Could you try latest CVS ?
I disabled VBI data capture for anything but NTSC Tuner.

Unfortunately I'm not able to use experimental-5 binaries. This because I'm
using a gentoo distro with gcc 3.2.3. Where can I find the source of
experimental-5?

Thank you :)
Comments:
* I would much prefer if mp3lame (as well as vorbis) option was
autodetected. Otherwise, there would bug reports when people
Try to use mismatched options.
Perhaps, all one needs to test for is the presence of mp3lame
and vorbis libraries - there is no harm in specifying unused
library flags.
* I have committed a slightly modified version of your patch to get
AVview working with CVS ffmpeg - this should allow ffmpeg 0.4.6
to work too.
Please test - I am not sure whether motion_estimation_method variable
has vanished in CVS ffmpeg.
best regards

There is a problem with mtrr settings when using XFree86 4.3.0. Hopefully
this will get fixed in next release.

Attached is a diff for avview to allow it to compile with ffmpeg from CVS. adds a new option to configure, --enable-mp3lame, and checks if the library is actually present/ usable if enabled. would probably be better to simply test libavcodec to see if it was compiled with mp3lame support... but... also modifies ffmpeg.c to compensate for changes in ffmpeg CVS. Hi.. I have installed ati.2/km/avview on a Athlon 1800 with Radeon 7500 AIW. The system has RedHat 9.0 installed, with kernel 2.4.20-18.9 (Redhat kernel). Alsa drivers is installed and working fine. When I start up avview, I get a picture, but no movement, the first picture just hangs there... Scanning channels works fine. The still picture looks good, color seems fine etc, and I can hear the sound. Same thing happens in xawtv avview: 0.12.0 km from CVS ati.2: ATI-4.3.0-9.i386.tar.gz Redhat 9.0 with all updates applied When switching to a channel where there is no program, I can see the "dots" moving. Actually it seems everything is working just fine, except that the picture "hangs". The program is still working, I can switch channels etc. The same system (with a different soundcard) did work earlier, with RedHat 8. I could see the pictrue then, but had no sound. I'd be thankful for any suggestions.. :) -- Roald Amundsen |

Check /var/log/XFree86.0.log - it is likely XFree86 cannot find all

I am not certain, but I have doubts this would work.

libavcodec.so ? Avview actually uses static libavcodec.a, or at least I
thought so.

If libavcodec compiled properly, there is no need for this insane checks.
In this situation, something wrong with ffmpeg installation (are
libavcodec.so exist in source tree? what say ldd?)

Actually, avview configure script does not check whether any other
libraries are needed to link in ffmpeg. An oversight, of sorts
(ffmpeg-config would be a nice alternative).
A patch to configure.in to recognize this would be welcome :)

The first thing to look at is /var/log/XFree86.0.log and the source code.
If something failed would have indications of what it was - or, if there
is nothing, it might be that the code you are trying to run is not active.
Also, keep in mind that your TV should be connected to your computer
during boot for devel branch to work.
Lastly, the code may simply not work with some (especially older) cards.
best regards

No idea. Did you try compiling ffmpeg without lame support ?
Also try adding lame library to the list of libraries that avview_shell is
linked against.
