Abstract

A fluorination process which comprises fluorinating an organic compound with an electrophilic fluorinating agent bearing an N-F bond in liquid carbon dioxide, supercritical carbon dioxide, liquid fluoroalkane, or supercritical fluoroalkane; and use of quaternary-nitrogen onium salts represented by the general formula (I), specifically by the general formula (II) in the above fluorination process as the electrophilic fluorinating agent: (I) (II) (wherein X- is a conjugate base of a Brensted acid). The above process makes it possible to conduct fluorination in a liquid medium such as liquid carbon dioxide easily and safely in high yield.
