- the detection means of the known device which are realized using two potentiometers, have the drawback that they require a relatively large amount of space, are susceptible to faults, and require a mechanical coupling between the operating element and the potentiometers, which coupling is inevitably subject to mechanical wear and, as a result, will in the long term have adverse effects on the accuracy of the detection.
- the object of the present invention is to eliminate the abovementioned drawbacks.
- the present invention provides a device according to the preamble of claim 1, which is characterized in that the detection means comprise magnets which are arranged fixedly on the operating element and create a first magnetic field, having lines of force which extend substantially in the direction of the first axis, and a second magnetic field, having lines of force which extend substantially at right angles to the lines of force of the first magnetic field, and in that the detection means furthermore comprise a first Hall sensor and a second Hall sensor, which are arranged fixedly on the stationary part of the device and are respectively disposed so as to detect the first and the second magnetic fields.
- the present invention therefore provides for the use of the Hall effect, which is known per se, for determining the position of the operating element of the device.
- the use of the Hall effect makes it possible for there to be a gap between the Hall sensors, on the one hand, and the magnets, on the other hand, so that there can be no mechanical wear of the detection means during the service life of the device, and the accuracy of the detection means remains guaranteed throughout the service life.
- the detection means provided according to the invention appear to be eminently suitable for operating in the adverse conditions which prevail in the region of a gearbox of a motor vehicle.
- the invention provides for arranging the magnets and the Hall sensors on a part of the device which is situated in the interior of the gearbox.
- the magnets are disposed in a common magnet support which can be mounted on the operating element, and the Hall sensors are disposed in a common Hall-sensor support which can be mounted on the stationary part of the device. This design is extremely compact.

- the shaft 12 is displaceable in the direction of its longitudinal axis, which displacement corresponds to a displacement along neutral line N of the H pattern of the gearbox, and can assume three positions in that direction. In each of these three positions, the shaft 12 is rotatable over a certain angle in two opposite directions about its longitudinal axis, which rotation of the shaft 12 corresponds to the engagement of a desired gear of the gearbox.
- the device 10 comprises hydraulic actuator means.
- the hydraulic actuator means comprise a first double-acting piston-cylinder assembly 15, which is aligned with the shaft 12, and a second double- acting piston-cylinder assembly 16, in a direction perpendicular to the shaft 12.
- hydraulic valve means (not shown) , which are preferably electromagnetically actuated, are present, as well as a diagrammatically indicated electronic control device 18 for effecting the desired displacement of the shaft 12 in the direction of its longitudinal axis and the desired pivoting of the shaft 12 about its longitudinal axis.
- the device furthermore comprises detection means 20 for detecting the actual position of the shaft 12 with respect to the stationary part 11 of the device 10 and for providing corresponding feedback signals for the control device 18.
- the detection means comprise an annular magnet support 21, which is arranged fixedly on the shaft 12, and a bush-like Hall- sensor support 22, which is arranged fixedly on the stationary part 11 of the device 10.
- the magnet support 21 bears a first permanent magnet 23 and a second permanent magnet 24, which respectively create a first magnetic field, having lines of force which extend substantially in the direction of the longitudinal axis of the shaft 12, and a second magnetic field, having lines of force which extend substantially at right angles to the lines of force of the first magnetic field.
- the Hall-sensor support 22 bears a first Hall sensor 25 and a second Hall sensor 26, which are respectively disposed so as to detect the first and the second magnetic fields created by the two magnets 23 and 24.
- the detection means 20 also comprise an electronic circuit 27 for the Hall sensors 25 and 26, which circuit supplies a first output signal which is representative of the position of the shaft 12 viewed in its longitudinal direction and a second output signal which is representative of the position of the shaft 12 in the direction of the pivoting about its longitudinal axis.
- the above-described detection means 20 are compact, accurate and easy to mount. A further important advantage is that they are resistant to the adverse conditions which prevail in the region of, or even in, a gearbox.
- a preferred embodiment provides for the magnet support 21 and the Hall-sensor support 22 to be arranged on part of the shaft 12 which comes to lie in the interior of the gearbox; this location is indicated in Figure 1 by 30.
- the detection means 20 described are then preferably accommodated in a space which is closed by seals, so that no gearbox oil passes into the gap between the magnet support 21 and the Hall-sensor support 22. This is important because gearbox oil contains metal particles which could interfere with the magnetic field of the detection means.
- the closed space may be filled with another liquid (oil) .
- Disposing the detection means in the gearbox means that the device 10 takes up less space outside the contours of the gearbox, which is particularly important when using a device of this kind in passenger vehicles.
