be it known that I, GEORGE H. Krnlvngof Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga., and State of Ohio, have' invented certain new and useful improvements in Washing Machines; and I do herebydeelare that the follow. ing is a full and complete description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a part of this specification, in which l Figure lis a top view of the machine. 1Figure 2 is a. vertical section. Eigure 31's adetached view.
Like letters of reference refer to like parts in the views. -.In the-above figures, A represents the case or tub of the machine, which is of an oblong square form, and supported on legs A,'the bottom being inclined from each end toward the centre, as shown in iig. 2. Secured near'the centre of'the case, on a shaft, a, is the open cylinder B, which consists of the two end pieces b, connected-together by means ofthe ribs Yor bars B', extending from one tothe other of the said headpieces b.`
Under t'hisc'yliuder is hung tlieapron C, a top view of which, when detached, is shown in iig. 3. Secured inthe sidesot the tub is the bar or shaft D, towhich one end of the apron is hung, by means of the ropes or chansI, as hereafter shown. In the opposite endof the tub, extending from side to side, the same as the bar D, is a shaft, on which are placed thepullcys E. The apron C referred tois composed of blocks c, of the form represented, whiclrare connected together by means of cords I, on which they are strungin the order shown in fig. 3, the'cords passngf'throngh'the bar D, to which the apron is hung, the ends of the cords; passing over the pulleys E, abo'vc referred topto which ends are attached the weights F, the purpose of which is to draw the -apron close up against the clothes, thus pressing them firmly against the bars or rubbers of the cylinder. If
desired, springs mayb'ensed` in place of the weights above described. In the cylinder B one oil vthe ribs e' is made adjustable, one end slipping under'the loop d, and the otherend secured, when desired, by :means of the hobk e, iig. 1. v When the clothes are to be Washed they are secured to the cylinder by means of this adjustable rib, which is raised up, and one end of the piece to be washed placed under it. The rib is then put in place and securedasstated.4 This is so that the clothes can be rubbed on both sides. By turning the cylinder the cloth is brought between the apron and ribs of said cylinder, and thoroughly cleaned; then, by turningthe cylinder in the opposite direction ;v the other side ofthe cloth is rubbed. The apron.-being hung as stated, and composed of the i blocks strung on the cords as described, renders it adjustable. yIt' the clothes become packed between the apron and cylinder the pressure on the apron will raise the Weights, and thus allow the apron to be depressed. Thus` any cloth, large or small, can be washed easily, and the a-pr'on adapt itself to the variable thicknesses or size of said cloth.V If large the weights will be raised by the pressure on the apron, and thus give room betweenthe cylinder and apron for the clothes. By means of the blocks of this apron being strung on tbc cords as stated, the apron 'ls rendered flexible, and any part will be depressed, where the thickness of the clothes betweenl said a'Jrouv and cylinder may require. l i y I What I claim as my improvement, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination of the cords with the blocks when constructed and arranged in relation to each other so as to be interwoven or interlocking,` forming a continuous or entire connected apron, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. The arrangement of the apron C, in combination with the cylinder B, in the manner and for the puri pose substantially as specified.
GEORGE H. KIDNEY.
