Definitions

  • the invention relates to a display device for displaying colored images with an LCD screen, which has a plurality of segments that are switchable in terms of transmission, and are assigned to individual pixels, with a light box arranged behind the LCD screen, designed to illuminate the LCD screen by means of several light sources, and with a control unit for controlling the segments and the light sources.
  • Such display devices are used for display in many devices and are therefore known.
  • the segments of the LCD screen represent individual pixels from which the images are composed.
  • the color representation of the images is often achieved in that a color filter is arranged behind the LCD screen.
  • the display device is thus suitable, for example, for displaying images such as warnings, city maps or status information in a motor vehicle.
  • a disadvantage of the known display device is that the color filter absorbs a high proportion of the light emitted by the light sources. This leads to a high current requirement for the light sources and to high temperatures in the light box.
  • the invention is based on the problem of designing a display device of the type mentioned at the outset in such a way that it can be produced as cost-effectively as possible and avoids high temperatures in the light box.
  • the display device With this design, a large number of images can be displayed by the display device in different colors without the use of a color filter in the light box. Due to the simultaneous and sequential activation of the light sources each having one of the colors and the segments of the LCD screen assigned to the respective color, the colored image is successively composed of a red, a blue and a yellow image. Due to the sluggishness of the human eye, the image appears colored to a viewer of the display device. The fact that no color filter is required to color-illuminate the LCD screen means that a particularly large proportion of the light generated by the light sources reaches the viewer. With the same intended brightness of the display device, fewer or weaker light sources can be used compared to the prior art. The The pointing device therefore heats up less. By eliminating the color filter, the display device can be produced particularly cost-effectively.
  • the display device is suitable for displaying still or moving images, such as for warnings, if the frequency of the activation of the light sources and the segments can be changed by the activation unit.
  • the highest possible frequency is required to display a still or moving image flicker-free for the human eye.
  • the frequency can be reduced and a flickering image that attracts the attention of a viewer can be generated.
  • the display device according to the invention is particularly suitable for use in a motor vehicle or in a monitoring system.
  • the LEDs are available for the three primary colors, so that the LCD screen can be illuminated with any color. Furthermore, the LEDs have the advantage of having a particularly low inertia when switching.
  • the display device requires particularly few light sources if the light-emitting diodes are designed as multi-chip light-emitting diodes. With this design, a particularly small number of light sources are required, since each of the light-emitting diodes is designed to produce any color. According to another advantageous development of the invention, display devices with a particularly high brightness can be produced inexpensively if the light sources are designed as neon tubes.
  • the invention permits numerous embodiments. To further clarify its basic principle, one of these is shown in the drawing and is described below. In a single figure, this shows a display device according to the invention in a longitudinal section.

  • the light box 1 and the LCD screen 2 are electrically connected to a control unit 3.
  • the LCD screen 2 has a multiplicity of segments 4, the transmittance of which can be switched individually by the control unit 3.
  • a plurality of light-emitting diodes 5-7 which have the three primary colors, are arranged in the light box 1. Light emitted by the light emitting diodes 5 - 7 spreads evenly in the light box 1 and penetrates segments 4 of the LCD screen 2 switched to high transmission.
  • the light emitting diodes 5 - 7 are interconnected for each of the basic colors and are thus controlled together by the control unit 3 .
  • An image is displayed from pixels by correspondingly switching the segments 4 on the LCD screen 2.
  • the light emitting diodes 5 - 7 having the intended color are controlled by the control unit 3.
  • the segments 4 and the light emitting diodes 5-7 By briefly switching the segments 4 and the light emitting diodes 5-7, a large number of images can be displayed in a short period of time.
  • multicolored images are created for the human eye.
