Definitions

  • This invention relates in general to selective radio call receivers such as pagers, and more specifically to a pager wherein a second alert mode is prompted due to lack of response by the user to a first alert mode.
  • Selective call radio receivers such as pagers are used in many applications to alert a user of a message. Such devices generally incorporate a radio receiver capable of producing an audible alerting signal which may be heard by the user. Another type provides the additional feature of a voice message following the audible alert. Yet another type provides a selectable audible alert or a silent (vibrating) alert. These devices are known as tone only, tone /voice, and tone /silent alert pagers. The tone only and tone /silent alert pagers may additionally have a visual display for the message.
  • the user is alerted of the incoming message according to the mode the user has selected for the pager. If the user has selected the silent (vibrating) mode for the pager, the user must be wearing the pager to receive proper tactile feedback during the vibrate alert of a new incoming message. If the user is not alerted of the incoming message, receipt of the message will be delayed until a later time when the user interrogates the pager. Or the message may be lost by another later message being "written" over the previous message in which the user was not alerted. If the user has selected the tone mode for the pager, the user must be able to hear the audible signal during the alert of the incoming signal.
  • a call light is often used in lieu of an alerting signal, or alternatively, in conjunction with the alert tone but remains on, or in a periodically flashing state, until the user discontinues it. Utilization of this feature requires that the paging device be in plain view of the user and that it be consciously checked by the user. This may not be a convenient operation with the paging device inside an article of clothing or on the waist. Furthermore, the high current drain of the alert light, which often flashes once a second, is not consistent with goals for maximizing the battery life.

  • Another object of the present invention is to provide a selective call radio receiver wherein a second alert mode is provided due to lack of response by the user to a first alert mode.
  • a method of alerting a user of a selective call radio receiver of incoming signals to the selective call radio receiver comprising the steps of identifying a specifically coded signal, alerting the user of the reception of the specifically coded signal by a first alert mode when the first alert mode is selected tar by a second alert mode when the second alert mode is selected, and alerting the user of the reception of the specifically coded signal by the non-selected alert mode when the user has not acknowledged receipt of the alert provided by the selected alert mode within a predetermined period of time.
  • Another embodiment comprises these steps when a message is received that is a duplicate to one previously received that hasTr ⁇ t been acknowledged by the ⁇ se ⁇ otherwise, only a selected one of the alert modes provides an alert.

If the message is not a duplicate of one already in RAM 14, step 35, and if the audible alert mode is selected, step 45, then an audible alert is given, step 46. If the audible alert mode is not selected, then a silent alert is given.
  • the selection of the duplication mode, step 34, and the audible alert mode, steps 36 and 45 may be programmed with the "code plug" at the manufacturing facilities or by direct input to the selective call radio receiver by the user.
