Description

@uitrit gisten -atrltt @ffice GEORGE iv. SHEEEIELD, or WORCESTER, MASSACHUSETTS. Letters Patent No. 72,689, dated December 24, 1867.Y
IMPROVEMENT IN STEAM-GENERATORS.
KNOW ALL MEN BY THESE.PRESENTS:`
That I, GEORGE V. SHEFEIELD, of the city and county of Worcester, and Commonwealth of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fire-Injectors and Steam-Superheaters, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, iu whichf I Figure l represents a side view of my said fire-injector andsteam-sperheater, and
Figure 2 represents a vertical central section of thc {ire-chamber, fire-injector, and the shell of the boiler on one side.
To enable those skilled in the art to which my invention belongs to make and use the same, I will proceed to describe it more in'detail.
In the drawing, A represents a boiler, to the front of which is attached the {ire-*chamber B, divided bythe fire-grate C. There may be twodoors, one, a, through which the fuel is passed to the grate C, and one, b, through which the ashes, cinders, and other refuse matter, can be removed from the ash-pit E. Above the firechamber is placed the cylinder F, having a water-space or chamber, c, with which the pipe al, from the upper part ofthe boiler, communicates.A Within the cylinder F works the hollow piston-rod Gr,tc the bottom of which is attached the piston H, which may be packed inthe same manner as a steam-piston, or in any other desirable manner.
-Inthe bottom of the cylinder F is a valve, e, having flanges or projections, 1, which strike against the flange 2 when the piston is raised. A pipe, f, leads from the bottom of cylinder F into the boiler A, a ballvalve, 3, being properly arranged in the pipef, as shown in fig. 2. A pipe, I, also extends from the bottom of cylinderF,vdown through the re-chamber, into the ash-pit, the open end being turned un under the grate C, as shown in the drawings. A
The operation is'as follows: Fire beingibuilt or started upon the grate O, the draught is through the smokepipe J, which may communicate with a smoke-pipe, K, passing through the boiler A. The piston-rod G, being connected in any proper manner to the working partsof the engine, or shafting turned by the same, is caused to reciprocate, and, when the piston rises, the dame and heated gases from the fire are drawn up into the cylinder F, and, whenthe piston descends, the fire and gases are expelled, through the pipe f, into the water in the boiler, thus generating steam rapidly, and super-heating the steam as they pass up through it.
To facilitate the combustion, and otherwise contribute to the perfect action of the operation, a current of tire and heated gases ca'n be forced from cylinder F, and thrown under the re, by simply turning cock g. A
ball or other valve may be arranged in pipe I, to prevent air from entering the cylinder F, through pipe I, when piston H is raised.
Cylinder F.1na-y be arranged, in respect to the boiler, so that the chamber c willbe lled with water or steam, as may be preferred, to prevent cylinder F from being heated too much. The piston-rod Gr may also be connected, lby a flexible pipe or otherwise, with a steam or water-chamber, to keep that from being too highly heated.
By removing the stop t, the steam or water in chamber c can be drawn out. ANotches are made in the edges of the valve e, to allow the fire and heated -gases to pass up into the cylinder F when the piston rises, the valve having a vertical play in the bottom of the cylinder, as indicated inthe drawings.
Having described myfire-injector and steam-superheater, what I claim therein as new and of my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, isv 1. The combination, with the boiler or steam-generator and hre-chamber, of a fire-injector and steamsuperheater, under the arrangement described, whereby the flame and heated gases shall be taken from the firefchainber, hud forced or driven, under pressure, into the boiler or steam-generator, substantially as herein shown and set forth. y
E?. 'Ihe combination, with the cylinder F and refchamber G, ofthe chamber c, piston H, fire-pipes I andf,
substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
GEORGE V. SHEFFIELD.
